e 1o1aim. (C1. 24a-317) This invention relates to newfand useful improvements and structural refnementsinfh'an'gers, more specifically, to hangers such as may be effectively and conveniently employed for the supporting or attachment of fluorescent tubing from ceilings.

Hangers heretofore employed for this purpose usually consist of an arm adapted at one end thereof for attachment to the ceiling, while its remaining end is formed with a forked extremity7 so to speak, between the arms of which, more accurately, under the arms of which, the fluorescent tubing is positioned. Said tubing is usually retained in position by being secured to the fork by a length of wire, and it is apparent that the installation of such tubing is a dicult task, inasmuch as one person is required to support the tubing in position, while another person is usually necessary to apply the wire for securing the tub-v ing in place.

It is therefore the principal object of the present invention to eliminate the disadvantage above set forth by providing a hanger in which the tubing may be installed by one person, such installation being accomplished with the minimum of effort and the maximum of convenience.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hanger which is flexible in structure, so to speak, in order that it may readily adjust itself to the tubing, where continuous tubing of considerable length is being installed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger which may be readily secured to the ceiling.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a hanger which is simple in construction and which can not easily become damaged.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a hanger which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specication proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention illustrating the tubing in situ therein, and

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the invention per se, showing the same partly broken away to reveal its construction.

Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention embodies in its construction a flange designated generally by the reference character 5, .the same being conlg'urated substantially as shown in thedrawing and provided with a plurality of apertures, whereby it may be conveniently secured by means of suitable bolts 6 to the ceiling 'I.

The flange 5 is centrally depressed as at 8 to provide a socket 9, the bottom of the depression 8 forming an aperture IIJ in communication with the socket.

An arm II is provided at one end thereof with an integral ball I2, this ball being receivable in the socket 9, with the arm II protruding outwardly through the aperture I0. It will be apparent that in this manner, a swivel connection, so to speak, is obtained between the arm II and the flange 5.

The remaining end of the arm II is arcuated to constitute what may be referred to as a hook I3, this in turn terminating in an outturned detent I4.

A set-screw l5 is provided in the body of the depression 8 of the aforementioned flange 5, the

shank of said screw being engageable with the ball l2. The purpose of this screw' will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

When the invention is placed in use, the fiange 5 is secured to the ceiling 'I by the bolts I3 as aforesaid, and the fluorescent tubing I6 is receivable in the hook I3 as is best illustrated in the accompanying Figure 1. It should be understood that a plurality of hangers are, of course, employed for supporting tubing of given lengths, said hangers being arranged in a substantially longitudinally aligned relationship and spaced at required intervals, in accordance with the nature of the installation being made.

It will be apparent that by virtue of the swivel connection between the arms I I and the anges 5, the hooks will readily adjust themselves, so to speak, to the tubing, and the tubing may be placed in the hooks and be supported thereby without manual effort being required to retain the same in position while the securing thereof is effected.

This securing is accomplished by simply passing a loop formed by a length of wire I l, over the opening of the hook I3, and by engaging said loop of wire with the detent I4. It will be apparent that in this manner, the tubing I6 will be effectively retained in the hooks I3.

When the tubing has thus been secured, the arms I I may be permanently fastened by simply tightening the set screws I5, thus preventing fur` 3 ther swivelingv movement of the balls sockets ili It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is considered unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes n the details of construction, combination and arrangement of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim as my invention is:

A hanger for fluorescent tubing", comprising an annular base plate removably secured to a sup porting structure, an outwardly projecting central hub portion integrally formed with said base plate, an opening provided in said plate, a ball seatprovicled inisaid -hub portion communicating with lsaid opening, a shank: receiving aperture provided-in `said 'hub portion communicating with said -ball seat, a shank, a rspherical element car- Z in the ried by one terminal of said shank rotatably engaging said ball seat, a hook member at the opposite terminal of said shank, an outwardly turned, arcuate lip at the outer extremity of said hook member, a exble element carried by said shank engaging said lip for closing the opening of said hook, and an adjustable set screw carried by said hub portion selectively engaging said spherical element.
