1 This invention relates to closures for the mouth of receptacles and particularly to the so-called crown" type caps for bottles, and the primary aim is the provision of a closure assembly having,
parts for removing the closure from the receptacle without the employment of any tool or implement separate from that forming a part of the closure per se.
The term crown cap as used throughout this specification is understood to mean a stopper or closure for bottles' having relative small open mouth, the closure being made from tinned iron or other suitable material, provided with acorrugated edge or annular skirt that is crimped over the mouth oi the bottle in a manner well known in the art, and taking the form that is readily understood by the public generally.
It is well-known that crown caps for bottles are clamped in place to seal the mouth of the bottle against the escape of the carbonated contents, and due to the pressure exerted within the bottle. the cap must be tightly secured against accidental displacement at all times.
One of the more important aims of this invention is the provision of a bottle closure having the conventional cover and a exible element associated with the cover that may be grasped by the user and employed as means for disp-lacing the cover when the bottle is to be opened.
More speeically, this invention provides a bottle cap remover in the nature oi a exible element extending from beneath the crown cap and presenting at the extended portion, a grip through the medium whereof the skirt of the' cover portion of the crown cap may be pried from its gripping relation and therefore, cause the entire closure to loosen.
A further aim oi this invention is to provide a new article of manufacture in the nature of a combined gasket and grip that are associated with the cover portion of a'crow'n cap in a manner to effectively seal the mouthof the bottle and at the same time present structure to the user that may be employed for quickly pulling the cap from its operative position.
Other aims of the instant invention include the specific manner of forming the crown cap puller and the manner in which the puller is` associated with conventional elements of the well-known crown cap-all of such specific aims will become apparent during the course of the following specification, referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a stretch-out plan view of the blank or article of manufacture, which comprises the 2 gasket and pulling grip for the cover portion of a crown cap; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional -View through a bottle closure, having as a portion thereof, the part illustrated in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 2, the closure is in the form of a conventional crown cap, having a cover portion v58 from which depends a laterally extending skirt 5E that clamplngly engages the sides of a bottle 6I) when the parts are in the operative position. As is well-known, skirt 56 is crimped through the employment of a die and forced tightly against the bottle near the mouth thereof.
The cork gasket which has heretofore been employed in the production of crown caps has substituted therefor a strip of iiexible material formed as clearly illustrated in Fig, 1.
The blank illustrated in Fig. 1. comprises grip 50, gasket portion 52, and a tongue 54 that is anchored between the skirt 56 of the cap and the outer surface of the bottle 6l) when the blank is in operative position to seal bottle 6U.
The diameter of gasket portion 52 is substantially the same as the inside diameter of skirt 56, and tongue 54 is drawnl to place when the bottle 60 ls capped. Tongue 54 is diametrically opposed to grip 50 and the intermediate or neck portion 62 of grip 50 extends between skirt 56 and bottle 60 at a point where lifting the cap will be easy, due to the leverage afforded and the holding action at tongue 54. A quick upward jerk on the part of the operator. after he has grasped grip 5l);g will suddenly dislodge the cap from a sealing position. Obviously, when" the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 2, gasket portion 52 will thoroughly seal the mouth of bottle B0. t
When the grip is positioned as just described, it will be readily accessible to the user but will not interfere with the loading of the bottles in a case or into a cooling compartment of a refrigerator or vending machine. i
The material from which this pulling member is constructed, may be Woven fiber glass or any other suitable substance, that will be streng without presenting bulk. It may be secured in place by the glue which is usually used in fastening a gasket to the inner face of cover portion 58.`
The looped form of grip 50 presents means for engaging a hook', nail or other rigid projection when grasping the body of the bottle-thus, if the operator isunable 'to exert enough pull upon the grip, the necessary force mayI be applied by looping the same over such a projection to facilitate the action necessary to remove the cap.
Grip 59 is yfurther usable as means for lifting l the bottles from a cooler where the necksof lthe Y bottles are normally exposed. The looped form of grip 50 permits threading a cord or wiretherethrough to serve as means for carrying a number 'of bottles Vin grouped condition. 'I'he weight oi.'
