UNITED STAT S P TENT ()Frrca,
WILLIAM M. HAZEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.-
B'UTTON- FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,529, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed October 1, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM M. HAZEL,ot' New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners for Boots and Shoes and Other Articles of Apparel, 810.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to fasteners to secure buttons to shoes, gaiters, and various articles of clothing, and also to acombined button and fastener, all as more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the button and fastener combined; Fig.2, a similar view of the fastener alone; Fig. 3, a perspective view of my fastener Fig. 4, a front or edge elevation of the combined button and fastener; Fig. 5, a similar view of my combined button and fastt ner, Fig. l, clinched to the fabric.
My fasteneris made of a single piece of wire, preferably flat wire; and it consists of a central crossed loop, a, equidistant from each end of the fastener, which ends are bent downward, forming the prongs a a. The wire is bentinto the required shape by machinery which forms no part of my present invention, and in the combined article shown in Figs.l and 4 the button I) is inserted into place, also, by machincry. The wire prongs are slightly flattened at their ends a, which makes them a trifle thinner and also broader there, instead of being pointed. The object of this construction is to enable the said fasteners to stand upright upon their two prongs in the tool used for securing the button to the fabric.
In my fastener shown in Fig. 2 the crossed loop a is left open at the bottom until the button is inserted, and then the two lower sides of said loop are brought together, securely holding the button in place, as in Figs. 1 and 4, the loop now being not only crossed, but closed, and in this condition the combined article is ready for the market. This article is secured to the fabric and clinched therein by a suitable tool or instrument, (which is a separate invention), the two prongs passing each other, as shown in Fig. 5.
My improved fastener possesses several ad- (No model.)
vantages over those now in use. By reason of the loop being in the center the strain or pressure on the fastener is equalized; but-if my loop were not crossed the open shank or eye of the button I) would have a tendency in use to work away from the center and bring all the strain upon the shoulder cor c of the fastener shown and mycombined button and fastener saves time and labor by being all ready for adjustment to the fabric, and is theinostdurable and secure form of my invention, because, as stated, the crossed loop is closed at the bottom, thus affording an additional check to dislodgment of the buttons.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
1. A button-fastener consisting of a single pieceof wire bcntso as to form a central crossed loop equidistant from each end of the said fastener, and having these ends bent downward, forming projecting prongs, with shoulders about midway between the loop and the end of each prong, as shown and described.
2. A button-fastener made of fiat wire and consisting ofa central crossed loop equidistant from each end of the fastener, and having these ends bent downward and flattened at their terminations, as shown and described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, the combined button and fastener described, consisting of the button I) and flat wire fastener having central crossed loop a, closed at the bottom to hold the eye of the button, and
downward-projecting prongs a, the ends of which areequidistaut from the central crossed loop, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of September, 1881.
WM. M. HAZEL. Witnesses:
STANLEY S. STOUT, HAROLD G. UNDERWOOD.
