(Cl. 248 -226) This invention relates broadly to lamps such as work lamps, desk lamps and others adapted to be placed upon a horizontal surface, and more particularly to means mounted upon the underside of such lamps, whereby they may be rigidly and removably retained upon vertical surfaces, rendering such lamps universally useable.

It is a further aim of the present invention to provide a work lamp with clamp means, whereby such lamp may be secured to a bed frame, bed,

post, pipe, table edge, and any other desirable surface, whether vertical or angular.

And it is yet another purpose of the present invention to provide a clamp by means of which an object on which it is secured, may be removably secured to a vertical, horizontal or angular support.

And still another advantage of the .present invention resides in the provision of a clamp for attachment to a lamp or any other desirable object, whereby the object may be rigidly and securely attached to a rectangular support, such as a bed frame, or a circular support such as a pipe.

And yet another feature of the present invention resides in the provision of clamp means for lamps and other objects, whereby the said objects may be removably secured to vertical or angular surfaces without the use of screws, bolts or other tightening means.

These and other meritorious objects and advantages, which will become more fully apparent as the description hereof proceeds, are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of few and simple parts, hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a material component of this disclosure, and in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan View of a desk lamp, the underside of which is provided with a clamp made in accordance with the present invention.

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the lamp illustrated in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the lamp, showing the clamp in an inoperative position.

Figure 4 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of the lamp, the section being taken on line 44 of Figure 1, and

Figure 5 is a side elevational view, similar to Figure 4, but showing the clamp in operative position about a tubular support.

Referring in greater detail to the drawing, the numeral I0 designates in general a lamp, such as a desk lamp, work lamp, etc., having a base II, here illustrated as having the shape of a flat-iron, one end of which is relatively broad, whereas the other end is pointed. Near the broad end, a socket I2 is provided, preferably mounted in a swivel member I3. An appropriate opening may be provided near the rear of the base I l for the electrical cable I4 therethrough, which cable may thence pass through the central opening in the roof of base II into the socket I2 in the conven tional manner and for the usual purpose. None of these elements are new, hence they do not form part of this invention.

It has heretofore been mentioned that base I i, at substantially its highest point, is provided with an opening which, for the purpose of this particular embodiment is circular in cross-section, but which obviously may be of any desired shape. The neck of swivel member I3 extends through this opening upwardly, and the end of the said neck is secured to the inner surface of the roof of base II by eyelet I5. Eyelet I5 also secures to the underside of the roof of base II a pair of brackets I6 and H, the said brackets being arranged cross-wise as is illustrated in the drawing, arm I6 extending throughout-the width of base II and arm I! extending lengthwise, as Figure 3 clearly shows. The said arms are curved to conform substantially with the contour of the interior of the base I I, and the ends of the brackets may be provided with rubber tips I8 projecting from base line I9, so that the device may rest upon these tips when it is placed upon a desk, table or the like surface. Each end of arm or bracket I6 is provided with an opening, in which is swingingly retained one end of an arm 20. At its center, arm 2!) is curved to form off-set 22.

The invention further comprises another arm 23, the ends of which embrace arm 20 at points near offset 22, so that a swinging arrangement is achieved for arm 23. This arm is also provided with an offset, referred to by the numeral 24, and a pair of springs 25, secured between arms 20 and 23, have for their purpose to normally press both arms against the front portion of bracket It. For the purpose of illustration, Figure 5 shows the device secured to a cylindrical support 26 and the device is provided with an incandescent lamp bulb 21.

The operation of the device is very simple and highly effective. When it is desired to place the lamp upon a table, desk or such support, it will come to rest upon tips I8. These tips have rubber covering, in order that the surface of the support may not be marred. It is not necessary of course, to cause these tips to extend beyond base line iii, in which the device will rest upon the edge of base I I. When it is desired to secure the device to another support, such as the cylindrical support 26 shown in Figure 5, arm 23 is swung backward against the pressure of springs 25 and thence pulled upwardly and forwardly, and released about the support which it is intended to grip. There the device will be held rigidly and securely. The support may be of any shape and any diameter. Arm 23 may have a rubber coveringso that thesurface of;the support may not be marred.

While for purposes of illustration, a lamp has been referred to in this disclosure, it is clear that the clamp arrangement may be used with equal efiectiveness in connection with other devices.

Having thus described the inventionfwhat is claimed as new and desired to securebyLetters Patent, is:

1. A clamp securable to the roof of a foot member, said clamp comprising a pair. of: brackets,

said brackets positioned rectangularly in relation ing arm provided-with an offset, and spring means normally urging said second rocking arm against the other of said'brackets.

3.- A clamp comprising a pair of cross-wise disposed brackets, saidbrackets joined at their center, each end ofsaid brackets terminating in a raised tip, a spring-said spring curved to form a'rocking arm, said spring anchored-at its ends at the opposed tips of one of saidbrackets, said spring forming an offset at its-center, a-second spring curved to form a second rocking arm, and spring means joining said first rocking arm and said second rocking arm, normally urging them against the other of'said brackets.
