1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in` a boiler construction and the principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a boiler construction which is efcient in its operation, is economically manufactured, and is adapted for many and various purposes.
According to my invention, the boiler components are preformed and are readily assembled to provide a composite structure. A multitude of adjacent water and heating surfaces are provided which result in rapid heat transfer and improved operating eiciency.
The novel construction of my invention is characterized by a cooling head or Water chamber that is disposed at the end of the combustion chamber and is connected to the water space of the boiler. This chamber is so disposed that it is at right angles tothe fire thereby to best pick up radiant heat. It is so constructed and connected to the water space that it increases water circulation in the boiler by a therm'o-siphonic action.
As a special feature of the invention the water chamber functions to cool or protect the adjacent end plate of the boiler against excessive heat and to eliminate the necessity of the usual insulation.
All of the above objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts thereof, as will fully appear by a perusal of the description below and by various specific features Awhich will be hereinafter set forth.
To the above cited and other ends and with Y the foregoing` and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction vand in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed `out in therclaim hereunto annexed and more fully deand lower walls 4 and 8 Vrespectively which are preferably semi-circular in shape, as shown.
A wall 8 which may be called the inner forward wall extends between the side and upper and lower walls and will preferably be formed from sheet metal having its marginal edges secured to the walls of the shell by welding or the like at I0.
VA wall I2 at the opposite or rear end of the shell extends between the walls thereof. A lower portion of this wall' I2 is disposed inwardly from the rear end of the shell and has a horizontal portion I4 and a vertical portion I6 at the rear end of the shell. This wall I2 is secured to the shell by welding at its marginal edges as indicated by I8.
For convenience, the right hand end of the boiler is referred toas the rear end and the opposite end is referred to as the forward end.
A rear end plate 23 is provided which is removably secured to the shell by studsV and nuts indicated by 22. The studs are secured to and extend forwardly from an angle or angles 24 and which is desirable to provide access thereto.

It will be noted thata yrear space 30 is'provided between the lower portion of AWall I2 and plate 20 and that a forwardspace 32 is provided between wall and plate or plates 28. o
A combustion chamber 34 is provided which is preferably in the form of an elongated tube. Its forward end extends through the rear inner wall I2 and its forward end extends through inner wall 8 as shown. -This member 34 is securedto walls 8 and I2 and to member 28 as by welding at 36, 38 and 40, all as is shown.
A bale 42 is disposed lbelow the combustion chamber `34 which extends horizontally, as shown, andrmay be supported by member 34 by-being welded thereto, or supported Vin any` other vwell known manner.
A plurality of tubes 44 extend between and through the walls Sand I 2 and have opposite ends secured thereto as by welding at 46 and 48, as
shown.
Y Stay rods 50 extend between the side walls 2 and have opposite ends secured thereto. Other stay rods 52 extend between wall 8 and portion II of wall I 2 and have opposite ends secured thereto. f QA water compartment 54 is provided in the space 30. It has lower hollow connections 56 extending .through and secured to Wall I2 and upper hollow `vconnections 58 similarly extending to and 55 extends between walls 51 and 59 of the member 54Y and plate 20 is provided with an opening 2| in register with the stay member. A cover` plate 23 is provided for movement on said plate 2U so as to be movable to and from the opening 2l. The member 54 is disposed at the end of the combustion chamber so as to be at rig-htrangles to the fire and to thereby most efliciently pick up heat.
Member 54 connected to the water space of the boiler functions with a thermo siphonic action to circulate water thereby to increase the overall efficiency and capacity of the boiler and fory best results it is connected at a point near the bottom of the boiler, as shown.
As an added function, member 54 acts to keep the adjacent plate cool thereby reducing the amount of insulationv usually required at the end of the boiler if not eliminating the same entirely. The stay tube provides a peek hole directly to the combustion chamber which is highly desirable, the water around the stay keeping it cool While the peek hole tube performs the function of a stay.
An outlet 60 is provided in the upper wall 4 and an inlet 62 is provided in the lower wall 6. The boiler may be used for hot water or steam and the outlet may be connected to any desired system from which the return thereof is connected to member 621 A connection 66 is provided for conducting fiue gases to a stack and the forward plate 28 is provided with an opening 68 for a fuel burner. An outlet 'l0 is provided in lower wall 6 which may be used for draining the boiler.
Although not shown, refractory materialv may, if desired, be employed in the combustion chamber, and a fuel burner of any desired form may be disposed on the plate or plates 68 and extended into the combustion chamber.
With the boiler connected in a system and containing water and a fuel burner in the combustioncharnber 34, the products of` combustion and hot gases extend in the direction of; arrows atothe flue connection 56.
Water surrounds the combustion chamber: 34 and` tubes 44' and is contained within water chamber 54. Thev hot gases'- impinge thev walls ofthe chamber 54 at right angle to the combustion chamber and tubes for the transfer Aof heat' directly to the water for quick and efficient heating.
The member 54 brings about rapid-water circu.- lation while at the same time it functions to cool the plate 2G and provides a peek hole asset forth heretofore.
Return water to the boiler enters inlet 62 and is deflected by baflie wall'42 longitudinally and transversely upwardly and around the combustion chamber rather vthan by'directly'impinging said chamber.
The wall I4 closing'the upper end of space 30 underlies the upper portion of the water space-to aid in the transfer of heat andeiiiciency in opera'- tion.

Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications 'and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A boiler construction comprising in combination, a longitudinal shell having side'and upper and lower walls, a rear wall secured to the said Walls of the shell and having a iower'portion disposed inwardly and forwardly from an upper portion thereof, a rear plate secured to the rear ends of the side and lower walls of the shell cooperating with the last mentioned walls and lower portion thus providing a combustion space, a forward inner wall secured at marginal edges to the side and upper and lower Walls and spaced inwardly from the forward ends of said walls, plate means secured to the forward ends of said upper and'side and lower walls and forwardly of said forward inner wall thus providing a flue space;
said plate means being provided with a combus- Itwill be observed that the platesV 211 and 2S forms without departingromthe essentialchartion chamber opening, a longitudinal combustion tube having a forward end connected to said plate means around the opening therein and a rear end extending through and secured to thelower portion of the rear wall and opening into said combustion space inwardly of said rear plate, sep arate longitudinal flue tubes disposed at the sides of and above said combustion tube and having opposite ends extending through and secured to the lower portion of the rear wall and forvv'ard inner wall and opening into the spaces adjacent thereto, said upper wall provided with an outlet and saidy lower wall providedwith an inlet disposed below said combustion tube and between the lower portion of the rear wall and. the forward inner wall, and a baiiie plate disposed transversely between said combustion tube and inlet, all adapted and arranged whereby a Water space is provided'around'said combustion tube and flue tubes and over the space between said rear plate and lower portion of the rear wall, a` water compartment disposed in the space between the rear plate` and lower portion of thei rear wall and rearwardlyofY and spaced from the rear end of said combustion chamber', and hollow connections extending from upper and lower sides of said compartment and'having ends extending through and secured to the lower portion of the rear wall.
