Oct. 9, 1951 R. J. ENRICO PLATE FOR OUTBOARD MOTORS Filed Oct. 19, 1948 HT A nm, 7 mma J a M W m 0% 0 R w 1 m P a.
- Patented Oct. 9, 1951 PLATE FOR OUTBOARD MOTORS Raymond J. Enrico, Chisholm, Minn., assignor of twenty-five per cent to Chester A. Tomassoni,
Bemidji, Minn.
Application October 19, 1948, Serial No. 55,374
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a safety device forlocking an outboard motor upon a transom of a boat and has for its primary object the provision of a simplified safety plate which can be readily suspended upon the screws of the conventional C-clamps employed for retaining the outboard motor upon the transom, and a hasp secured to the transom for retaining the safety plate in locked position upon the transom.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a novel safety lock for outboard motors which will obviate the necessity of taking the motor off and replacing it every time the boat is placed in use or disuse.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide locking means for outboard motor clamps which will prevent unauthorized removal of a motor from a boat to which it is attached.
These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the device of the instant invention in locked position upon a transom, some parts being shown in section;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary rear elevational view of the device shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of a modification of the device of the instant invention attached to a transom but disengaged from the outboard motor; and
Figure 5 is a rear elevational view of the device shown in Figure 4 disassociated with the C-clamp for suspending the outboard motor on the transom.
Specific reference will now be made to the drawings. In the several views, in the accompanying drawings and in the following specification, similar reference characters indicate corresponding elements throughout.
Indicated generally at H] is an outboard mo tor of any desired type, which is suspended upon the transom I2 of a boat by means of conventional O-clamps M which are provided at their rear ends with arcuate slots [6 for slidably retaining a headed nut l8 extending from the shank 2B of the outboard motor Ill. The c-clamp I4 is, of course, provided with the usual screws 22, the rear end of each of which carries a pressure plate 24 while the forward portion of each screw is provided with the conventional sliding handle 26. When the pressure plate 24 of the screws 22 is urged against the transom l2, obviously the outboard motor In is suspended upon the transom I2. 60 2,479,300
To lock the C-clamp I4 upon the transom l2 so that the unscrewing of the screws 22 from the transom I2 will not cause the outboard motor H! to separate from the transom l2, the following device is provided.
A safety plate 28 is provided having preferably downwardly and inwardly inclined edges 30. At the bottom of the safety plate 28, a transversely extending slot 32 is provided for receiving a staple or keeper 34 which is removably secured to the transom 12 by means of screws 36.
In the modification shown in Figure 2, the safety plate 28 is provided with spaced opposed L- shaped slots 38 through which extend the screws 22 of the O-clamps I4 as shown clearly in Figure 1. In the modification shown in Figure 5, the means for suspending the safety plate 28 upon the screws 22 consists merely of spaced apertures 40. To lock the safety plate 28 upon the transom [2, a conventional lock 40 is suspended in the staple 34.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same ,is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination with a pair of outboard motor mounting screws, a locking device comprising a plate, means for suspending said plate on said screws, a slot in said plate, a keeper extending through said slot and adapted to be secured to a boat transom, and a lock engaging said keeper, said means including spaced L-shaped slots adjacent one end of said plate for receiving said mounting screws.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said first-named slot is disposed adjacent the end of said plate opposite said one end and said keeper includes a staple having a bar adapted to be secured to a boat transom.
RAYMOND J. ENRICO.
