This invention relates to improvementsV in handles for luggage, such as travelling bags, suit cases, brief cases and the like. Onel object is to provide a light weight handle of greatstrength that does not bend or lose its shape easily, that will stand long usage while showing little wear and that will effectually resist pressure of -four hundred pounds or more. f
A further object is to provide handles for luggage that may be made up in the post handle or U. type or in any double shaped'o'r curved type, the latter adapted particularly for use on heavy type cases among which are those having supporting straps. n
Y A still further object is'to provide a handle for luggage that is attractive in appearance, durable in use, inexpensive to manufacture and that is designedtosnugly fit the hand. The instant application isa continuation in part of my copending application, Ser. N o,'12,449, filed J anuary 24, 1949, now Patent 2,519,604, dated August 27, 1950.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described, pointed out and dened in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this disclosure, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the preferably metallic, plastic or wooden body blank or shell of the device, before being folded, disposed upon its flexible cover.
Fig. 2 is a view of Fig. 1 with the cover partly folded thereupon.
Fig. 3 shows, in plan, the shell and cover with paper or leather fillers applied thereto.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view through Fig. 3 on the line 4-4.
Fig. 5 is a View in end elevation of the instant handle almost completely folded about its median line.
Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation of the handle completely folded, stitched, and ready to be trimmed or finished.
Fig. 6A is an enlarged fragmentary sectional detail view taken on lines BA-SA of Fig. 6.
Fig. '7 is an end view of the finished handle.
Fig. 8 is an inverted plan view of Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modified form of' shell or body blank.
Fig. 10 is a plan View of the shell and cover of Fig. 9 but with fillers applied.
Fig. 11 is a cross-sectional view through Fig. 10 on the line II--IL '4 claims. (Crucial-57) Fig; 12 is a 'viewof the modified forni of Fig", Il almost completely, folded. Y. f "f Fig. 13 is a side elevational view of the modinedbhandle Yfolded and with rings indicated in broken lines- Fig. 14 is an end elevational view of a pair of handles, rnbdied' forni.A y n v, ,i Fig, i5 is .an enlarged fragmentary sectional detail view taken substantially on line I5--I5 OfFg. 1,3- y
Referring now to Figs. 1 to inclusivethe referencenumeral i denotes a substantiallyringshaped blank or shell that isof channel formation in cross-section except for the directly opposite materially reduced short web portions 22 that are substantially` flat, the shell being progressvely widenedand deepenedor vchannelled fromA each shortv flat portion to, pointsI half l,way toward theopposite fiat portion. Wrappedabout the shell is a ring -like ilexible :coyer3of leather or like material of greater width than the shell, the cover being formed with opposed outer deep peripheral notches 4, 4 at points aligned with the shell reduced portions 2, 2, the tongues 5, 5 defined by the notches 4, 4 being disposed inwardly upon the shell reduced portions. The inner periphery of the cover is formed with a plurality of notches 6 completely thereabout defining peripheral fingers 'i which are disposed inwardly upon the shell, all fingers and tongues as well as the cover body glued or otherwise firmly adhered to the shell, except that portion of the cover that extends outwardly beyond the shell.
Received upon that portion of the cover extending beyond the shell and upon the outer edge of the shell and extending half way across the shell channel and disposed upon opposite sides of the notches 4, 4 and extending from one notch 4 to the other are the spaced apart substantially semi-circular insert fillers 8 of stiifening material such as cardboard or leather, the fillers 8 being adhered to the cover. The shell and cover with fillers attached are now folded together about the reduced shell portion, first into the position shown in Fig. 5, or to bring portions of the handle contiguous to the line of fold together, whereupon such contiguous handle portions are given two or three fairly sharp blows, using a small hammer, so as to bring them into most intimate contact with each other and to deaden their resiliency at such points.
The folded portions are now pressed together with moderate force throughout their extent and a line of stitching 9 passed through the edges of portion I0 and a fiat portion Il, said portions v connected by reduced portions l2. A cover 3 is now applied to the shell in the manner previously described, the shell folded at its reduced portionafter fillers 8 have been inserted and adhered to the cover, and the folded portions adhered together and connected by a line .of stitching 9.
posed between said sections in alignment with and adhered to each other and extending beyond said sections, a cover for said sections adhered thereto and extending therebeyond and upon said fillers and adhered thereto, tongues integral with said cover disposed about and adhered to the; innerfface of saidjsectionsj.A anda line of stitching securing said'iillers to eachother and to said cover beyond said sections.
.-3. In a handle for luggage, a body portion formed of a substantially ring-shaped blank folded upon itself to form opposed cooperating 2 sections separated by reduced opposed portions,
one of Asaid coperating sections being dat, sub- -stantially semi-circular fillers disposed between said sections in alignment with and adhered to each other and extending beyond said sections,
Two complete handles, each provided with ringsV l5, are now secured to the article I6 provided, and when the case, or article, is carried, the two handles are grasped in one hand, 'nat sides Il together, as shown in Fig. 14.
,What is claimed is:
1. In a handle for luggage, a body portion formed of a channellel substantially vring-shaped blankfolded upon itself to form opposed cooperating sections, substantially semi-circular fillersl disposed between said sections in alignment with each other and adhered to each other and extending beyond said sections, a cover for said sections adhered thereto and extending therebeyond and upon said llers and adhered thereto, and a line of stitching securing said fillers to each other and to said cover beyond said sections.
2. In-a handle-for luggage, va body portion formed of a channelled substantially ring-shaped blank-folded upon itself to form opposed cooperating sections separated-by reduced opposed portions, substantially semi-circular fillers disa. cover for said sections alhered thereto and extending therebeyond and upon said fillers and adhered thereto, tongues integral with said cover disposed about and adhered tothe innerl face of said sections,. and a line of stitching .securing said fillers to each other and. to said cover beyond said sections, the handles adapted forfuse only in pairs the. members of which are free -of each other and in operative position having their ilat sectionsin abuttal. y
4. In a handle for luggage. a. body portion formed of a channelled substantially ring-shaped blank folded upon itself toprovide oppositecooperating sections, a. substantially ,semicircular iiller element disposed between said sectionsand having an outer edge portion extending therebeyond, a cover for said sections adhered thereto and extending therebeyond and upon said iillerelement, and a line of stitching securing said iiller elementvto said cover beyond said sections. 1
