nitecl States Patent 2,804,630 CHILDS TOILET SEAT SUPPORT BRACKET ASSEMBLY Leo M. Gould, Merrill, Wis. Application February 3, 1956, Serial No. 563,336 4 Claims. (Cl. 4-23 9) This invention relates generally to seats for toilet bowls and is more particularly concerned with a novel childs toilet seat support bracket assembly whereby the childs toilet seat is readily disposed in a proper relief position, and may be available in an accessible position adjacent a toilet stool which it cooperates.
At present advised, conventional childs toilet seats when mounted on a conventional toilet stool in some cases prevent closing of the toilet seat and cover, mounting the childs toilet seat on the seat results in marring the finish on the toilet seat' and cover, as well as being'awkward to handle, at times being stowed on the floor of a bathroom providing an unsightly appearance, and generally providing a constant source of irritation to the parents, nurses, etc. of the child using the same.
A primary object of invention is to provide a novel childs toilet seat combination including a novel childs toilet seat support bracket assembly overcoming the shortcomings of the prior art, encompassing all the beneficial features thereof, and including attended desirable features of storage in an accessible position for ready disposal in a relief position on a toilet stool with which it cooperates.
A further object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide a novel childs toilet seat support bracket assembly usable with different conventional childs toilet seats.
Another object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide a novel childs toilet seat support bracket assembly including a support member securable on a toilet bowl, a horizontally reciprocable and pivotal support strap element on said support member wherein the support strap element includes transverse hinge means pivotally carrying thereon a hinge assembly wherein the hinge assembly is pivotal to have a leaf portion thereof overlying the support strap element when the childs toilet seat is disposed in a relief position and further permitting the childs toilet seat to be stowed or hung in a readily accessible position adjacent the rear side portion of a toilet bowl upon which the assembly is mounted.
A still further object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide a childs toilet seat in combination with ;a novelsupport bracket assembly which is readily and economically manufactured, easily installed, used, and maintained, and practical, serviceable and utilitarian for the purpose intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will :become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying .drawings'forrning a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer 'toli'ke parts throughout, and in which:
Figure ,1 is a fragmentary :side' elevational view of a toilet st ol in uding a pivoted tolet seat and .cover, showing the novel childs toilet seat support bracket assembly mounted thereon, :with the childs toilet seat being disposedin a relief position;
Figure 2 a ifiCtifiOIlfil nview taken substantially on line 2-2 of Figure 1, showing2in phantom lines the position of the childs toilet seat when stowed and not in use;
Figure-3 is ;an enlarged perspective view of the novel childs toilet seatsupporthracket assembly disposed in the position assumed when the childs toilet seat is in the relief position shownrinFigure 1;
Fia r 4 is an en arged .perspectiye view similar to Figure 3, showing the relative position assumed by the Z,$@4,30 Patented Sept. 3, 1957 parts when the childs toilet seat is stowed adjacent a toilet stool upon which the support bracket assembly is mounted; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side elevational view similar to Figure 1, showing the childs toilet seat and novel support bracket assembly in the position assumed when the childs toilet seat is stowed in a readily accessible position adjacent the toilet stool. I
Referring to the drawings in detail, a fragmentary por-' tion of a toilet stool is indicated generally at 10 including the conventional porcelain stool 12 having a rear flange portion 14 through which extends a hinge assembly 16 fof hingedly supporting a conventional toilet seat 18 and cover 20, the hinge assembly 16 generally incorporating a pair of transversely spaced hinge support bolts 22 and 24 extending through suitable vertical aperture portions in the flange 14 of the toilet bowl.
The novel childs toilet seat support bracket assembly is indicated generally at 26, said assembly including a support member 28 comprising a plate element of any suitable character and material, having extending into its rear edge portion 30 a pair of spaced notch or groove portions 32, 34 extending therethrough. The support member 28 has extending vertically from the upper surface portion 36 thereof an integral pivot or mounting pin 38 which slidably and reciprocably receives an elongated strap element 40 which includes a longitudinally extending transverse slot portion 42 disposed on the previously mentioned pivot pin element 38. Considering Figures 3 and 4, it will thus be observed that the support strap element 4% may be moved or reciprocated in a horizontal plane within the limits of the slot portion 42 and pivoted to .a laterally disposed position as seen in Figure 4. The support strap element 40 will be of a sufiicient length to permit an' end portion of the same to extend over the side end portions 44 and 46 of the support member 28, and also extend beyond an underlying side portion of the toilet stool 12,
The support member 28 will be mounted on the toilet stool 12 in overlying relationship relative to the flange portion 14 thereof, by means of the previously mentioned notches 32 and 34 of said support member, being disposed beneath the conventional bolt-shoulders 48 normally found on the mounting bolt portions 22 and 24 .of the hinge assembly 16,. The aforementioned means i. e. notches 32 and 34 permit the incorporation or the mounting of the support member 28 on a conventional toilet stool; however, other suitable means (not shown) may be utilized on other types of toilet stools.
The support strap 40 includes on its end portion 50 transversely extending hinge means 52 extending transversely across said end portion 50, and rotatably support- 'ing one hinge leaf 54 of a mounting hinge assembly indicated generally at 56. The hinge assembly 56 incorporates a second hinge leaf portion 58 transversely pivoted by hinge means 60 to the hinge leaf 54, and has extending transverselytherethrough a plurality of suitable screw apertures 62 receiving thereihrough suitable securing screws for mounting the childs toilet seat support bracket assembly on a conventional childs toilet seat indicated generally at 64. The childs toilet seat 64 may conveniently include a rearwardly extending medial portion 66 upon which the hinge leaf 58 may be suitably secured as previously mentioned.
The childs toilet seat 64 includes the conventional seat portion 68 having a suitable back rest 70 thereon and may include suitable oppositely disposed bracket elements secured on a lower surface portion thereof in any suitable manner, said bracket elements being identified at '72 and including a laterally extending portion 74 engageable on .the upper surface of the toilet bowl and the depending portion 76 disposed within the toilet bowl 12 and preventing accidental lateral shifting of the toilet seat 68 about the pivot pin 38 of the novel assembly.
Observing Figures 1, 2 and 3, when the childs toilet seat is to be disposed in a position of use or a relief position, the hinge leaf portion 54 will be pivoted into overlying relationship relative to the upper surface of the strap support element 40 and the seat 68 will be suitably supported on a forward underlying portion of the toilet stool 12. Thus the hinge means 52 and the hinge assembly 56 provides an articulated joint permitting vertical pivotal movement of the cooperating hinged parts. After the childs toilet seat has been used, the same may be raised away from the toilet stool 12 by virtue of the previously mentioned hinge connections, and the support strap 40 being pivoted about the pivot pin element 38, see Figure 4, the childs seat and support strap may be swung to the side of the stool, where, by means of the slot 42 the childs seat may be extended beyond the side of the stool after which the childs toilet seat may be disposed in a hung or depending relationship relative to the toilet stool as clearly seen in Figure 5. When it is desired again to use the childs toilet seat, the seat portion 68 is pivoted vertically by virtue of the previously mentioned hinge connections and disposed once again into the overlying or relief relationship shown in Figure 1 relative to the toilet stool 12.
Thus there has been disclosed a childs toilet seat combination in conjunction with a novel childs toilet seat support bracket assembly which fully conforms with the objects of invention heretofore set forth.
Although one type of childs toilet seat has been disclosed herein, the novel support bracket assembly is readily usable with other types of childs toilet seats.
Various positional directional terms such as forward, upper, etc. are utilized herein to have only a relative connotation to aid in describing the device and it is not intended to require any particular orientation with respect to any external elements.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact description and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
