SPRING-BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,208, dated. December 28, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK H. I-IERTEEIOH, of the city and county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in S prin g-Beds, fully set forth and described in the following specification, taken in connection with the drawin gs,which form a part thereof, and in which- Figure 1 represents in perspective a portion of a bedstead and spring-bed embodying my invention. side elevation of one of the hooks, the bedstead and bottom being shown partly in section. Fig. 3 represents a plan View of the bottom of the bed suspended on the bedstead.

In all figures similar letters of reference represent like parts.

This invention relates to spring-beds, and has for its obj ect the construction of a spiralspring bed adapted to be carried directly by the bedstead without the necessity of slats or other additional devices.

The invention is herein shown applied to a spring-bed the bottom of which is formed of crossing diagonal strips of metal, forming what may be termed a lazy-tong structure, so that the whole may be contracted or eX panded, as desired; but it is not confined or limited thereto.

In the drawings the letter A represents the head, and B the foot, of an iron bedstead, while C points out the two sides thereof. The bottom of the spring-bed is formed of twosets of parallel strips of metal a and 1), running diagonally in transverse directions, crossing each other, and secured together at the points 0. On the upper set of strips a, midway between the points of juncture c, are mounted upright spirals or springs D, secured to the bottom in any suitable manner. and b are joined, are also secured S-shaped hooks E, the lower horizontal portions of which, e, are pivotally attached to the strips or and b to swing in a horizontal plane. The upper horizontal portions 6 of the hooks E are adapted to rest on the sides C of the bedstead or on the head A and foot B. The hooks are provided on their inner faces with eyes 6 to which the spiral springs E are attached by chains d to unite the parts and hold the springs firmly in position. By this means when the hooks are attached to and depend from the bedstead the bottom of the spring-bed will hang between the bedstead, the tops of the spring D being about even with the tops of the hooks E.

The strips of metal a, and b may be formed of any suitable shape, such as fiat, arched, or rounded strips.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with a bed-frame, of a bedbottom consisting of a series of diagonal cross-bars arranged in sets, those of one set being parallel and crossing those of the other set and pivotally connected at their crossing portions, the inner bars extending across the frame, supporting-hooks at the endsof the bars having horizontal lower ends pivotally secured to the bars,and spiral springs secured individually to the bars.
