LANTERN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,704, dated October 31, 1882.
Application filed September 4, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, EDWIN LUFKIN, of Monroe, in the county of IValdo and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvements in Lantern-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, IO reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which is shown a perspective of my invention.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of lantern-holders made from wire or like material, provided with proper clasps for holding the lantern, and having a frame of said wire extending from top to bottom upon each side of the center of the lantern at its rear, to which a reflector is attached, the upper end of said frame adapted to support an arm or yoke for securing said frame and at tached lantern in the situation desired, and the lower end provided with appliances by which said lantern is held. Patents No.23eh045, No-
vember 2, 18 80, and No. 260,303, June 27, 1882, both issued to me and to E. H. Nealley, (assignor of 0ne-half,)show and describe holders of this class 5 but I do not limit the application of my present improvement to the holders 0 shown in said patents in any respect, simply referring to them as a convenient means of identifying the general type of holder to which my improvement is applicable.
It is frequently convenient to use a holder having no reflector attached, enabling the light to extend in all directions; and my present improvement consists of a lantern-holder having a frame of wire, the lower parts of which are united or brought together inde- 4o pendently of the reflector, thereby insuring the requisite stability without interfering with the free distribution of the light.
Referring to the drawing which illustrates my invention, the figure shows an elevation of a holder of the class referred to, c 0 being the frame-wires, having wires 9 g terminating in hooks h h to secure the lantern, extending from (No model.)
their upper ends. These hooks are supported by braces j j, attached to the frame-wires c 0. At or near the lower extremities of these wires I secure a connection or cross-bar, A, by any known method, said connection beingof the proper length to hold the frame-wires at the desired distance apart. A convenient means of applying this connection is to loop the ends of the cross-bar A through the spring-coils d, if such coils are used; but the gist of my invention being to unite the lower ends of the framewires 0 0 independently of the reflector, in such a manner as to confer stiffness on the frame without interfering with the distribution of the light, I do not limit myself to the form of the cross-bar, which may be entirely distinct from the other parts of the frame, or from a part of said frame extended or otherwise manipulated to enable it to perform the duties required by my improvement.
I do not claim the devices shown in Peter Grays patent on a lantern for bicycles, dated January 17, 1882, nor is any of the language used in this specification designed to agply to his invention. My invention relates to an entirely different class of articlesviz., lanternholders constructed of Wire or like material,
readily attached to or detached from the lantern, but not forming any part thereof or of its case, or having any permanent connection therewith.
What I claim is- In a lantern-holder of that class made from wire or like material, provided with proper clasps for holding the lantern, and having a frame of said wire 0 0 extending from top to bottom on each side of the center of said lantern, the connection or cross-bar A uniting the lower ends of said frame, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of August, 1882.
EDWIN LUFKIN.
