2 Claims.
The present invention relates to packages and, while particularly embodying wide mouth containers, is useful for receptacles having pouring and lling openings of varying diameters. The container is adapted to hold and preserve contents of a fluid or pasty nature such as paints and lacquers, chemicals, syrups and soups, as well as solid or dry materials. Preferably th package is formed of sheet metal.
The receptacle of the present invention comprises two parts, namely a body including an integral bottom at one end and at the other end an integral sealing lip and locking shoulder for receivingr a lid, all formed from a single piece of material; the second element of the container, namely the lid or cap, is likewise formed from a single piece of material, and said body is formed with a shoulder adapted to act as a pry-off shoulder for removing the cap from the body.
The container presents a relatively unobstructed pouring opening which is highly important in that there is but negligible opportunity for the collection of the contents at the mouth of the container and the pouring is uniform until all of 4the contents have been removed.
In addition, a very effective seal is provided in that the cap has a peripheral sealing groove receiving the sealing lip of the container and a gasket material may be interposed between the two; also the walls of the sealing groove resiliently engage the sealing lip to assure a permanent and effective seal. Furthermore, the skirt of the cap is pressed in at spaced points after the cap is forced into position upon the body and these projections or lugs engage a shoulder formed by a locking groove in the container body, whereby the cap is firmly held in sealing relation to the container by a substantial downward sealing pressure, but may be easily released and reapplied where necessary. i
The container itself is free of seams or joints and with the cap, may be easily and cheaply formed by means of automatic metal pressing machinery. 1

Referring to Figurel, the container which is made of metal is indicated as a whole at I0 and includes the cylindrical body II having the in tegral bottom I2 extending above the plane of the bottom edge I3 of the body as shown in Figure 2. This construction is formed by bending the metal of the bottom adjacent its periphery upwardly, as shown.
As shown best in Figure 3 and somewhat exaggerated as to size, at its upper endthe body II is of reduced diameter, as at I4, the metal being drawn inwardly as at I5 forming a lid pryoff shoulderl and a groove I6 having a locking shoulder I'I produced at the base of the reduced portion. The free edge of the reduced portion is curled inwardlyto form a bead I8 which is preferably hollow and `closed as at I9 and forms a sealing lip 20. It will be noted that the body, J
including the bottom and cap receiving portion,
is formed from a single piece of metal and is de vod of seams or joints.
Referring to Figure 2, where the container is drawn to substantially the exact size, it will be noted that the pouring mouth is unobstructed, the bead `I8 substantially merging with the wall of the body, as distinguished from the usual metal container where the body has a horizontal inwardly extending flange, the latter acting to retard uniform flow, as well as causng the contents to collect around the mouth.
The lid or cap 2| is devoid of seams or joints, being formed of a single piece of metal, and has a flat top. At its periphery, the metal of the cap is bent downwardly, as shown at 22, and a sealing' groove is formed by bending the metal upwardly as at 23 and over to produce the integral skirt 24. There is defined between the wall 23 and skirt 24 a groove for receiving the sealing bead I8 which s reslliently gripped between the wall 23 on one side in metal to metal contact, as shown, and the skirt 24 on the other, the skirt, as shown, engaging in metal to metal contact, a longitudinal area of the reduced neck portion I4 of the body. This assures a very satisfactoryy seal, since the lid and body being formed of thin, somewhat springy, metal, the substantally dia.- metrical engagement of the walls of the sealing groove with the bead is resilient. The lower edge of the skirt is preferably curled outwardly into a. hollow rolled edge 26, as shown.
By reason of the construction of the sealing groove 23--24 and locking bead I8 whichis received within the same, it is possible to interpose a gasket material 21, thereby additionally enhancing the seal, and this sealing material may be coated upon the interior of the groove in the cap or upon the bead I8 or may be separate therefrom.
In forming a sealed package, the cap is forced down over the bead, causing frictional sealing contact on opposite sides of said bead, and is pressed down suiiiciently to compress elastic sealing medium 21, While so held under compression, portions of the rolled edge 26 are pressed in, as shown at 28, at spaced points to form lugs which lock the cap securely in position. In removing the cover it is necessary to insert a tool under each lug, and using prying shoulder I5 as a fulcrum, bend the lugs back to clear wa1l|4 and then further pry the cap off bead I8. After thus opening the can, the cap is still useful as a frictional seal around walls 23 and 24. Of course,

