LOOK CONSTRUCTION.

This invention relates ge1ierally handle for; automobile door. looks and latohes and refers more partioularly to looking devioes for rendering the outside handles of looks inoperative.
One of the essential objeots of the invention is to provide a handle assembly inwhioh the looking devioe and outside handle are preferably mounted inspaoed relation upon a common support suoh as an escutoheon plate and thelike. v
Another objeot-is to provide a construction of this type that may be readily assembled as a unit. and that may be easily and the line 3-3 of Figure 2 and quiokly installed in thedoor of the automoi1e V A further objeotis to provide a strong and durable structure that is simple in construction and oan be manufactured at a comparatively-low: oost.
With theseand other objeots in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction,oombinations and arrangements of parts as Wlll be more fully desoribed and partioularly pointed out in the appended olaims.

Referring now to the drawing, 1 is an esoutohon plate, 2 is a look handle, and 3 is a looking devioe of an assembly embodying my invention. As shown, the esoutoheon plate 1 is provided withspaoed apertures 4 for reoeiving suitable seouring elements such as sorews, nails and the like and is adapted to be mounted upon the outer side of a door. The handle 2 has a shank 5 j ournaled in the esoutoheon plate 1 and is provided at its outer end with a suitable grip 6 adapted to be grasped by the.operator upon the outside of the door for actuating look meohanism (not shown) and the looking devioe is proferably mounted upon the inner side of the esoutoheon plate and inoludes the tumbler look 7 that is adapted to be operated by a suitable key (not shown) from the outside of the door.

Heretofore tumbler looks have been mounted in the shanks of the outside look handles but this vvas objeotionable beoause more stock Was requiredfor the shanks to aocommodatethe looks. Moreover suitable sookets or reoesses had to be bored or otherwise formed in the enlarged shanks to reoeive the looks. lhis was also objeotionable beoause suoh' boring operations added ma terially to the cost of manufaoturing the handles. r
With the present invention the objectionable features just referred -to have been 0ver* Corne entirely by r'nounting the tumbler look 7 on the esoutoheon plate 1 in spaced relationto the handle s'hank 5 and providing the latter with a looking bar 8 that is' adapted to be aotuated by the tumbler look 7. As shOwn, the bar 8 is provided at one end with the longitudinally extending adjoining slots so that the slots 9 and 10 respeotively Will alternately reoeive the handle shank 5. T0 provide an eflioient construction, the inner slot .10 is oiroular and is-of sufiioient size t0 permit the shank 5 to turn freely therein, while the outer slot 9 is preferably square shape to correspond to the cross seotional area of the shank 5. Thus the shank Will fit snugly in the slot 9 and Wlll be efieotively prevented from turning by the side walls 14 and 15 respectively thereof.
For guiding the sliding movements of the bar 8, I have provided a pin 16 that projeots laterally inward ly from the esoutoheon plate 1 and engages a longitudinally extending Sleeved on this pin 16 is a tubular spaoer 18 and a suitable washer 19 whioh serve to maint-ain the bar 8 in substantially parallel relation to the esoutoheon plate 1. As shovvn, the spacer 18 is located between the bar 8 and escutoh eon plate 1, while the Washer 19 is located between the bar 8 and head 20 of the pin. Henoe the bar 8 Will be eleotively prevented fron1 wabbling on the guide pin 18 and Will always be held in operative engagement with the eocentrio pin 12. If desired, a ootter pin 21 may be used to prevent aooidental .rra ai*nnr o outward displacement of the handle shank 5. As shown, this cotter pin 21 extends transversely of the sl1ank 5 and engages a Washer 22 sleeved upon the shank against the inner face of the escutcheon plate.
In use, the circular slot 10 normally neceives the hanclle shank and, the latter is free t0 tn1n, but may be easily and quiclfly renclered inoperative by 1noving the bar 8 with a key in the tumbler look 7 so that the square slot 9 Will receive the shank. When it is dsiied t0 relense the shank, 1l1e key is turned in the opposite direction in the tumbler look so as to cause tl1e circuler slot 10 to receive the shank. V

lVhat I clairn as my invention le A In an assembly of the Glass described. (h-e combination with an escutcheon plate of a lock handle having a sl1ank joumaled in said plate, means for rendering said handle inoperative inclnding a member inovable transversely of said shank, a pin projecting from said escutcheon plate for guiding said member, and spaeed elements on said pin for snbstmfi-ally parallel to said escuteheon v plate having means for rendering said handle inope1ative, a look carried by said plate and having mcans for actuating said bar, and a conneetion between said bar, nd:plate incluclin;x means projecting from said plate between said handle and l0ck and liaving means for guiding the movements of said bar. r

A handle unit assembly comprising an escutcheon plate, a handle having a shank jonrnaled in said plate, a reciprocting bar substantially parallel to said escntcheo plate having means for rendering said hanclle inoperative, a look carried by said plate and l1aving means for actuating said bar, a pin pmjecting from said plate between said handle and look and adapted to extend through a sl0tin the said bar, a washer secured to the end portion of said pin on one' side of the bar and a tubular spacer mount ed on said pin between the plate and ll1e other side of said bar and cooperating with aid Washer to guide the movements of said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
