" firearms. (01. 5-129) This invention is a combined hammock support and table, the hammock support of WhiOh'lS of the character disclosed in my Patent" No. 2,469,950, issued May 10, 1949. That hammock support has been found in practice -to be of marked utility and high eificiency in the support of the opposite endsoLa hammock, in such manner as to permit the" hammock to swing freely. There are, however, certain persons who' like to recline in a hammock butdo not wish the hammock to swing while they are therein. Furthermore if one goes to sleep in a hammock and inadvertently shifts his position, he is apt to fall out due to tilting of the hammock. Moreover, some timid persons, particularly ladies, find it difficult to get into and out of a hammock which is swinging for usually there is no support on which the person may rest a hand to steady himself while getting into and out of the hammock.

The present invention provides means for steadying the hammock at such times as the user may so desire it and provides a hand rest which the person may grasp while getting into or out of the hammock. This hand rest also functions as a table for holding drinks or other articles in proximity to the hammock.

Features of the invention, other than those adverted to, will be apparent from the hereinafter detailed description and appended claims, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing.

The accompanying drawing illustrates one practical embodiment of the invention, but the construction therein shown is to be understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a combined hammock support and table embodying the invention.

Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a fragmental schematic plan view showing the various positions of which the table may partake according to the desire of the operator.

The drawing shows a hammock support, such as illustrated in my said prior patent. It com-.

prises a base composed of end sections l and 2 adjustably associated with the intermediate section 3. The end sections carry upwardly diverging brackets 4, the upper ends of which support the opposite ends of a conventional hammock H. Said end sections have transverse feet 5 and 6 for supporting the brackets 4 in upstanding position.

A hammock so supported is free to swing back and forth in a lateral direction but the present invention provides simple and-'emcientmeans' for immobilizing it against this 'movement; means may conveniently be in the form of straps I connected to the opposite ends of the transverse head bar h of the hammock in any suitable-manner and adapted to be looped aroundthe feet 5 at the headiend ofthe hammock, as' show'nin Fig. 1'. Each ofthese straps has a buckle 8 whereby it may be drawn tautfso as to secure" the hammock against swinging-movement When thus immobilized a: person may" more readily get into or out of the hammock or may safely slumber therein. This immobilizing of the hammock is particularly useful when small children are put to sleep in a hammock for it thoroughly safeguards them from falling out of the hammock by tilting of the latter if the child shifts its position during sleep.

To assist timid persons in entering or leaving a hammock, I provide a hand rest that may be grasped so that the person may steady himself in so doing. To this end, one of the feet at the head end of the hammock is provided with an upstanding cylindrical post 9 over which is adapted to be rotatably fitted a tubular standard l0, offset at H intermediate its ends and adapted to seat within a chambered cylindrical boss l2 on the under side of a table l3, as shown best in Fig. 2. This table is conveniently made of metal. It is preferably provided around three sides with an outstanding marginal border l4 and at its attached end it is curled upwardly and over, as shown at 15, to provide a convenient hand grip. This grip is shown with a depressed channel I6 to serve as a cigar or cigarette rest and it may also have therein a hole I! to support a pipe or other article.

By mounting the table as described, the table is adapted for rotation in a horizontal plane about the axis of the ofiset upper end of the standard, while the standard itself is rotatable around the axis of the post 9. Thus the table is adapted to almost innumerable positions, e. g., those indicated at I3, I311, I37), I30 and l3d in Fig. 3. It is conveniently movable from one position to the others by the occupant of the hammock. Most persons find that when the parts are in the position indicated at Be in Fig. 3, the hand grip I5 is most conveniently positioned that, when grasped by one hand of the user, the latter may conveniently steady himself while getting into or out of the hammock. This may be done without disturbing any articles resting on the table l3.

In practice, the immobilizing straps 1 may be used with or without the table and vice versa, but

I find that when they are used together, a greater sense of security is provided and hammocks, which are notoriously unsafe from the standpoint of injury, may be rendered thoroughly safe to the user. It will of course be understood that while I have shown straps looped about the feet I and the cross bar h, these straps may be otherwise attached to these parts as by snap hooks or other convenient expedients for more ready attachment and detachment. Moreover, the hand grip may be of any other convenient shape without departing from this invention.

A hammock support, such as disclosed in my prior patent, may be equipped with the present" invention' at small cost in order to render the hammock perfectly safe and more convenient to use. a

The foregoing detailed description sets forth the preferred embodiments of the invention but the invention is to be understood as fully commensurate with'the appended claims.

' Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

cured, immobilizing straps secured to the opposite sides ofvthe hammock and to the base for holding said hammock against transverse swinging movement, said straps being releasable to permit swinging movement of the hammock when desired, and a table mounted on an upstanding standard supported on the base. said upstanding standard being oifset and rotatable with respect to both the table and the base.

A hammock support provided with a base having at its opposite ends upstanding brackets to support the opposite ends of a hammock, an upstanding standard mounted pnthe base, and a table supported by said; standard; said standard being oflset and rotatably secured to both the table and the base to permit the table to partake of different positions at the hand of such operator.
