While I have shown my invention as applied to a lock l2 of a basically standard type known as a burglar proof and jimmy proof double feature lock, it should be understood that I do not con sider my invention restricted to this type of lock but applicable to a wide variety of other locks for doors and other closures.
Inaccordance with the usual practice in looks ofthis general description, the lock l2 comprises a housing I6 for bolt elements (not shown) which are shot or actuated by means ofa: shaft or stem 18 and dog l9;'the latter; being manipulated by means of aknob 20- on theoutside of the casing l5. The knob 20, operating through the stem I8 and dog I8, serves to actuate the bolt mechanism for the lock in the usual manner. Normally, due to the action of compression spring 6| operating on the projection 59 of the dog 55, said dog 55 will be urged away from engagement with the stem [8, as in the relation shown in Fig. 1, and in this condition the bolt mechanism is free to be locked or unlocked at will.
When it is desired to lock the bolt mechanism in either locked or unlocked relation to the doorplate, key is inserted in the cylinder lock 25 and the latter is rotated, as a result of which finger. 31 will act on the face 46 of the cam 42, as seen in Fig. 1, turning the cam in a' counterclockwise direction. The cam face 45 will thus act on the face 63 of the dog 55, urging it toward the left, as shown in the drawings, into the condition shown in Fig. 2 wherejsaid dog will interlock with the stem 18, securing it against rotation.
When it is desired to release the bolt mechanism, one turns the cylinder lock in the opposite or clockwise direction, whereupon the finger 31 will engage the face 41 of the cam 42 as seen in Fig. l, rotating it back to the position of Fig. l.
It will be seen that, as the cam is rotated clockwise, the dog 55 will be moved by the spring 6| toward the right, back to the position shown in Fig. 1 where it is out of locked engagement with the stem l8.
It will be obvious that devices embodying my invention may be constructed in various other ways without departing from the spirit of my invention. Thus, if desired, the cylinder lock may be applied to the opposite side of the look from the knob 20. Furthermore, my invention may be applied to other types of locks.
Furthermore, if desired, the bolt actuating stem I8 may be incorporated within the circumference of cylinder lock 25 or its housing in the manner shown in my copending application above referred to, instead of being separate therefrom as shown herein. In such case, it would merely be necessary to shorten the dog 58 and the spring 6|.
It should be understood therefore that the disclosure is merely exemplary of certain preferred forms and applications of my invention to which I do not intend to be limited.
I claim:
1. In a bolt look, a casing, a shaft within said casing and rotatable from one position to another position 180 degrees displaced therefrom to project a bolt to extended position and reversely to retract the bolt, said shaft having a diametrically positioned hole therein exteriorly of the casing, a cylinder lock within a housing mounted on said casing, a cam rotatable by said cylinder lock when a key is inserted therein, parallel guide means extending from within the housing of the cylinder lock to adjacent said rotatable shaft, one of said parallel guide means having an inturned abutment at its end adjacent said rotatable shaft, a dog slidably mounted between said parallel guide means and having a projection at one end forming a follower for said cam, a spring positioned between said abutment on the guide means and said projection on the dog biasing the latter to inoperative position, said cam being effective to shift the dog against the action of said spring into the hole in said shaft in either of the positions of the latter.
2. In a bolt lock, a casing, a shaft within said casing and rotatable from one position to another position degrees displaced therefrom to project a bolt to extended position and reversely to retract the bolt, said shaft having a diametrically positioned hole therein exteriorly of the casing, a cylinder lock within a housing mounted on said casing, a cam rotatable by said cylinder look when aj key is inserted therein, parallel guide means extending from within the housing of the cylinder lock to adjacent said rotatable shaft, one of said parallel guide means having an inturned abutment at its end adjacent said rotatable shaft, a cover plate extending from the housing of the cylinder look over said parallel guide mean to adjacent said rotatable shaft, a dog slidably mounted between said parallel guide means and having a projection at one end forming a follower for said cam, a spring positioned between said abutment on the guide means and said projection on the dog biasing the latter to inoperative position, said cam being effective to shift the dog against the action of said spring into th hole in said shaft in either of the positions of the latter.
