This invention relates to nasal applicators of the character employed for administering nose drops of liquid medicament to nasal and facial passages, and especially to the lateral passages in which it is most desirable to deliver the liquid.
Many applicators used for this purpose cause the patient some discomfort during the delivery of the fluid, since by reason of the types of applicators employed, the patient is often required to assume an awkward position, with the head either tilted backwardly or propped up in such a manner as to attempt to promote the flow of the fluid into the nasal passages. In other cases, the applicator causes the fluid to drain down into the mouth rather than into the lateral facial passages, and often also, the fluid will run backwardly, drain out of the nostril in which the applicator is located and be thus inefficiently administered.
The present invention, therefore, has for its primary object the provision of an applicator which will permit the administration of the fluid easily and comfortably; which will tend to direct the fluid into the desired lateral passages for which it is intended, and which will permit the fluid to be easily and expertly administered by the patient with only a simple inclination of the head and without loss of the fluid, or its misdirection.
These and other objects are attained by the invention, a more particular description of which will hereinafter appear and be set forth in the claim appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein an illustrative embodiment of the invention is disclosed:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a nasal applicator constructed in accordance with the invention;

Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing, I indicates the body portion of the applicator, and 2 indicates the nozzle or outlet portion, while 3 indicates the handle or stem by which the applicator is conveniently handled and manipulated. The several parts, I to 3 inclusive are preferably formed integrally, the entire applicator being preferably produced from glass, or from a plastic or any other material suitable for the purpose and preferably a material which can be sterilized, if required.
The body portion l of the applicator provides a chamber in which the fluid or liquid 1 to be administered is contained as shown in Fig. 4, the same being delivered into-the interior of the body through the open end 5, out of which it is also delivered into the nasal passages. The body is provided with a closed end 4 and an upwardlyextending tubular nozzle portion 2 rises at the opposite end and is provided with the open upper end 5 constituting an outlet for the fluid 1 during the administration of the same. The nozzle or outlet 2 is preferably of substantially uniform diameter from the point where it rises from the body portion 1 to its open end, and it thus has straight walls which terminate at the top in a large-diameter outlet opening 5.
It is to be noted that the upper edge of the nozzle 2 is slanted or inclined as shown at 8 thus providing the nozzle 2 with a higher side wall 9 and the opposite lower wall portion l0. Extending downwardly from the body I below the nozzle 2 thereon, and substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle is a stem or handle member 3, permitting the applicator to be conveniently handled and manipulated. The top wall of the body 1 is provided with a small hole or air vent 6 so positioned that any normal tilting of the applicator during use or during application to or removal from the nostril will not cause the contained fluid 1 to be spilled out of the vent 6.
From the foregoing, the operation of the improved applicator will be readily comprehended. The fluid to be administered into the facial or nasal passages is placed into the body I of the applicator by being poured into the same through the opening 5, the applicator being held substantially horizontally at the time, or as shown in Fig. 1. The applicator is held in the hand by stem 3 and the nozzle portion 2 is inserted into the nostril through which the liquid is to be administered. In inserting the nozzle 2, it should be placed in position with the longer wall portion 9 of the nozzle directed toward the outer wall of the nostril, the short wall H! of the nozzle being located adjacent to the nose septum. At this time, the body portion I of the applicator will be then extending crosswisely below the nose. Holding the applicator so applied, the patients head is tilted sidewisely to an extent to so cause the liquid contents of the applicator to readily flow out of the open end 5 of the nozzle 2 through the nostril and into the lateral passages for which the treatment is desired. The angular or inclined end portion 8 on the nozzle 2 aids materially in the directional guidance of the fluid to be administered, and the air vent B in the top of the body of the applicator permits venting of the applicator and allows a ready flow of the fluid contents of the same into the nostril. The handle or stem 3 allows a leverage to be applied to the applicator, aiding the patient to quickly determine the proper inclination of his head required to deliver the fluid to the proper location.
