(01. 2 20-48) This invention relatesto new and useful im proveme'nts andstru'ctur'al refinements in garbage receptacles, specifically, garbage receptacles of the outdoor type, and the principal object of the in t'ention is to provide a device of the character herein described, which'is of a highly sanitary nature and wherein the garbage may be quickly and easily deposited as-Well as removed by the garbage collector.

The further object of the invention is to provide a garbage receptacle which is simple in construction, not unpleasant in appearance, and which will not easily become damaged.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a garbage receptaclewhich will readily lend itself to economical manufacture and which is otherwise well adapted for the purpose which it is intended.

With theabove more important objects in view and such other objects asrnay become apparent asthis specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially ofthe construction and arrangement of parts as shown vin the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view'of the invention.

Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof.

Figure 3 is a side elevational view'of the same, illustrating the receptacle in a substantially upright position.

Figure 4 is a further side elevational view, substantially the same as that shown in Figure 3 but, illustrating the receptacle in a tilted position.

Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective detail of a cover and hinge used in the invention.

Figure 6 is a top plan view of a modified embodiment of the invention, and

Figure 7 is a fragmentary side elevational detail of the receptacle shown in Figure 6.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, particularly to Figures 1-5, inclusively, the invention consists of a garbage receptacle designated generally by the reference character In, the same embodying in its construction what may be referred to as an upwardly extending frame II including a pair of spaced parallel angles I2 and a pair of further, relatively short angles I3.

The lower end portions of the angles I2, I3 may, if desired, be embedded in concrete footings I4 in the ground, and a pair of spaced parallel plates I5 are rigidly secured to and connect to- 2 gather the angles I2, is, as will be'clearly ap= parent. I

The plates I5 are disposed in a vertical plane and the upper edge portions thereof are formed with substantially semi-circular notches It, so that the plates constitute what may be referred to as cradles for a pair of trunnions I5 support ing a tiltable container I8. i

The ccnfiguration of this container is clearly apparent from the accompanying drawings, the same including downwardly convergent front and rear walls I9, 20 respectively, as well as a air of side walls 2|, the latter terminating at their endspeaked edges 22, 23.

The container I8 is swi'ngable or til'table from a substantially upright position shown in Figure 3 to an offset or tilted positionshown in Figure 4, and vice versa,'the tilting of the container be ing facilitated by a suitable handle 24 on the wall I9. Moreover, tilting of the container beyond its upright position (in the direction of the outer 25) is" prevented by a means of a pair L-shaped brackets 26 which are rigidly secured to the side walls 2|. and are engageable with the angles I2 of the'fra'me I I, as will be clearly apparent.

It should be understood that the container I8 is removable from the frame II, this being accomplished by simply swinging the container to its tilted position as shown in Figure 4 and lifting the same upwardly by means of a pair of handles 21 provided on the side walls 2|, so that the trunnions I! are disengaged from the cradles I5.

A closure unit is provided for the container I8, but rather than being attached directly to the container, the closure unit is mounted upon the upper ends of the frame angles I2. The closure unit is designated by the reference character 28 and embodies in its construction a pair of swinga'ble covers 29, 30, these covers being hingedly attached to a suitable rod 3| supported by the frame angles I2. The two covers are provided with convenient handles 32 for obvious reasons, and when the container I8 is in its upright position as shown in Figure 3, the cover 29 rests upon the edges 22 of the container while the cover 30 similarly rests upon the edges 23, whereby proper coverage of the container is effected.

When it is desired to deposit garbage into the receptacle, the cover 30 may simply be lifted as shown by the phantom lines 33, but when the contents of the container I8 are to be removed by a garbage collector, this is facilitated by simply swinging the entire container to the position shown in Figure 4 and subsequently lifting the container from the cradle 15, as has been already explained.

In order to prevent the covers 29, 30 from dropping downwardly to a vertical position after the container is removed from the cradle, the cover 30 may be provided with a pair of laterally projecting stop pins 34 which are engageable with the frame angles i2 and thereby support the cover 30 in substantially the position shown in Figure 3, notwithstanding the presence or absence of the container l8 in the cradle. While the cover 30 is being self supported, the cover 29 may be swung onto the cover 30 as shown in Figure 4, whereby both covers will be prevented from dropping downwardly to a vertical position, as will be readily understood.

Referring now to the accompanying Figures- 6 and 7, the same illustrate a modified embodiment of the receptacle, the modified receptacle being designated generally by the reference character 40 and including in its construction a frame 4| which, in virtually all respects, is similar to the aforementioned frame ll.

The frame 4| supports a tiltable and removable container 42, and a closure unit 43 is mounted on the frame, as will be presently explained.

The closure unit 43, in this instance, includes a stationary center plate 44 which is rigidly secured to the frame 4|, and a pair of covers 45 are hinged to the center plate 44 as indicated at 46.

Needless to say, rather than being provided with peaked edges (such as the edges 22, 23 in the embodiment ID) the container 42 is equipped with arcuate upper edges 41, so that the tilting or swinging of the container is facilitated without interference with the cover or closure unit 43.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

In a garbage receptacle, the combination of a pair of spaced upwardly extending supports, a cross member connecting the upper .ends of said supports together, a container tiltably and removably mounted between said supports and having an open upper end, means for supporting said container in a substantially vertical position wherein said cross member extends substantially centrally over its open upper end and separates the same into a pair of individually accessible openings, a pair of individually openable covers hinged to said cross member and adapted to extend to opposite sides of said supports so as to rest on the upper edge of said container and close the respective openings, and stop means for supporting one of said covers in the absence of said container under the same, the second cover being swingable to a position wherein it rests on the cover supported by said stop means.
