Description

Dec. 31, 1929. 'r. L. SMITH LQGKING. CLAIP FOR OUTBOARD IOTOIS v1mm Jan. 26, ms
' ATTORNEY,
Patented Dec. 31,1929
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THEODORE L. SMITH, 011 DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE CAILLE BROTHER COMPANY, OF DETROIT,,MIC HIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN LOCKING CLAMP non onrnoann Morons Application filed January 26, 15128. Serial No. 249,529.
The present invention relates to locking clamps particularly designed for the securing in place on boats of outboard motor units.
Among the objects of the invention is a clamping device capable of being more easily tightened by hand than those heretofore used.
Another object is a clamp of the kind indicated which when in place may be locked to prevent its removal without the proper key.
Other objects will readily skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and accompanying drawing in which: I
Figure 1 1s a phantom view in perspective of an outboard motor unit involving the in:
vention; and
Figure 2 is a View in elevation of the clamp.
In the conventional outboard motor unit, a motor 10 is mounted in a suitable frame 11 with its shaft extended through the housing 12 and 13 to gearing therein by means of which it operates a propeller 14:. I
The frame 11 is hinged as at 20 to a double C clamp member 21 adapted to embrace the upper edge of the stern board (not shown) of a boatand provided with screws 22 adapted to be tightened against the inside of said stern board to secure the unit in place.
In the conventional clamp,'these screws are provided with wings or polygonal heads, either requiring the use of a wrench to tighten them sufiiciently.
In the present form, the screw heads are drilled laterally and rods 23 passed there through and provided with eyes 24 on either end. These rods 23 are made preferably of hardened steel and are long enough to pro-- vide considerable leverage in tightening the screws. After the screws have been tightened, the adjaceht ends of the rods may be brought sufficiently close to permit passing the hasp 30 of .a padlock 31 through the eyes thereof and thereby prevent their being unscrewed.
Now having described the invention and the preferred form of embodiment thereof it is to be understood that the said invention is to-be limited not to the specific details herein occur to those set forth but only by the scope of the claims which follow. I
I claim 1. A clamp device comprising a 'C clamp having a pair of clamping screws, a turning lever in the head of each screw having an eye in its end, and a locking device adapted to pass through said eyes and lock said levers together.
2JA clamp device comprising a C clamp having a pair of clamping screws, a turning lever slidable in the head of each screw havmg an eye in each end, and a locking device adapted to pass through adjacent eyes and lock said levers together.
THEODORE L. SMITH.
