My present invention relates to toilets and has for an object to provide a water tight iiushing tank.
Another object of my invention is to provide a flushing tank having a free water inlet.
Another object of my invention is to provide in a flushing tank a spring actuated valve for closing the water outlet thereof.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a flushing tank having only one movable member.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a water and air tight flushing tank Other features and Iadvantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my tank taken on line I-I of Figure 3,
Figure 2 is a similar view taken on line 2--2 of Figure 3, certain parts being removed,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1, and
. Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
My device I consists of a tank I I within which is vprovided a vertical compartment I2 having side walls I3 and I4, preferably formed integral with the walls I5 and I6 of the tank. Said compartment is divided by an intermediate horizontal wall I1 integral with walls I3 and I4, whereby the said compartment is divided into upper or pressure and lower or valve chambers I8 and I9. An inner wall 20 closes said chambers by means of thumb screws 2| and 22, a gasket 23 sealing the connection between said wall 2U and the edges 24 and 25 of walls I3 and I4, to which it is sealed by said screws.
A top wall 26 is provided for the tank which seats upon a gasket 21, seated upon the upper edge 28 of the tank, the wall 26, being secured by screws 29. The walls I3, I4 and 2D have the upper edges 30, 3| and 32 sealed by a gasket 33, upon which the inner surface 34 of top 26 seats. The said top is provided with an integral depending boss 35 of a dimension to nt snugly into the upper end 36 of chamber I8, and forms a cap therefor.
Aligning bores 36 and 31, are provided in the members I1 and 35 to receive the plunger rod 38, which operates slidably therein and is normally held in down position by a spring 39, coiled there-around and held between the cap 35 and pin 40 on said rod. The bore 31 is enlarged and inclined at its upper portion 4I to receive packing 42, held compressed by a screwed-in cap 43.
The .bore 36 also extends into similar packing gland 44, provided in wall 26.
The lower end 53 of chamber I9 is of inverted conical form and is provided with three ports 45, 46 and 41, through walls 20, I3 and I4, re spectively, which lead into the water chamber 48 of the tank. Mounted directly above said ports is a tubular collar 49, within which is slidable a valve 50 having a cylindrical head 5I, snugly fitting` the said collar 49, and a tapering lower end 52 conforming to the contour of the said end.. 53, the upper edge 54 of which forms a seat for the collar 49. The valve member 50 is fixed to the lower end 55 of rod 38, whereby upon drawing up of the rod against the tension of spring 39 by means of the button 56 on the outer end 51 of the rod, the said ports 45, 46 and 41 will be opened to permit water in the chamber 48 to flow out through the outlet port 58 of the tank and into the brass pipe 59 screwed into the bottom wall I6 of the tank and leading to a toilet seat. An inlet pipe 60 threaded into bore 6I of said tank permits water to flow into and ll the chamber 48.
In order to .permit the chamber 4B to become substantially full of water, a small air passage 62 may be provided in the upper end of wall I3 her l2.
for air to escape into compartment I8 of mem- As the tank fills to near its top the pressure of air in said compartment will become greater than the pressure of water in inlet pipe so that a certain amount of air will be trapped in the extreme upper end 63 of the tank which will hold the extreme upper water line at a point 64 below the vent 62, thus preventing water from passing therethrough. Any other suitable valve means may be substituted for preventing air trapped in the tank from overcoming the water pressure and preventing filling of the tank.
From the foregoing it becomes evident that I have invented a meritorious flushing tank which can not become out of order under ordinary circumstances.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A liquid storage and flushing device comprising a liquid retaining tank, a closure having an opening with a sealing gland. said closure being normally in sealing engagement with said tank, a liquid inlet in said tank, means forming a compartment in said tank, a, substantially horizontal partition in said compartment separating it into a lower valve chamber and an upper pressure chamber, said partition having an aperture surrounded by a sealing gland, an outlet for said tank communicating with said valve chamber, a hollow head disposed slidably in said valve chamber and resilient means pressing said Valve head normally seated on said valve seat, a. slidable Valve stem extending from said valve head and extending through said chambers and terminating exteriorly of said tank'for manually operating said valve, said stem being passed through said sealing glands, and an air passage in said pressure chamber to receive air under pressure from said tank as liquidy enters said tank through said inlet, and means forming a passageway and arranged to be controlled by said Valve head for conducting liquid from said tank to and into said outlet.
