ADJUSTABLE DRYlNG-RACK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,160, dated November 29, 1881.

To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB R. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Drying-Racks and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.

My invention has for its obj ect to provide an adjustable rack of improved construction for warming articles of food, drying fruits and vegetables, and for other similar purposes, and which is designed to be attached to the hearth of a stove, and so arrangedin relation thereto as to permit of the drying-rack being readily raised or lowered to suit the heat of the tire, and to be as readily revolved over or oft' the stove; and it consists, essentially, of a supporting-frame which is secured to the'hearth of a stove by means of an overlapping band and clamping-screw, said frame carrying an upright rod provided with ratchet-teeth near its upper end, and with a horizontal frame which carries the drying-rack, and adapted to operate in connection with said ratchet-teeth, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a topplan view ot' the rack-frame, and Fig. 3 a detail view of rack-frame and supporting-rod.

Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting-frame, provided with projections at its lower end, which is adapted to fit the hearth of the stove, and to be clamped thereon by means 'of the set-screw a in the lower projection, as fully shown in Fig. 1, said frame being also provided with asocket, b, on the surface v of the upper projection, and with an upwardlyextending arm, c, having a circular opening in its upper end.

B represents the upright rod, which passes down through said circular opening and fits within the socket b, the upper part of the rod having attached thereto a ratchetplate, d, as fully shown in Figs. land 3.

C represents the horizontal frame, which carries the rack D, and is composed ot' the two arms c e', the lower one of which is provided with an opening adapted to engage with the teeth ot' the ratchet-plate d, and the upper one with a circular opening arranged to it over the top of the upright rod B, and which is also provided with a suitable l1andle,f, to operate the rack.

Upon the inner end of the upper arm, e', of the frame C is pivoted the spider frame g, which supports the drying-rack D, as fully shown in the drawings.

The construction of my invention being as described, it will be observed that in the operation ot the same the rack-frame can be readily raised or lowered upon the upright rod B by.operating the handle f so as to allow the arm of the frame to engage with the teeth of the ratchet-plate d, thereby locating the rack at a suitable distance above the top of the stove to obtain the required amount ot' heat. The rack may also be readily turned oli or over the stove bypushingthehandlefiu the proper direction.

In place of the supporting-frame A, a circular hole may be formed in the upper plate of the stove and a socket provided upon the hearth portion during the Operation of casting the same for receiving the vertical rod carryrying the frame and its rack.

The advantages of myinvention will be readily seen without a more minute description,in asmuch as it combines in its construction and operation a high degree of simplicity and utility with a ready adaptation to the purpose contemplated. Y

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- In an adjustable drying-rack, the combina' tion of the frame C, having handle'f, and provided with the wire-gauze rack D, with the vertical rod B, provided 'with the ratchet-plate d, and with the supporting-frame A, having arm c and socket b to hold the said vertical rod B, said frame A being also provided with clamping-jaws and screw a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
