Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT WARREN, OF JEFFERSON, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING SOLES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 23,516, dated April 5, 15559.4
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that- I, ALBERT WARREN, of Jefferson, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Cutting Soles for Boots and Shoes or Envelops of Any Required Size or Shape; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference be ing had to the annexed drawings, in which the whole is exhibited, consisting of a long shallow box, the bottom covered with sheet i'ron, and a press working with the foot.
A, A, A, A, are the outer pieces or frame of the box. On the bottom are placed a series of pieces of wood B, and C, with a crooked edge, along which is a knife (l) of elastic steel. crooked edges and the two pieces B, and O, are tacked together with a small piece of leather bringing the elastic knife snug within the crooked edges of the pieces B, and C, and thus the bottoni of the box covered with two pieces B, and C, and knife I, between them. In each of the pieces B, and O, are holes marked (F) in which are placed spiral springs and on these are laid pieces of thin hard wood in the shape of soles D, D, D, &c, These pieces are placed between the knives, I. By placing small blocks between the straight edges of C, and C, they may be greatly widened to out large soles or being close together they are much smaller. Different sizes may also be used to cut any required size. E, is a block against which the four screws G, G, Gr, G, work and which being screwed, brings the whole completely together.
H, is a projection of the bottom.
By placing each pair of pieces as B, and C, with a knife (I) between them, so as to cover the bottom in the manner represented in the drawing, that is, alternately, first with the toe to the left then a toe to the right, it will be seen that the soles cut will This knife is bent to tit these be alternately right and left soles, or each knife cuts on one side a right sole and on the other side (being turned) a left sole, with perfect accuracy and at the same time with the greatest economy of material.
In operation, which is with a press working with the foot (shown in a separate drawing) as you shore in and cut the several soles the forms D, D, D, &c., are thrown up by the springs (F) and with them the cut soles at the top and withdrawing the box the slide upon the press scrapes the cut soles all ofi' together.
The press I use is shown in another drawing` and is worked by the foot.
L, is the lever, worked by the foot.
M, is the upper beam.
N, is a block which coming upon the leather presses it upon the knives and cuts the soles.
O, a cleatupon the beam.
P, is a slide working freely in two mortises in the cleat O, and bearing its weight upon the box and when all the soles are cut (as they are alternately as the box is shoved in) on withdrawing the box the cut soles are scraped off together as before stated by the slide P.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A series of pieces covering the bottom of the box .like C, C, separated by a straight line through the center; together with the series of pieces like B, O, with the knife I, held securely between their crooked edges and arranged alternately with a toe to the right and left and covered by the forms D, D, D, &c., in the manner described; when these devices are combined with the slide l), arranged and operating as herein before specified.
ALBERT TAB-REN.
Witnesses I. BIGELow, JN0. H. JOHNSON.
