DISPLAY CARD FOR TAPED SCREWS Filed Nov. 15, 1949 5' e0 Mu Egg a &9 3.0 4 I Patented June 3, 1952 assignor to'Research Engineering & Manufaoturing, Ihc.,.NewBedford,, Mass., a corporation ofMassachusetts ApplicationnNovember 15, 1949, Serial No. 127,282
My present invention is a novelrand improved holder or display card for mounting, holdin marketing, and shipping. a, series, or sets, of predetermined numbers of taped screws, and. includes a novel method of attaching or mounting the same on a card.
The invention may be utilized in combination with an article, such as a hinge'or the like, to be secured by the screws mounted on the card. The sets of screws mounted on the card would includeappropriate sizes and numbers for attaching' the article, or articles, mounted" on the card and in cooperation therewith.
Heretofore it has'been customary to mount sets of screws, or thelike; by attaching the threaded portions to adhesive tape, or tapes, so that the threads would be protected, and a serie'sxor set of such taped screws could bereadily counted, handled, and dispensed. An appropriate number, such as four, six; Or a dozencould be readily served from a length of such taped-screws, and they would be retained'in taped and assembled position and thus prevent loss, damage, and time in counting and handling.
A1sQ;.,. 1Ioh prior taped screwshave'often been stapled, or'the like, to the hacker or display'card; but all such prior methods,.as"far as I am aware; have been unsatisfactory; expensive, and required repeated: handling; The attaching staples; or the like, often tore the tape andconsequentlythe screws were displaced or lost.
While my invention is primarily directed to handling taped screws, other" similar" devices. bolts, fastenings, or the like can be' so handled; either individually or in groups united by tape; wire, or similar means.
In my present improved method of mounting and applying a set of taped screws, or a plurality of sets or series, I utilize a method of attaching the same directly to the display backer or card itself, utilizing an integral part of the card for the attaching: and. holding. element.
My method also has thev important advantage of an attractive display for the taped articles whichoan be readily seen and mountedto'show the full number desired or required. This. is particularly important where the. taped screws are mounted on a card in association with the fastener, such as a hinge or other article, where a predetermined number of screws are necessary for use in the attachment of the hinge or other article displayed therewith.
In carrying out my present invention I provide a suitable backer, preferably a card of sufiiciently stiff material, such as cardboard. from which I 2 Claims. (Cl. 20679) can provide a series of slotted portions into which the top of the shanks of the taped screws may be readily fitted andheld, and easily removed. For this purpose, I may stamp out a series of flaps from any portion of the card, or I may form such .flaps around the edge, particularly at the top or sides, and simultaneously with such stamping or cutting I form the slots or openings into which the head and shanks of the screws above the taped portion can be easily fitted. If desired, such cut and stamped attaching. flaps can bearranged. for sets of screws of differentsizes and dimensions, as well as a difierent number, as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and explained- My improved method. of mounting a set, or sets, of. taped screws on a combinedholder and display card by utilizing an integral part of the card itself and independently of separate fastenings,..staples, or the like extra operations, and either with or without a hinge or other article to be held thereby, is a distinct novelty in this art'and I wish to claim both the method and the resultant article broadly.
Referring to. the drawings illustrating preferred embodiments:
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing, a display card with'a plurality of different sizes and quantities of taped screws attached thereto by my present method;
Fig. 2: is a cross-sectional view on the line 2-2 of. Fig. 1:;
Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating a set of taped screws attached to the display cardin association with a hinge for which the: set of screws may be used to secure the hinge;
Fig; 4- is: a plan view illustrative of the process of cutting the screw-holding elements as exemplified in Figs. 1': and 2, and
Fig. 5 illustrates a modification.
It will be appreciated.thatmy'present invention is suitable for use with any size, type; or-stylei of fastener, particularly screw fasteners, andlfo'r'use in receiving, holding, and displaying any quantity or number in a set-or series of such screws, which are united by a tape, or tapes, enclosing and protecting the threaded portions. The taping of such screws is effected very quickly and economically and in long lengths, and" from such taped lengths a predetermined number, such as four, six, twelve, or the like can be readily severed and retained in assembled position by the tape. The tape also protects the threads and facilitates the handling of the severed quantity without loss and insures speedy attachment to the card or as indicated at 6, leaving attached to the card the remaining uncut portion, as designated at 1. On the completely cut-thru edge 6 and opening therefrom are also completely cut-out recesses, each formed with a flared opening 8 and, preferably, with an inner circular cut-out portion In of approximately the diameter of the shank of the screws, which will be fitted therein.
