SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,709, dated August 16, 1881.

"combination of certain devices, as hereinafter described and claimed, and as isvmore fully described in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bed-bottom. Fig. 2 shows a transverse section. Fig. 8 is a detail of construction which I do not claim as my invention.
I make three or more transverse bed-pieces or slats, A, upon which are secured the spiral springs O, as shown. On the ends of these slats are formed tenons a, which fit into mortises b in the side braces, 13, as shown. The longitudinal spring-slats D are all connected by strips of webbing E, this webbing being outside the slats, and being secured also to the side braces, B, by tacking or any other wellknown means, as shown, the webbing crossin g above each row of springs. The webbing may be all in a single piece, if preferred. At intervals on the longitudinal slats are placed the hooks d, which consist of a piece of wire crossing the slat on the upper side and bent down with a hook at each end, as shown. The end of each spring 0 is turned up to form a hook, 0, also.

When it is desired to take the bed down for removal the mortiscd side braces are withdrawn from the tenoned bottom pieces on each side. Then the springs are sprung out of the hooks on the longitudinal slats. Each bottom strip or spring-board then carries a row of springs, and these strips may be laid close to gether. The longitudinal slats with the side braces and webbing are then rolled up in a cylindrical bundle around the spring-boards, the whole occupying very little space.
This bed maybe taken apart and setup again with great facility, occupying verylittle room when packed for transportation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improvement in bed-bottoms consisting of three or more removable spring-boards, A, with their tenons a and springs O, the mortised side braces, 13, and webbing E, in combination with the longitudinal slats D, the spring connectinghOOliS d, whereby the bed-bottom and side bars are united by a continuous web, and the bed-bottom adapted to be taken apart for purposes of transportation, substantially as and for the purpose herein described. 7
