Description

2 1949. PARANSKY 2,469,175
MATTRES S Filed NOV. 28, 1944 I m'en for) A Home Patented May 3, 1949 UNITED -'-S'TAT%ES MATTRESS gLou is Paransky,;Pittsbnrgh, Pa, assignor to The Star Bedding 60., a partnership 1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in mattresses of the innerspring type and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character embodying a novel method of securing the springs in the ticking in a manner to permit full action of said springs.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved inner-spring mattress of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, comfortable, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing, and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a. mattress constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a ticking of suitable material which is designated generally by reference character I. The ticking I includes top and bottom sheets 2 and 3, respectively, and side walls 4. Stitched to the top and bottom sheets 2 and 3 in the ticking l are spaced, parallel reinforcing strips 5.
Vertical coil springs 6 are mounted in the ticking l. The springs 6, it will be observed, are arranged in transverse and longitudinal rows or series between the upper and lower reinforcing strips 5. Each row of springs 8 is secured in position in the ticking l by tapes or ropes 1.
Two of the ropes I are connected at their ends and the knot 8 is pulled into the ticking I through one of the side walls 4 thereof in a manner to provide a loop 9, as illustrated to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawing. The ropes 1 extending from the ends of loop 9 are then wrapped around an intermediate coil of the immediately adjacent spring B, as at H), and the opposite ends carried upwardly and downwardly respectively in said springs. The two ends of ropes l are then looped twice through the top and bottom sheets 2 and 3 of the ticking I, one end through the top sheet and the other end through the bottom sheet and the adjacent reinforcing strips 5, as at l I. Then, the cords 'l are looped at I2 each around the adjacent ends of the coil springs 8. The ropes l are then carried longitudinally to the next springs 6 where they are again looped through the members 2, 3 and 5. Each successive spring is bound to the top and bottom sheet by loop i2 as above described until the end spring of a longitudinal row is reached whereupon the ends of the cord are brought to an intermediate coil of this spring and looped thereabout and brought through the adjacent end wall and tied to form an end loop as at 9. The above described process is repeated row by row until all the springs are securely bound to the ticking.
It will thus be seen that a construction and arrangement has been provided whereby the coil springs 6 are fioatingly suspended in the ticking l in a manner to allow full action of said springs, If desirable or necessary, the coil springs 6 may be laterally tied or connected together in any suitable manner. The usual padding l5 of cotton or other suitable material is provided between the coil springs 6 and the top and bottom sheets 2 and 3, respectively, of the ticking I.
It is believed that the many advantages of a mattress constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A mattress comprising a ticking including top and bottom sheets, end and side walls, longitudinally extending reinforcing strips stitched to the top and bottom sheets of. said ticking, coil springs arranged in transverse and longitudinally ex tending rows and mounted vertically in the ticking between the upper and lower reinforcing strips, pairs of ropes connecting each row of springs to the top and bottom sheets of said ticking, one end of one of each pair of ropes passing through an end wall and secured to the end of the other of the pair of ropes, and said ropes looped around intermediate .coils of the springs adjacent one wall, one of said ropes then passing upwardly and the other downwardly in said adjacent coil springs, each looped through the sheets and the reinforcing strips, said ropes then looped around the adjacent end coils of the springs and then passed to the next adjacent 3 longitudinally aligned springs and secured thereto by being looped through the adjacent sheets and reinforcing strip and about the adjacent upper and lower coils of the last-mentioned spring, said ropes then successively secured in a like manner to each spring in a longitudinal row to the last one adjacent the end wall opposite said one end wall, said last springs having the ropes then looped around intermediate :coils thereof and said opposite end wall having the opposite end of the one of each pair of ropes passed therethrough and fixed to the opposite end of the end of the other of the pair of ropes.