to again lock it securely. The cap does not extend axially beyond the body of the package as shown in Figure 3 and hence does not constitute an obstruction, so there is no danger that it may accidentally be engaged and loosened or priedv off.
In Figure 4, the bottom is likewise integral with the body, but the metal thereof is bent upwardly; as shown at 2S, and then reversely bent downwardly to a lesser extent, as shown at 30, such construction acting to rigidify the container for certain uses.
As will be appreciated, we have constructed a metal container of two parts, namely the onepiece body and one-piece lid or cap, each devoid of` seams er joints; unobstructed and uniform flow and complete emptying of the contents is made possible, and at the same time a very high seal is permanently obtainable, the cap or lid,
however, being easily removable and reusable without destructive distortion of the body or cap. It is further to be noted that when the cap is applied, its skirt and bead lie within the confines l of the body and do not project outwardly to present an obstacle such as might cause the cap to be jarred off in handling or the package damaged.
Various changes and modifications may be made in the construction, all of which are cornprehended in the appended claims.

A container having a body and a neck of reduced diameter, the base of the neck being bent inwardly to form a locking groove for receiving a bead formed in the free end of a cap skirt, the neck having its free upper end turned inwardly into a completely closed hollow resilient bead defining the mouth of the container and adapted to be received in a locking groove in the cap, and a cap having a locking groove provided with a curved bottom and defined thereby and by the cap skirt and a downwardly extending wall formed by a recess in the top of the cap, the cap skirt and said wall being continuous with the curved bottom of the groove, the walls of the groove so formed being resilient and resiliently gripping the bead withthe Wall of recess engaging the bead tangentially, there being a space between the top of the sealing bead and the bottom of the locking groove to receive a packing, a packing inserted in saidv space, the inner surface of said skirt engaging the outer surface of the neck substantially coextensive with the wall thereof from said point of engagement with the bead to the point of engagement of the bead on the cap skirt in the locking groove'of the neck, the lower wall of the locking groove in the neck forming a pryoif shoulder for releasing the cap from its resilient locking engagement, the cap skirt when in position lying within the confines of a projection of the container lbody wall with the bead on the skirt locked in resilient engagement in the locking groove of the neck. h

A container having a body and a neck of reduced diameter, the base of the neck being bent inwardly to form a locking groove for receiving a bead formed in the free end of a cap skirt, the neck having its free upper end turned inwardly into a completely closed hollow resilient bead defining the mouth of the container and adapted to be received in a locking groove in the cap, and a cap having a locking groove provided with a curved bottom and defined thereby and by the cap skirt and a downwardly extending wall formed by a recess in the top of the cap, the cap skirt and said wall being continuous with the curved bottom of the groove, the walls of the groove so formed being resilient and resiliently gripping the bead with the Wall of recess engaging the bead tangentially, there being a space between the top of the sealing bead and the bottom of the locking groove to receive a packing, a packing inserted in said space, the inner surface of said skirt engaging the outer surface of the neck substantially coextensive with the wall thereof from said point of engagement with the bead to the point of engagement of the bead on the cap skirt in the locking groove of the neck, the lower wall of the locking groove in the neck forming a pry-off shoulder for releasing the cap from its resilient locking engagement, the cap skirt when in position lying within the confines of a projection of the container body wall with the bead on the skirt locked in resilient engagement in the locking groove of the neck, said bead on the cap skirt being pressed inwardly at spaced points to form lugs engaging in the locking groove of the neck. n
