COMBINED SCISSORS SUPPORT AND MARKING DEVICE I E. DAL'EY Filed May 13, 1947 INVENTOR. EVELYN DALEY ATTORNIK Patented Aug. 12, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED SCISSORS SUPPORT AND MARKING DEVICE Evelyn Daley, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application May 13, 1947, Serial N0."747,7 46
My invention relates to skirt guages and more particularly to a guage for measuring the length of a skirt and marking the hem thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for measuring the distance of the lower edge of a skirt from the floor and supporting a scissors for cutting th skirt to a predetermined length, thereby maintaining an even height all around.
Another object of my invention is to provide such a device that is equipped with a marking means to indicate a hem near the bottom of the skirt being trimmed.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that may be easily moved along the floor, thereby permitting the model to maintain a constant position while the skirt is being trimmed.
Still'another object of my invention is to provide a device that may be adjusted to accommodate any thickness of garment.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device that may be adjusted to any height, may be easily manufactured, one that may be manipulated without previous experience or skill on the part of the operator, yet will function perfectly for the purpose intended.
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds and when taken in conjunction with the drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the assembled device.
Figure 2 is a cross-section taken vertically at line 2-2 in Figure 1. V
Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional View taken at the line 33 in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view taken at the line 4-4 in Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken at line 55 in Figure 2.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to the same, th characters I 0 and It! show a pair of vertical guides. These guides are spaced apart in parallel relation to one another, and are tapered at their vertical edges II. This tapering is arranged in a manner whereby the wider portion of the vertical guides Ill and III are to the outside.
The vertical guides I0 and I0 are radially bent at their upper edge I2, and these radial bends extend outward away from one another. There is a base I3 shown provided with sliding contacts I4 at its bottom. One of the vertical guides I0 2 Claims. (Cl. 7-141) is also provided with a longitudinal slot shown as l5 which is centrally disposed and extends for a portion of the length of the guide.
There is a marking member I6 shown slidably engaging one of'said vertical guides. This marking member IB'is provided with a marking crayon shown as H, which crayon engages the slot I5 in the vertical guide I0.
Toward the lower end of the vertical guide It is shown a spreading means consisting of a thumb screw I8 which threadedly engagesthe vertical guide Ill. The thumb screw [8 has its forward end I9 arranged for contact inside of the vertical guide I0 and as the thumb screw [8 engages the threaded portion of the guide I 0, it will have a tendency to spread the vertical guides Ill and I0, thereby permitting the skirt material that is being trimmed and marked to pass between the vertical members In and I0 while the device is being moved on the surface of the floor during the trimming operation.
Midway between the markin member I6 and the spreading member I8 are shown a pair of scissor guides 20 and 20, also contacting the outer beveled surfaces II of the vertical guides I0 and I0 and retained in frictional engagement with the guides I0 and I0 by means of the thumb screws 2 I.
The scissor guides 20 and 20 are equipped with radially formed receiving ends 22 and 22 disposed outward to receive the garment, and there are rest members 23 having a fiat surface at the top onto which the scissors, not shown, may be placed during their manipulation. These rest members 23 are also shown extending outward in opposite direction at their extreme ends 24 and 24'.
The vertical guides I0 and III are shown provided with graduations 25 at their outer face which may act as a guide when determining the height that the scissor rests 20 and 20' are set, or the hem marking crayon I! is set, for the skirt being trimmed and marked.
In operation, the device is placed on the floor in a vertical position, and the model maintains a constant position while the skirt, which is disposed between the vertical guides and the scissors, rests on the flat surface of the rest during manipulation. The marking crayon is placed at a desired height to mark the material where it is to be folded for the hem.
Obviously, some skirt material is heavier than others, and the vertical members II] and I0 may be spread apart to a desired distance to accommodate the skirt, as the device is moved along 3 the floor around the periphery of the skirt being trimmed.
In the chosen embodiments of my invention, there are many features not heretofore disclosed in the prior art, and while I have shown a simple, 5 single arrangement of the component parts, I am cognizant of the fact that many changes in the form and configuration of the various parts may be made without efiecting' their operativeness and efli'ciency. and I reserve -the right to make such changes as I may deem convenient without departing from the spirit of my inven, tion or the scope of the appended claims- Having thus described my invention, what I; claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
1. A skirt guage comprising in combination-zap base, a pair of graduated vertical members supported by said base, said vertical members spaced i apart from one another in.paralle1 relation to one another, a pairof horizontal scissor, rests extendingoutward on both endsfromsaid vertical member and adjustably mounted'thereon; said scissor rests having flat surfaces at their top. one of said verticalpmembers having ,a longitudinal slot centrally' disposed therein, .a marking member,- a crayon supported by said'marking member; said crayon extending through the ivertica'l slot in said 'vertical member, and means for adjustably vsupporting z-said :marking rmemb'era: on one 'iOf: :said verticallnembers's.
2. A skirt guage comprising a base, a pair of graduated vertical stationary standards supported by said base, said standards spaced apart in parallel relation to one another and having their upper ends extending curved outward from one another, a pair of scissor supports adjustably supported by each of said standards, said supports provided with flat surfaces at their upper side, an adjustably mounted marking member supported by one of said standards, a crayon extending from said marking member toward the opposite standard, and spreading means attached near the bottom of said standards to adjust the space between said standards when the device is in use.
