UNITED STATES WILLIAM HANNA, OF GILROY, CALIFORNIA.
PATENT OFFICE.
STEAM CYLINDER AND PISTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,309, dated February 28, 1882. Application filed October 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HANNA, of Gilroy, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Cylinders and Pistons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The object of my invention is to obviate concussion in the operation of pistons in steamcylinders; and to this end my invention consists in aspring-cushion applied to the pistonroll, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, which 1s a longitudinal section of a cylinder containing my improvements.
A is the cylinder, having steam-ports (b a, as usual.
B is the piston, fixed on a tubular rod, 0, that works through stuffing-boxes in both oyl inder-heads.
D is a rod, extending through and carrying the rod 0 and piston, and which is to connect to the crank.
On the rod D, near the ends of tube 0, are nuts or screw-collars 0, between which and the ends of the tube are spiral springs b. These springs are adjusted in their tension by turning the nuts 0, and allow endwise movement of the tube on therod D under the steam-pressure.
The cylinder A is provided near each end with a U-shape steam port or pipe, (1, opening at both ends into the cylinder, and fitted in the end most distant from the cylinder-heads with a check-valve, 0, opening outward. The ports d are placed in such relation to steamports a that they are open at opposite sides of the piston B when the piston covers the port a, and before it has reached the end of the stroke, thus furnishing a pa'ssage'forlive steam from behind the piston to the front for cushioning the piston.
In operation, as the piston starts forward by the inlet of steam, the rod D is started; but the full force is not expended on the rod until the spring!) is compressed, thus relieving the rod of sudden jerks. When the piston nears the end of its stroke, it is cushioned by the steam passing in front of it. It will be seen that this steam is taken from that in use, and the volume of steam used for cushioning, instead of being immediately exhausted, remains to start the piston back, thus effecting a saving.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with cylinder A and piston-rod D, of tube 0, piston B, nuts 0, and springs b, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM HANNA.
