Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT WARREN, OE JEFFERSON, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING HEELS AND SOLES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,835, dated July 19, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT WARREN, of Jefferson, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful machine for cutting heels and soles as Well as counters and heel-stiffenings of leather for boots and shoes of any required size or shape; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing of a heel-cutting machine, which makes a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure No. l, is a view of the machine in perspective from the top, Fig. No. 2, shows a slide, thumb screw, &c., Fig. No. 3 is a knife.
The machine (in Fig. No. 1,) will be seen to consistof a castI iron frame A, A, A, with a plate of the same material V, V, attached to and covering the under side, except the central space marked Z, where the pieces of leather cut, fall through.
B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, are slides working freely in slots toward the center. These slides are moved toward the center space marked Z, or Jfrom it by means of thumb screws K, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T. The thumb screws enter the slides some distance as shown in Fig. No. 2, and hold them steadily upon the plate in the slots wherever placed.
On each of the slides are narrow shoulders marked ai, a1, ai, ae, on Which a thin steel knife Y, bent in the required form rests, with one end bearing against the knife Q., and the other end resting against and held in place by the slide B.
The knife Q, is movable and adjustable by means of a screw and nut at U Where it Works in a slot through the frame and Where it may be secured in any required position.
It Will be seen that by having knives of different lengths they may be adjusted to cut heels or other pieces for which the machine may be designed of any shape or size that can be required.
The operation of this machine is simple and efficient, being placed on the lowerbeam of a press which Works by foot and the leather cut in strips, the heel lifts are rap idlly cut ready to be pegged upon the boot or s oe.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The bent knife Y, resting on the shoulders m, of the movable slides as herein described and for the purposes herein specified.
2. I also claim the knife Y, resting on the shoulders as herein described in combination with the knife Q, adjusted as herein set forth and. by Which any size or shape of leathers may be cut ready to be sewed or pegged upon the boot or shoe.
ALBERT WARREN.
