This invention relates to couches and has particular reference to a back rest or pillow support therefor which is swingahle to an out-of-the-way position so as to permit the couch being used as a bed.

An object of the invention is to provide a couch with a back rest or pillow support which extends longitudinally of one side thereof to provide a support for the back when the couch is used as a seat and which is swingable to a position at one side of the couch when the same is to be used as a bed.

Couches of the studio type are made of sufiicient width to provide a comfortable bed but such couches do not provide a comfortable seat for the reason that the same are too wide and usually require pillows and the like being supported f against a wall of the room in order to take up the excess width of the couch and provide a support for the back. The present construction pro vides a back rest which is upholstered or which may have pillows positioned thereagainst to reduce the width of the couch so that a person may be seated thereon with the upholstered back rest or pillows providing a back support and with the feet of the person resting upon the floor.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a back rest of said character which is mounted for rocking movement so that a person seated on the couch may adjust the back rest to the desired angularity by engagement of his back thereagainst.

With the foregoing and other objects in View. reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, and more particularly to the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive of the drawings, the back rest or pillow support includes a panel Ill extending longitudinally of a couch II and which is affixed thereto so as to provide a support for the back of an individual when seated on the couch, or asupport against which pillows I2 may be disposed in angular relaa tion thereagainst.

The panel i0. is mounted on vertical posts I 3 located adjacent the ends of the couch which posts are secured thereto by rivets l 4 or equivalent fastening means with-the upper ends of the posts projecting above the couch and connected with the panel I by pairs of flat link members l5 and I6. Each pair of link members l5 and IE is pivotally connected with one of the posts E3 on pivot pins I! and I8 which engage through openings in the flattened upper ends l9 thereof with the rear ends of the link members I5 disposed. on one side of the flattened upper ends l9 of the posts respectively and with the rear ends of the link members l6 disposed on the other side thereof.

The link members I5 and I6 of each pair are pivoted at their forward ends to the leg 25 of an angle bracket 2| on pivot pins 122 and 23 respectively with the forward ends of the link members 15 being disposed on one side of said legs'respectively and with the forward ends of the links it being disposed on the other side of the said. legs. Th legs 28 are disposed in alignment with the flattened upper ends I9 of the posts l3. The angle brackets 2| each include a leg 24 disposed at right angles with the leg 2i) thereof and to which the panel I0 is secured by screws or equiv" alent fastening means extending through openings in the legs 24. The legs 26 are provided with lugs 25 which are adapted to be engaged by the link members It to limit the swinging movement of the links and to dispose the panel It in the angular relation shown in Figs; 2 and 4 of the drawings. The posts l3 are also provided with outwardly projecting lugs 26 which are disposed in the path of movement of the link members it respectively and which form stops for limiting 3 the upward swinging movement of the link members to dispose the back rest in the out-of-theway position shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The pivot pins H and 22 in the pairs of link members are formed with enlarged heads and the link members [6 and I5 are respectively provided with recesses 28' and 29 into which the heads are adapted to snap when the angle brackets 2| and panel ID are moved to the out-of-the-way position above the posts |3 as shown in Fig. '7 of the drawings. The link members l5 and it of each pair are disposed in crossedformationwhenthe panel i is arranged in operative position to constitute a support for the back of an individual I disposed in seated position on the couch, and when the couch is to be used as a bed, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, .the backrest is swung to a position above the posts I3 with the link members arranged in substantially parallel relation and the panel reversed and disposed with theforward face locatedrearwardly.

In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs; 8 to 1.0 inclusive of the drawings,.the back rest includes a panel 35 extending longitudinally of a couch 36 and which is affixed thereto so as to provide a. back rest for an individual seated on the couch. In this form of the invention the panel 35 isv afiixed toan upholstered back 3'! having stuffed or resilient forward cushion 39. The panel 35. is afiixed to the back 3! below the transverse center thereof so as to permit of rocking of the upholstered back to difierent angular positionsas shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings by pressure of the occupant. thereagainst.

