The present invention relates to a foldable infants toilet seat and its combination with a detachable hinged connection or fitting for securing the infant seat to a conventional toilet seat.

As is well known, the conventional toilet seat found in the home lavatory or bathroom is too large for infants under the age of three years or thereabouts. As a result, special toilet seats for infants have been provided which may be loosely held on the conventional seat for ready'removal therefrom or which have required special fittings or connections corresponding to the particular bathroom or lavatory toilet encountered by the user in order that the infant seat ma be attached to that specific conventional toilet seat.

The present invention therefore contemplates the provision of an infants toilet seat provided with a fitting or connection so that it may be attached to or secured on any seat encountered in the conventional bathroom or lavatory.

These, other and further objects and advantages of the present invention will be clear from the following description and the drawings appended thereto in which:

Fig. 1 is a plan view of an infants toilet seat and connection or fitting according to my invention and attached to a conventional toilet seat, the infants seat being in folded condition on the adult toilet seat;

Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of an infants toilet seat according to my invention in unfolded condition and illustrating on element of my fitting or connection;

Fig. 4 is a rear view of Fig. 3; g

Fig. 5 is a perspective View, to an enlarged scale, of the fitting or connection by means of which the infants toilet seat is secured to an adult toilet seat;

Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 5.

Referring now to the drawings, the conventional adult toilet seat is usually provided with the top or toilet cover H) which is commonly swingably secured, as by means of the brackets l 2 and I4, at the rear of the seat I6 so that it may be swung into closed or the open position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

- The top or cover I is thereby spaced above the end of the seat [6 thereby providing a space through which may be passed one part of my fitting or connection, by means of which the toilet seat assembly. l8 for an infant is connected, and which connection or fitting is generally indicated by the reference numeral 20, to mount it (the 2 infant toilet seat) in position on the seat 16 for adults, as I shall describe in greater detail.

The foldable toilet seat assembl l8 may comprise the back rest 22, which is secured by any suitable means, such as the screws 24, to the master hinge carrying member or leaf 25, on which the hinges 28, 30 and 32 are carried.

The hinge 32 is supported on the seat 34 positioning element 36 integral therewith and recessed or offset therefrom of the assembly 18, by means of the hinge leaf or element 38.

The hinge 28 is secured to the back transverse member fill and the hinge 30 is secured to the back transverse member 42.

The transverse member M] is secured to the side member 64 by means of the hinge E6 and its corresponding member or leaf 41, which may be mounted thereon b the screws 49, and the transverse member 42 is secured to the other side member 48 by means of the hinge 50 and its corresponding member or leaf 5|, which may be mounted thereon by the screws 53.

Thus, it will be recognized that the transverse back member 40 constitutes one leaf of the hinge 28 and 46 and the transverse back member 42 constitutes one leaf of the hinge 30 and 50. The master hinge member or leaf 25 constitutes the other leaves of the hinges 28 and 3D and one leaf of the hinge 32.

Extending from each side of the seat, carrying member 36 and secured thereto by any suitable means, I provide the supporting members 52 and 54, which rest upon the seat l6 when the assembly I8 is in the positions illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4.

These supporting members are provided with the bumpers 56 and 58 on the underside thereof and which bumpers may be made of any suitable material such as rubber, felt or plastic.

The side member 44 at the lower part thereof is secured to the supporting member 52 by means of the hinge 60 and its corresponding elements or leaves 6| and 62, which latter is secured to the side member by means of the screws 64 and the side member 48 at the lower part thereof is secured to the supporting member 54 by means of the hinge 65 and its corresponding elements or leaves 67 and 58, which latter is secured to the side member by means of the screws 10.

Thus, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the assembly 18 may be folded upon itself against the seat I 6 and as a unit raised about the hinge 12 against the top or cover It as illustrated by the dotted lines of Fig. 2 to thereby raise the assembly unit l8 from the seat 16 out of position thereon.

