POCKET DENTURE BRUSH Filed Nov. 13, 1947 3nventor g -Wansew W la/J (Ittomeg.
Patented June 27, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE POCKET DEN TURE BRUSH Hazel B. Hansen, Glendale, Calif. I Application November 13, 1947, Serial No. 785,598
3 Claims. (Cl. 132-84) My invention relates to dental appliances and,
especially relates to an article intended to be used by the wearers of dentures, and is particularly designed to be sufiiciently small and inconspicuous so a to be carried in a woman's purse or in a man's pocket.
The article, while primarily designed for the wearers of dentures, may of course also be used,
by persons who are more comfortable, if after eating, they are able to clean food from between irregularly spaced or crowded natural teeth or from under dental bridges.
Persons having to wear dental plates or dentures are very often inconvenienced and subjected to discomfiture by particles of food lodging between the denture and the gums or roof of lower portion of the mouth, thereby causing discomfort as well as impairing the fit of the plates; and an object of my invention is to provide a novel article which will enable such persons to immediately and inconspicuously remove any foreign particles that may cause such discomfiture, without the embarrassment of having to carry with them a number of special brushes, tubes of paste and the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel tooth and/or denture cleaning set which in addition to a tooth-cleaning brush, may if desired carry a supply of dentifrice or cleaning material, instead of a denture powder.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel article of the kind described which is provided in addition to a brush and a supply of cleansing material, may also carry an additional supply of material such as a supply of make-up paste or lip stick.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel article of the kind described in which the interfitting parts are arranged so as to be fitted together and taken apart with a maximum of ease, and which when in carrying position will be compact and easily carried in a lady's handbag or purse or in a man's pocket without being conspicuous.
The invention comprises the parts and combination of parts and arrangement and assembly thereof as will more particularly hereinafter appear from the description thereof and as pointed out in the claims.
Other objects, advantages and features of the invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detail description and the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention in a form I at present deem preferable.
2 Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a pocket denture brush constructed in accordance with my invention, and being shown fitted togetherin collapsed position for carrying purposes.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the article arranged for use, such as for example, as a tooth.
brush. 1
Fig. 3 is a view partly in plan and partly in section; and taken on irregular line 33, Fig. 2;
but showing the parts detached or separatedfrom each other, to more clearly illustrate the con-- with a closed end 10 and with bayonet slots l2,"
formed in the wall of the cas toward its open end. Holes l3, l3 are provided in the handle [0 for ventilation purposes. A brush I4 is pro- .vided with a back I la preferably of curved form and bristles [4b are arranged in spaced tufts of varying length, and extend therefrom, but obviously however, the form of the brush back and arrangement of the bristles may be varied as may be found expedient; I
The back of the brush [4 is fitted into a base I6 having an outside diameter less than the inside diameter of the handle or case I0 and is provided with projecting pins I8 adapted to fit into the bayonet slotslZ in the handle l0 so that the brush may be secured in nested condition in the handle 10 (Fig. 1), or with the brush projecting outwardly from the handle for use, as shown in Fig. 2.
I utilize the brush base I 6 to constitute part of a receptacle 20 for a. denture powder or a cleansing material such as a tooth powder or dentifrice and preferably though not necessarily I provide an additional part 22 to complete the receptacle part 20 and brush base I6, and these are provided with parts by which they may be easily and quickly secured together, and the part 22 is preferably secured to the handle ID if desired, through an intermediate member 28 for reasons hereafter explained, although the base I6 and part 22 may be directly connected to the handle The chamber or receptacle 20 is preferably formed in the part 22, that is provided with a threaded end 24 adapted to be screwed into a threaded axial bore 26 formed in the brush base It is advantageous to provide a receptacle for material often used to aid the wearer in make-up,
such as lip stick after use of an article of this character, and for this purpose I provide a container 28 provided with means by which it may be connected both to the part 22 and the handle Ill. As clearly shown in Fig. 3 the container 28 is formed .as 'a: tubular member having a closed end and two pairs of pins 30 and 32, adapted to respectively engage in a pair of bayonet slots 24 and I2, and which are respectively formed in the' wall of an axial recess 36 provided in the base of part 22, and in the handle l 0. The interior of container 28 may be filled with paste, adhesive material, as for example, lipstick of the wearers' desired shade, which the user may touch up her lips with, after brushing the teeth or denture plates.
I It will'be seen from the foregoing that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and compact arbe easily and quickly assembled into position for use or for carrying the same in compact form in a purse or pocket; and whereby a person who has false teeth or dentures may clean the same after eatingand'apply denture powder, or brush the teeth after eating, and which operation will not be conspicuous to others. That is to say, my invention maybe carried in a persons purse or pocket'without detection, and'enable such person to easily andquickly clean the teeth or dentures 1 and apply denture powder. while in a bath or 1 rest room without associates or friends knowing that such an operation is beingperformed.
I claim: I 1. A dental appliance including: a tubular handle; a base member; brush meanssecured in said base member; interfittingmeans carried by said base and said tubular handle effective to secure said brush means in nested position in the handle and projecting therefrom for use;- a member'detachably secured to said base member and having a diameter equal to that of the handle,
andprovided with a recess in one end; 2; container having an outside diameter smaller than the inside diameter of the handle andjadapted' to be detachably secured in saidrecess'and to project therefrom; andinterfitting means on the proj ecting. end of said container engaging with the interfitting means onthe handle whereby when" the brush is arranged to project from the handle for use, the container member efiectiveto secure the base member and member detachably secured thereto to said handle member.
ticle-for use as a denture brush, and which may 1' acting to secure said members to each other so as to close the open end of said cup-shaped member; othermea-ns on said cup-shaped member and said handle member coacting to secure said cupshaped' member to said handle member when said brushmeans are extended for use; and
means on said base member coacting with the means onsaid handle member to secure said base member and handle member when said brush meansis inserted in said handle member.
' 3. A pocket. denture brush comprising a tubular handle member, having an open end; a base member having bru'sh means connected thereto;
I a part member having a'reducedportion extendingtherefrom adapted to be detachably connected to said base member, and provided with a chamber extending through said reduced portion and in'to said partgand being closed when connested-t0 said basemember; said part member also being provided with another chamberat its end opposite said first mentioned chamber; a cup shaped member adapted to fit into said'other chamber; means'to securesaid cup shaped member to said part member and when engaged to close the open end of said cup shaped member; coacting means'on said base members and the terior' of said-handle member to securesaid brushmeans I in nested position within the handle; and means on saidcup member coacting with means onsaidhandle member to secure said brush means in projected position from the handlel I I B.
