COMBINATION CHAIR AND TABLE Filed March 2. 1946 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Leo Dion Patented May 29, I951 [TED LSTATJES is The invention herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings relates to furniture and particularly household. and porch furniture and has for one of its objects to provide a combination table and chair.
This invention has for another object to provide a convertible table and chair.
A further object of this invention is to provide a piece of furniture capable of use either as a card table or a side chair.
There is also the object of providing a table and chair combination which is formed of a maximum of four pieces of material, or which may be formed of only three (pieces of material, or which could be formed of a single sheet of plastic metal or plywood if found desirable.
Other features and advantageswill become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an end elevational view of the invention,
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the invention,
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 1 showing the article in a different position,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the device shown as a chair,
Figure 5 is a similar view shown as a table,
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of the parts from which the device is made, and
Figure '7 is an end view of a modification.
In the accompanying drawings, it! refers to the complete device which consists of a chair [I and table I2, both being one and the same piece of furniture shown in two inverted positions relative to one another. The article as illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 consists of four members [4, I5, 16 and l! respectively.
In the position shown in Figure l of the drawings M is the rear support for the chair I I, while I5 is a combination seat [8 and back rest 19, and members It and I! are the arms of the chair. To the upper inner edge 2E3 of the memher It the returned flange 2! of the upper edge 22 of the back is is fixedly attached. From the edge 22 the back 19 inclines down and outwardly and below the arms l5 and Il' is curved out as at 23 to form the substantially horizontal seat It. The front legs 2 5 and 25 of the chair are secured to the down curved forward edge 26 of seat l8 as at 26 and 2'! from which point they continue up vertically to form arm supports 28 and 29 and from their upper bends 39 and 3| they incline down and extend inwardly to the slots 32 and 33 in the opposite side edges 34 and 35 of the member [9, to form the arms 36 and 31 of the chair. The inner ends 38 and 39 of said arms seat in and project through the slots 32 and 33 and the extreme terminants are inclined down to form flanges t!) which are fixed to the substantially central portion 22 and 43 of said member I4 to provide rigid bracing therefor.
When the article is to be used as a bridge table it is turned over upon the front legs 24' which form a support base from which the members 88', I9, 36 extend to form legs for the table member I4 which forms the table l2, the arms 36' also forming other legs for the table l4.
From the foregoing it will be seen that two complete pieces of furniture are provided from only the four members Id to I! seen in Figure 6 of the drawings. While these members are preferably cut from sheet plastic, it is evident that they may be made from metal or plyboard.
In Figure 7 of the drawings is shown a modification in which it will be seen that the entire device 44 may be cut from a single sheet of material, the members 45, 45, 41, 48, 49 and 50 being integral throughout and shaped to form the article 46 usable either as a chair or table.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having thus described the invention that those versed in its particular art will fully understand how to make and use the same, as well as its functions, and without having attempted to detail all of the forms in which it may be made, all of its advantages, or all of the uses to which it may be put, it is declared that which is claimed as new and sought to be protected by Letters Patent is:
l. A combination chair and table comprising a substantially fiat rear support adapted to be used selectively as a table top and chair support, angular support members secured to said rear support adjacent the longitudinal center thereof, said support members being adapted to serve selectively as arm rests and a complete leg frame and base, means secured to said rear support interlocked and secured to said angular support members for strengthening said support members and for seating purposes, said means comprising a fiat sheet having bends therein to form the seat and having slots interconnected with said support members.
2. In a combination chair and table, a substantially fiat rear support, means secured adjacent the longitudinal center of said rear support for selectively supporting said rear support and for serving as arm rests, a flat sheet member having bends therein secured to said rear support, said selective means comprising flat support members having relatively angularly disposed sections, a first of said sections of each flat support being secured to said rear support and forming arm rests.
3. In a combination chair and table, a substantially fiat rear support, means secured adjacent the longitudinal center of said rear support for selectively supporting said rear support and for serving as arm rests, a flat sheet member having bends therein secured to said rear support and said selective means forming a leg frame and for seating purposes, said selective means comtions of each fiat support being secured to said rear support, a second of said sections of each flat support forming a leg base, and said sheet member having slots operatively engaging the first section.