If desired, the front of each side member 44 and 48 may be slotted at M and 16, which slots hold the straps l8 and 80, which serve as a belt to hold an infant on the toilet seat.

In order to detachably hold in position the infants toilet seat assembly 18 on the seat 16, I mount on the assembly unit 18, the fitting or connection 20 by securing to the underside of the seat positioning element 36 at the rear thereof, the 2 member 62 as by the screws or rivets 84.

Extending to the rear from the hinge 12, I provide the plate like member or hinge leaf 86 which is passed through the opening between the top or cover IE] and the rear of the seat IS on the upper surface thereof.

At the rear of the seat It, I arrange the angle clamp member, the horizontal plate 88 of which is positioned underneath the seat 16 against the bottom surface, and which horizontal plate is substantially parallel to. the element or leaf 86 of the hinge i2, and the integral vertical plate 90 of which is held against the end of the seat 16. Thus, the element or leaf 86 and the plates 88 and 90, together form a U-shaped clamping means.

The outer edge 92 of the horizontal plate 68 is turned upwardly and the plate like member 85 intermediate its ends, substantially above the edge 92, is provided with the depression or crimp 96, which enhance the clamping action on the seat l6 imposed by the member 35 and the plate 83 by the tightening of the nuts 96 engaging the bolts 98 extending up from the upper edge of the vertical plate 90, and which hold the elements ofv the clampingmeans together in assembled position.

Different conventional adult toilet seats will vary in thickness and I provide the filler pieces or washers 106 that are positioned on the bolts 98 between the plate 36 and the vertical plate 99 so that the clamping member may be adjusted to the variations in seat thickness encountered in various installations.

After the plate 86 is secured to the vertical plate 99 and held tightly thereon, the hinge member N32 is secured on the element 16 of the Z member 82 by means of the screws 106.

In order to permit adjustment of the unit assembly ill from front to back on the seat 16, I provide the slot IE3 in the hinge member or leaf 102 which permits the assembly unit !8- to be moved into the proper desired position of mounting. The hinge member or leaf N32 is preferably provided with the downwardly inclined end H0, corresponding to the angular inclination of the inner body of the 2 member 82- to thereby limit rearward movement of the hinge or leaf member I92 upon adjusting the position of the seat assembly l8.

It will now be. recognized that I have provided a universal fitting or connection by means of which an infants toilet seat may be readily secured to any type of conventional adult toilet seat and which fitting or connection is so hinged that, if desired, the infant toilet seat assembly may be swung away from the adult toilet seat on which it is mounted.

While I have shown and described a certain specific example of my invention, it will be understood that such example is illustrative only and is not given as a limitation, since other modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art.

Hence, I do not intend to limit myself thereto, but intend to claim my invention as broadly as may be permitted by the state of the prior art and the terms of the appended claim.

I claim:

In combination, an adult toilet seat, an infants toilet seat to overlie the adult toilet seat, a Z member, one leg of the Z secured to the infants toilet seat and the other leg of the Z positioned above the first mentioned leg by the inclined element of the Z, a screw upstanding from the second mentioned leg of the Z, a hinged member comprising an intermediate hinge connecting a first mentioned plate to a second mentioned plate, said first mentioned plate having a. slot therein and secured to the second mentioned leg of the Z by means of the screw, said screw arranged in the slot in the first mentioned plate, said second mentioned plate having a crimp intermediate the hinge and the end of the plate, a member having a horizontal plate element and a vertical plate element upstanding from the horizontal plate element and a. bolt on the vertical plate element securing said member to the second mentioned plate, said horizontal plate element having an upturned edge spaced from. the vertical plate element, said vertical plate element positioned in rear of the adult toilet seat, said horizontal plate element positioned under the adult toilet seat and said second mentioned plate positioned on top of the adult toilet seat, said crimp arranged to bite into the top of the adult toilet seat and said upturned edge arranged to clamp the adult toilet seat upon tightening the bolt.
