Description

A. J. FABIS Feb. 21, 1950 COMB Origi nal Filed May 24, 1946 IN VEN TOR. F4 5/6,
ATTOR/VEYJT Patented Feb. 21, 1 950 UNITED "STAT COMB I Anthony J. Fabis, Chicago, Ill.
Original application May 24, 1946, Serial No. 671,971. Divided and this application August 26, 1947, Serial No. 770,646
My invention relates to combs and more particularly to combs having a receptacle combined therewith. The invention herein disclosed comprises a division of my copending application Serial No. 671,971, filed May 24, 1946.
An object of my invention is to provide a comb having a hollow back adapted to receive a varict'y of articles such as Bobbie pins, hairpins, straight pins, safety pins or the like.
A further object of my invention is to provide a com-b'having a hollow back forming a receptac'le for pins and the like, which receptacle is readily accessible but which can be securely closed to prevent spilling of the contents of said container.
A further object is to provide a receptacle providing a comb back including a longitudinally extending receptacle open at the top and a cover closing said open top of the receptacle and means slidably connecting said cover to said open top to close said receptacle, said means being slidable longitudinally of said receptacle to open the same and provide access thereto.
Other objects and advantages of my invention reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts thereof and will be readily understood by those skilled in the art upon reference to the acompanying drawing together with the following specification wherein the invention is shown, described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing a preferred embodiment of the invention; and
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on an enlarged scale and taken substantially on the plane of the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters have been used throughout to designate like parts, 40 designates a plurality of teeth of a hair comb which extend downwardly from the bottom of a back 4|. One end 42, of the back 4|, is formed to provide a longitudinally extending cylindrical recess 55 which is closed on the bottom, sides, top and one end. The open end edges 43 of the recess 42 are downwardly and longitudinally beveled to merge with the upper free edges of a longitudinally extending and substantially semi-cylindrical recess formed along the remainder of the upper portion of the back 4|. The remote end of the recess in the back 4| is closed by a substantially vertical wall 44, the outer surface 45 thereof providing a buttress or stop for a cover member 46 now to be described.
2 Claim. (01. 132-79) The cover 46 is substantially semi-cylindrical in form and provides an internal and substantiallysemi-cylindrical recess complementary to the recess of the back 4|. One end of the cover recess is open and is formed with upwardly beveled end edges 41 complementary to the edges 43 of the cylindrical recess 42 and adapted to abut thereagainst in end to end relation. The opposite end of the cover 46 is provided with a depending abutment 49 adapted to abut against the outer surface 45 of the back 4| when the cover is completely closed. outwardly of the buttress 49 the cover 46 is formed with an elongated extension 48 which provides a handle for actuating the cover. The cover 46 is connected to the back 4| in a recess closing position by a tongue and groove connection which comprises an inwardly directed longitudinally extending groove 5| on each side of the back 4| adjacent the free upper side edge thereof. Immediately above the grooves 5| there is provided a like extending and outwardly directed tongue 52. The cover 46 is provided on the inner surface thereof adjacent the free side edges with an inwardly directed longitudinally extending groove 53 and an adjacent and like extending tongue 54. It is readily apparent from Figure 2 that the tongues 54 of the cover 46 have a sliding fit in the grooves 5| of the back 4| while the tongues 52 of the back 4| have a sliding fit in the grooves 53 of the cover 46. It is noted from Figure 2 that the interfitting of the tongues and grooves is such that longitudinal sliding of the cover relative to the back only is permitted. It is also apparent from Figure 2 that the recessed cover and back combine to form a substantially cylindrical receptable 50 access to which may be obtained by sliding the cover 46 longitudinally of the back. At the same time the cylindrical recess 42 at one end of thevback provides a cup-shaped portion which may be utilized as follows: When the user of the comb desires to obtain a pin or the like from the receptacle 50 the cover 46 is slid back to the position indicated in Figure 1. Thereafter, the comb is tilted longitudinally so as to raise the handle end 48 thereof. When this has been done the pins or the like contained in the receptacle 50 will slide in the recess of the back down into the recess 42 of the right hand end of the back but are prevented from escaping therefrom by virtue of the cylindrical nature of such recess. A desired pin may now be readily selected and the receptacle again closed.
While I have shown and described what is now thought to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of other forms and expressions. Consequently, I do not limit myself to the precise structure shown and described except as hereinafter claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a comb comprising an elongated back and a plurality of teeth extending from the bottom thereof, a receptacle formed in said back and comprising a longitudinally extending and substantially semi-cylindrical groove open at the top formed in the top of said back and a substantially cylindrical recess formed in said back at one end of said groove, said recess being closed at one end and opening into said groove at the other end, the free edges of the open end of said recess being downwardly beveled to merge with the free upper edges of said groove at an obtuse angle, a substantially vertical wall closing the other end of said groove, a cover for said groove, said cover being formed with a substantially semi-cylindrical groove complementary to said first groove and adapted to form therewith a substantially cylindrical continuation of said recess, said cover having open end edges complementary to those of said recess and adapted to abut thereagainst in end to end relation, the free edges of said grooves being formed with complementary interfitting tongues and grooves connecting said cover and back together for relative sliding movement longitudinally of said back, and a closure for the other end of said cover groove, said closure including an elongated knob providing a hand grip for actuating said cover.
- prising an elongated member substantially cov Number extensive with said back and being formed with an elongated groove in the under surface thereof, means slidably connecting said cover to said back for sliding movement longitudinally thereof, and said cover including end edges complementary to said edges of said recess and adapted to abut the same in end to end relation to close the same in one position of said cover.