The flared opening 8 permits ready insertion of the set of taped screws in the fiap 2 when the latter is turned upwardly, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, which receives the shank portion l2 of each screw, with the head It holding the same in position and with the depending threaded portion covered by the tape l5, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Thus when the flap 2 is turned outwardly or lifted from the body portion of the card I, as best illustrated in Fig. 2, the set of screws held in assembled position by the tape I5 can be readily slid or fitted thru the flared opening 8 for each screw and into the enclosing recess H], which latter is substantially equal to the shank l2 of the screw as above noted and of less diameter than the head I4. Thus, the entire set or series of screws so taped are fitted simultaneously into the recesses provided therethru and are detachably united to the card I in an attractive displayed position. The uncut longitudinal edge I of the flap or screw-holding element 2 may, if desired, be perforated, grooved, or weakened slightly to facilitate the out-turning of the flap, but this is optional and, in any event, retains the flap in permanent attachment to the card I while holding the set of taped screws in position, as shown.
A similar construction for different sizes and numbers of taped screws is illustrated by the flap 3; and a still further differing size and number of taped screws 2| is shown attached to the flap 4.
The opening in the cardboard behind each flap, as indicated at 22, 23, and 24 from which the flaps 2, 3, and 4 respectively have been cut and bent outwardly or lifted upwardly, does not interfere in any way with the holding action as the tape part of each set of screws rests against the body of the card I below each opening, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2, and such openings may also be utilized by the operator to facilitate the fitting of the respective screws in their appropriate notches.
As shown in Fig. 3, I have illustrated the combination of a screw-retaining flap 25 holding a set or series of taped screws,-indicated at 26, in the notches cut therethru in the flap 25 and held in assembled position by the tape 21 on a card 30, wherein is also attached a hinge 3| or other fitting for which the set of taped screws held in the flap 25 are provided to cooperate with the screw openings 33-33 in the hinge or fitting 31, so that the same constitutes a complete holder and display unit for attractive merchandising. Such a hinge member 3| can be secured in any desired way but, preferably, by fitting the opposite corners of the hinge 3| thru diagonal slots 35-35 in the holder 30, as shown in Fig. 3.
While I prefer to cut the holding elements such as 2, 3, 4, and 25 directly from the body of the card, I may if desired form such flaps on the top of each portion of the card, as indicated in Fig. 5 in fragmentary view at 40, or entirely around each edge portion of the card, if desired, folding the same inwardly for compactness and transportation.
It will thus be seen that by my novel method I secure sets or series of taped screws quickly and readily to the integral part of the holding element or card, and may similarly so secure a set of screws and attached fitting with which the screws in size and number are to be utilized for attachment of the fitting to any article desired.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a display card in combination with a plurality of headed fasteners, a predetermined number of said fasteners being united by two continuous tapes partially enclosing the shank portion of each fastener, said tapes being united between adjacent fasteners, said display card having an integral slotted flap formed therefrom, said flap being provided with a plurality of slots in spaced relation corresponding to the spaced position of the shanks of the fasteners in said tapes, each slot being of less area than that of the head of a fastener, whereby a series of taped fasteners may be simultaneously applied to the slots in the flap of the display card, while the shanks are held united by said tapes.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a display card in combination with a plurality of series of taped headed fasteners, each series being united by two continuous tapes partially enclosing the shank portion of each fastener, with the head projecting from the tapes, said display card being provided with a number of slotted flaps corresponding to the number of series of taped fasteners to be displayed thereon, each flap having a series of cut-out portions in corresponding spaced relation to the spacing of the fasteners in the tapes, each cut-out being of less area than that of a fastener head, each cut-out having a flared opening into the cut-out to facilitate the assembling of a plurality of taped fasteners to said flaps, while the shank portions are united by the tapes.
