Description

Sept. 13, 1949. L. CROTEAU ADJUSTABLE TARGET Filed June 15, 1948 JNVENTOR. BY 0 Patented Sept. 13, 1949 UNITED STATES l ATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a game apparatus, more especially, a game in which a missile is thrown at a target.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus which functions, when the top is in a horizontal position as a target and in in an angular position, with respect to the surface on which the top supporting member rests.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this application,
Figure l is a plan view of a combination table and game apparatus embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an and elevation of the same when the device is used as a table.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation on a smaller scale when said device is used as a game; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation, on a still smaller scale.
In the particular drawings selected for more fully disclosing my invention, which drawings are to be considered as illustrative, merely, and not restrictive, Ii] represents a table top or target provided with suitable labeled areas, or other indicia, that may be used in scoring, for example, in the present embodiment, appears a centrally located bullseye H, and four circular areas 52, each containin one of the letters 13, A, L, L. It is to be understood, of course, that the scoring indlcia will depend entirely upon the manner in which the game is to be played. The labeled areas aforesaid are distinctively colored and the surrounding area preferably is painted with a contrasting color.
The top H! is secured rigidly to a suitable twopart support member of such conformation that the top may, at will, be placed in spaced parallel relation with respect to the suface on which the support member rests or else in angular relation to such surface. For this purpose, the support member is polyangular and, in the present instance, it is shown as semi hexagonal. The support member, preferably, is of metal of any suitable kind and may be metallic rods or tubes or strips. As shown in the drawings, the support member comprises two identical parts each being formed of a rod or the like bent in the shape of a semihexagon, each of the three legs of which is adapted to rest upon a flat surface and the two oppositely disposed legs of which terminate in portions shorter than the legs themselves, such portions being inclined to each other and each terminatin in a flange. One leg of the support member I 3, in the present instance, is shown resting on a flat surface l4 and the upper extremities of the legs thereof are bent inwardly and secured by screws IE, or any other suitable holdfast means, to the top ill, a piece of resilient material l6, preferably, being interposed between the support member and the top in order to reduce vibration caused by the impact of a ball against a target when the device is used as a game.
In Fig. 3 is shown the position of the device when it is used as a game. The device is rotated clockwise until the right hand leg of the hexagon rests on the floor of a room, or any other fiat surface. Preferably, as shown in the pesent case, two hexagonal support members !3, l3, are employed as shown in Fig. 4, and, in such case, said members are joined for rigidity by the cross piece ll.
When the apparatus is used as a game, a ball, preferably of the bouncing variety, is thrown against the target, bounces off, is caught by the player, and repeatedly thrown again, each time, at a selected area or scoring indicium; for example, each sign, symbol or designated area, may have a certain value and the player who has the highest score or the lowest score after a predetermined number of throws, will be the winner, or, to give another example, the player who strikes the areas B, A, L, L, in that order and then hits the bullseye, will be the winner.
Having thus described an illustrative embodiment of my invention without, however, limiting the same thereto, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A game apparatus, comprising a target member having a plane surface, said member carrying various scoring indicia, a two-part polyangular support member for said target member, whereby the latter may be placed at will in spaced parallel or angular relation with respect to the surface upon which said support member rests, means fixedly securing said target member to said support member and a cross piece rigidly connecting the two parts of said support member, said cross piece being parallel to the plane of said target member.
2. A game apparatus comprising a target member having a plane surface, said member carrying various scoring indicia, a two-part support member for said target member whereby the latter may be placed at will in spaced parallel or angular relation with respect to the surface upon which said support member rests, said support member comprising two identical spaced parts, each formed of a rod bent in the shape of a semihexagon, each of the three sides of which is adapted to rest upon a fiat surface, and the two oppositely disposed sides of which terminate in flanged portions shorter than the sides of said semihexagon. said flanged portions being inclined toward each other and terminating in oppositely disposed flanges and means for securing said target to said flanges.