The panel 35 is mounted on vertical posts 4| located adjacent the ends of the couch which posts are secured thereto by rivets 42 or equivalent fastening means with the upper ends of the posts projecting above the couch and connected with the panel35 by pairs of flat link members 43 and 44 similar to the link. members l and IS in the previous form of 'the invention. The link members 43 and 44 of each pair are pivotally connected with. a flattened upper end 45 of one of the posts on pivot pins 46 and 41 with the forward ends of the link members of each pair being pivoted to a leg 49 of an. angle bracket 50 on pivot pins 5| and 52 respectively.

The link members 43 and 44 of each pair are disposed in crossed formation, similar to the previous form of the invention, when the panel 35 is arranged in operative position to constitute a support for the back'of an individual disposed in seated position on the couch and when. the couch is to be used as a bed, as illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawings, the back rest is swung to a position rearwardly of the posts 4| to dispose the link members in substantially parallel upwardly extending relation and the panel reversed and arranged with the forward face thereof located rearwardly. For this purpose the link members 43 and 44 of each pair are pivoted to the posts 4| to dispose the pivoted ends of the link members 43 on one side of the flattened upper ends 45 of said posts respectively and with the pivoted ends of the link members 44 disposed on the other side thereof. The forward ends of the link members 43 are disposed on one side of the legs 49 of the angle brackets 50 while the forward ends of the link members 44 are pivotally connected with said legs on the opposite sides thereof.

Each. of the angle brackets 50 also include a leg 53 which is disposed at right angles to the leg 49 thereof and to which the panel 35 is securedby screws or equivalent fastening means.

The said legs 49 are provided with lugs 54 which are adapted to be engaged by the link members 44 to limit the swinging movement of the link members and to dispose the panel 35 in the angular relation shown in Figs. 8 and 10 of the drawings. The posts 4| are also provided with outwardly projecting lugs 55 which are disposed in the path of movement of the link members 44 respectively and which form stops for limiting the upward swinging movement of the link members to dispose the back rest in the out-of-the- Way position shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings. The pivot pins 46 and 52 are formed with enlarged heads and the link members 43 and 44 are respectively provided with recesses 53 and 51 into which the heads are adapted to snap when the angle brackets 50 are moved to the out-of-the-way position shownin Fig. 9 of the drawings to thereby lock the link members 43 and 44 in upwardly projecting relation.

The couches illustrated in the drawings may be of any preferred type such as studio couches which are adapted to be used to form a. comfortable seat and to be made up into a bed. While two forms of the invention have been set forth herein, it is to be understood that the same is intended to cover all changes and modifications of the forms herein illustrated for the purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. In a couch of the type adapted to be made into a bed, a. couch body, a back rest extending longitudinally thereof, uprights affixed to the couch in spaced apart relation at the rear thereof and projecting above the couch, angle brackets aflixed to said back rest, pairs of crossed link members pivotally connected to said uprights respectively and pivotally connected to said brackets for swinging movement of said back rest from a position arranged in superposed relation over the couch with the link members disposed in crossed relation to an out-of-the-way position with the back: rest disposed in inverted relation and facing rearwardly and with the link members of each pair, disposed in parallel alignment, said angle brackets and said uprights having lugs against which certain of said link members engage for limiting the forward and rearward movements of said back rest, the upper pivotal connections of the link members with the brackets and uprights having enlarged outer ends, and said link members having recessed portions located substantially medially thereof adapted to engage over said enlarged ends of the pivotal connections for latching the link members of each pair in alignment when the back rest is swung to said o-ut-of-the-way position.

2. In a couch of the type adapted to be made into a bed, a couch'body having upwardly directed means at the rear thereof, a back rest extending longitudinally of said couch body, brackets affixed to said back rest, pairs of crossed link members adjacent the opposite ends of the couch body pivotally connected to said upright means and pivotally connected to said brackets for swinging movement of said back rest from a position arranged in superposed relation with reference to the couch with the link members disposed in crossed relation to an out-of-the-way position with the back rest disposed in inverted relation and with the link members of each pair disposed in parallel alignment, means carried by said brackets and said upright means against which certain of said link members engage for limiting the forward and rearward movements of said back rest, and said link members having recessed portions adapted to engage over enlarged projections on said brackets and upright means for latching the link members of each pair in alignment when the back rest is swung to said out-of-the-way position. 7
