This invention relates generally to lamp guards I and in particular to a non-rolling guard for a portable lamp.
Portable lamps used in work shops, garages, or other places where the lamp will receive very rough usage have been provided with guards to prevent damage to the lamp. Various constructions have been used but in all constructions, difficulty is encountered in positioning the lamp in just the proper position to illuminate the article desired and to keep the lamp in this position. This is particularly true when the lamp is laid on a relatively flat surface which is either horizontal .or slightly inclined as the lamp will, in many cases, tend to roll and thus change position to the extent that the area where the illumination is desired will not receive sufficient illumination.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a lamp guard which is of rugged and simple construction which will remain in the desired position when placed on a flat surface.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a lamp guard having feet or projections to prevent rolling of the guard without adding additional elements to the guard construction or substantially complicating the structure.
A feature of this invention is the provision of a lamp guard formed of heavy wires welded together in which one of the supporting members of the guard includes portions which will prevent the guard from rolling.
A further feature of this invention is the provision of a lamp guard formed of welded wire members including two parts which can be moved relative to each other to permit easy installation of the guard on a lamp and including portions forming feet which prevent the guard from rolling.
Further objects, features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. l is a side view of the lamp guard according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the guard positioned on a flat surface; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the guard of Fig. 1 along the lines 3-3.
In practicing our invention we provide a guard for a portable lamp having longitudinal members shaped to conform generally to the contour of a light bulb with a two part clamp connected to one end of the members and supporting elements connected to the members intermediate the ends to provide a two part cage-like structure. The other ends of the members are connected to an annular plate having openings to receive the members forming a hinge for the two parts of the cage. At least one .of the supporting elements is of generally semi-circular configuration and includes projections which form feet to prevent the guard from rolling when placed on a relatively flat surface.
Referring now to the drawings, in Fig. 1 is shown a socket It for a portable lamp having a guard generally indicated as H secured thereto. The guard includes a plurality of identical longitudinally extending members I2 which are positioned and shaped to conform generally to the contour of a light bulb. For the purpose of securing the guard to the lamp socket, a two part clamp composed of members is and I4 secured together by screws [5 is provided. The portions l3 and Id of the clamp are semi-circular and half of the members I2 are welded to each of the portions as shown in Fig. 3. Supporting elements It and I1 each of which is composed of two parts which are of generally semi-circular or C-shaped configuration are welded to the members l2 intermediate the ends thereof. One part of each element is secured to the members which are welded to one portion of the clamp and the other part of each element is secured to the members welded to the other portion of the clamp, thus providing a cagelike structure having two parts. A small annular plate [8 is provided for connecting together the top ends of the longitudinal members 12. This plate includes a plurality of openings in the periphery thereof for receiving the ends of the members and a central opening to receive the hook l9 which may be used to support the lamp. The members [2 are positioned in the openings in the plate I8 and the ends bent back as shown at 20 in the Figs. 1 and 2. The ends of the members are clamped on the plate tightly enough to provide a rigid structure but with enough play to permit the two parts of the cage to be hinged a small amount at the plate so that the guard can be easily installed on the lamp socket or removed therefrom.
The supporting elements I! are welded to each of the longitudinal members [2 as is shown in Fig. 3 and. each element I! includes two projecting portions 2! which. project beyond the otherwise cylindrical cage-like structure to form feet for supporting the clamp guard. As is apparent from Fig. 3, the projecting portions 2! on the two parts of the supporting elements I1 cooperate to form four equally spaced feet. In Fig. 2, the guard is shown positioned on a table 22 with the projections 2| supporting the guard so that ATENT OFFICE it will remain in position. The feet are spaced at a sufiicient distance that a very stable support is provided so that if the lamp is accidentally moved or jarred it will not continue to roll.
It is apparent from the foregoing description that a lamp guard of simple and rugged construction is provided inoludirigmearis'to prevent the guard from rolling when it has been positioned on a fiat surface. The structure of the guard is not complicated by the non-rolling features as projections are provided as apart of the supporting elements themselves and additional elements or members are .no'tmeqtihiad. :Accordingly, a very simple, effective :and economical structure is provided.
We have described what we consider to be the preferred embodiment of our-invention, however, it is apparent that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
We claim: '1. A guard adapted to be removably secured to a portable rlampfor protecting the bulb thereof comprising "longitudinally extending members positioned and shaped to conform generally to the contour of a light bulb and a pair of C-shaped supporting elements ipositioned perpendicular to said longitudinal members and secured thereto ='in'term'ediate the ends thereof to form a rig-idtwo partcylindricalcage like structure, :said G-shaped elements including zprojecting :portions extending outside 'the cylindrical cage-like structure constituti'ng feet so 'dispo'sed that 'at least two of the feet are effective at all times for supporting said guard and for qarev enting said guard from rolling when placed 'on a flat surface.
2. A guard for *a portable lamp comprising longitudinally extending members positioned and shaped to conform generally to the contour -of a light bulb, a two part "clamp adapted to *support said guard on a portable lamp positioned at one end of said members, a two part supporting element positioned perpendicular to said members intermediate the ends thereof, half of said members being welded to one part of said clamp and one part of said element and the remainder of said members being welded to the other part of said clamp and the other part of said element thereby forming a two part cage-like structure, an annular plate having openings therein in which the ends of said members opposite to said "one end are positioned and secured to permit limited hinged movement between the two parts *oflsaid structure-so that said guard may be placed about said lamp, each of the parts of said supporting element being of generally C-shaped configuration and including two projecting portions thereon which extend outside said cage so that when said guard is placed about said lamp, four symmetrically positioned feet are provided on said guard tosupport said guard in any one of 'four positions and to prevent rolling of said guard.
