United States atent O 3,001,675 GARMENT HANGER Marcy F. Aynes and Tessie E. Aynes, both of 1265 Cresthaven Drive, Pasadena, Calif. Filed Feb. 3, 1960, Ser. No. 6,441} Claims. (Cl. 223-88) This invention relates to improvements in garment hangers for coats and pants especially.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a hanger for the above purposes on which garments, such as a coat and pants, will not slip and become wrinkled and on which pants will not slip off while being carried by the hanger, or stored on the hanger.
Another object is to provide a hanger according to the foregoing which is constructed of readily available very inexpensive material so that the hanger is well adapted for manufacture and sale for low priced trade.
Yet another object is to provide a hanger in accordance with the foregoing which may be constructed for the most part of cardboard, yet is strong and durable, while being light in weight.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view in perspective of the garment hanger of this invention in the preferred embodiment thereof;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged view in side elevation partly broken away and shown in section;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in vertical cross section taken on the line 3--3 of FIGURE 2; and
FIGURE 4 is a view of a blank from which the body of the hanger is formed.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, as shown therein, the garment hanger of this invention comprises a generally rectangular, elongated body 1 having the form of an open flat frame including a horizontal top portion 3, for hanging coats or the like thereon, a bottom, pants hanging, horizontal portion 5, and upright end portions 7 connecting the top and bottom portions 3, 5 in vertically spaced relation to form an opening 9 in the body 1 through which pants, or the like, may be inserted to hang, in the usual manner, on the lower portion 5. The top portion 3 has an obtuse angled top edge 11 which inclines downwardly from opposite sides of the transverse center of said top portion 3.
A pair of strips 13 of sponge rubber, or other friction gripping material, are set into the top edge 11 to extend upwardly thereof and outwardly slightly beyond the end portions 7 for preventing a coat, or the like, from slipping on said top portion 3. The pair of strips 13 are spaced apart endwise, as at 14, at the transverse center of the top portion 3 for a purpose presently seen and extend parallel with the top edge 11.
A strip 15 similar to the strips 13 is set into the straight top edge 17 of the lower portion 5 of the body 1 to prevent pants, or the like, hung on said portion 5 from slipping on said portion or off the same.
The body 1 is formed from a blank 19 of stiff sheet material such as cardboard, or the like, having duplicate halfsections 21 of the same shape as the body 1 on opposite sides of a longitudinal center fold line 23 and which are folded together on said line 23 and glued 3,001 ,675. Patented Sept. 26, 1961 together, as at 25, to form the body 1 of two thicknesses, or layers, 27, of the material adhesively secured together with a folded bottom edge 29 and having the strips 13, 15 interposed and compressed between said thicknesses or layers 25, as best shown in FIGURE 3.
A hanger hook '27 rises from the upper portion 3 of the body 1 in the transverse center of said portion 3 through the space 14 between the strips 13. The hanger hook 27, as shown, is formed preferably of a single piece of wire bent centrally upon itself, as at 29, so that the hook is formed of double strands of the wire with a shank 31 having spread apart lower ends 33 interposed between the thicknesses, or layers, 27 of the top portion 3 and fixed therein by glueing together said double thicknesses, or layers, of said top portion 3.
As shown in the drawing, the top, bottom and end portions 3, 5, 7 of the body 1 are of substantial width for strength and to provide ample advertising space on opposite sides of said body 1.
The construction, use and advantages of the invention will, it is believed, be understood from the preceding description, without further explanation.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A garment hanger comprising an elongated body having an upper edge for hanging garments thereon and a central hanger hook rising from said body, said body being formed of double thicknesses of adhesively secured together st-ifi sheet material, and a pair of strips of resilient compressible friction gripping material extending along said edge at opposite sides of the hanger hook and projecting above said edge to engage and prevent a garment from slipping on said edge, and being interposed under compression between said thicknesses of the material.
2. A garment hanger according to claim 1, said body being an elongated generally rectangular frame including upper and lower portions, respectively, and upright end portions connecting said upper and lower portions in spaced relation for hanging of garments on said lower portion, and a strip of resilient compressible friction gripping material extending along and projecting above said lower portion and fixed under compression between said thicknesses of the material for preventing garments from slipping on said lower portion.
3. A garment hanger according to claim 1, said double thicknesses of the sheet material being folded together.
4. A garment hanger according to claim 1, said body having a bottom at which said thicknesses of sheet material are folded together.
5. A garment hanger according to claim 1, said hanger hook having a portion secured between said thicknesses of sheet material.
