Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
JOHN T. BEVER, OF HAINESVILLE, MISSOURI.
BEDSTEAD CORD-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,788, dated July 19, 1859.
T o all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. BEvER, of Hainesville, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention applied to the bedstead. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of one of the tightening pins.
Similar letters of reference in each of the two igures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in a bedstead cord pin constructed in two parts, in the manner, and for the purpose hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
(A) in the drawing represents an ordinary bedstead frame. (B, B,) the cords which support the sack or form the bottom for the bed to rest upon.
(C) represents the cord pins. Each of these pins is composed of two parts (a, 5,). The part (66,) enters firmly into the top of the rail of the bedstead and has an enlargement at its upper end which forms a head with two flat sides. Through this head a round hole or eye (c) is formed and on the outer face ratchet teeth (CZ,) are cut as represented. The part (5,) passes horizontally through the hole or eye of the part (an) so as to turn in the same, itbeing made round so as to-correspond to the shape of the eye. On the inner end of the part (5,) a loop or other suitable device to attach the cord (B,) to, may be formed. The outer end has an enlargement which serves as a shoulder, and has ratchet teeth (6,) set just the reverse of those (6L) cut in its inner face. The ratchet teeth of the part (5,) lock with the ratchet of the part (a). The outer extremity of the part (5,) is made square so as to receive a wrench, and thus afford facilities for turning the part (5,) when necessary.
From the above description of parts it will be evident that if each of the cords is attached to the part (5,) of a pair of these pins, or one end of each cord Jfastened to one rail, and the other end to the partl (5,) of my improved pin, and the wrench applied to the square end of (5,) and turn-ed, the cord will he twisted, and consequently shortened, and brought to the proper tension, and as the part (5,) cannot turn backward or in a reverse direction of the arrow on account of the reverse set of the ratchet teeth (d, 6,) of the parts (a, 5,) said tension will be retained after the wrench is withdrawn and the strain of the hand ceases.
What I claim as my invention is- A bedstead cord pin consisting of two parts (a, 5,) which are constructed and operated in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein described.
JOHN T. BEVER.
