E. DRISOOL, Jr.
- TOY WHIP.
Patented Dec. 6,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD DRISOOL, JR., OF FALL RIVER,MASS., ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO ANDREW JONES AND T. O. HENNESSEY, OF SAME PLACE.
TQY WHIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,507, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed May 9,1881. (No 1110.161.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DRISGOL, J r., of FallRiver, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy Whips; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an attachment'secured to toy whips; and it consists in providing such whips with a peg or tube on which a percussion-cap can beplaced, and with a hinged hammer, by which such cap can be exploded as the whip is snapped, and thus a loud report produced, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the whip having the peg provided with a percussion-cap and the hammer raised ready to strike the cap and explode the same when the whip is snapped. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view, partly in section, showing the whip-handle, the peg, the cap, and the hammer, as also the hammer as raised, in broken lines.
In the drawings, a is the whip-handle; b, the lash; c, a peg on which a percussion-cap can be placed, and d the hinged hammer, which may be hinged in the groove 0, or it may be hinged to the handle without making the groove 0. In place of the peg c, a tube may be used, as is the case in guns or pistols, and the hammer may be recessed, the same as gun or pistol hammers are made.
When a cap is placed on the peg or tube 0, 5 the whip quickly raised to snap the lash, and the downward motion quickly arrested, the hammer (1 will strike the cap and explode the same simultaneously with the snapping of the whip, and a much louder report is produced than can be done with other whips. It will thus constitute a desirable toy for the rising generation, and more particularly on the national celebration of the Fourth of July, endearing the memory ot'this day and generating 5 patriotic feeling.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The whip-stock having a nipple or cap-seat on the side thereof and a loosely-pivoted ham- 5o mer arranged to strike and explode the cap by its momentum without the aid of a spring, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ED WARD DRISCQL, JR.
