2 Claims. I (Cl. 116-114) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety devices for motorists and the primary feature of the present invention is to provide a device adapted to prevent a motorist from fallingto sleep behind the steering wheel and hence causing an accident,

Another importantfeature of thepresent invention is to provide an adjustable neck band and means carried by the band for supporting a pointed hook which is adapted for positioning below the chin of the wearer and will prick into the chinof the wearer if he becomes sleepy while driving and lowers his chin,

A further feature of this invention is to provide a device of the character referred to including a protective cover for said pointed hook which when applied prevents the pointed end of said hook from engaging clothing or the like when the device is not in position for use.

A still further feature of the present invention is to provide a device of the class described that is simple and practical in construction, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the safety device attached to a motorist ready for use;

Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the pointed end of said device with parts of the protective knob broken away and shown in section;

Figure 3 is a similar view of Figure 2 the protective knob inverted in a safe position, and

Figure 4 is a rear elevational view of the supporting means for the pointed hook with the adjustable neck band shown in part.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention the numeral 5 represents a substantially triangular plate having an eye 6 in one upper corner which is adapted to receive one end I of a neck band B. A slot 9 provided in the opposite upper corner is adapted to receive a loop I0 formed in the free end of said band.

In order to make the device safe for shipment or storing the knob is inverted as shown in Figure 3 whereby the pointed end M of said hook is tightly held in the narrow end of said knob without projecting therefrom.

The device is applied to th motorist as shown in Figure 1 with the pointed end 14 resting directly under his chin so that if he becomes sleepy, his chin will fall downwardly on said pointed end and awaken him quickly thus preventing an accident.

In view of the foregoing descriptiontaken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this 'art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a presusceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended cla ms,

What I claim is:

l. A device of the class described comprising a pin pointed at its upper end, a supporting plate connected to the lower end of said'pin, a neck band carried by the plate for holding the plate in position in front of the wearers neck, and a knob having a bore flared toward. one end removably carried by the pointed end of said pin, said pointed end projecting slightly outward from said knob when in one position and said knob being invertible to encase said pointed end when the device is not in use.

2. A device of the class described comprising a substantially triangular shaped supporting plate, a vertically positioned pin pointed at its upper end which is adapted to rest beneath the chin of a motorist, the lower end of said pin terminating in a hook which is connected to the lower end of said plate, a neck band permanently connected to one upper corner of said plate and removably secured to another upper corner of said plate. and a knob having a tapered bore removably car- .ried by the pointed end of said pin, said pointed end projecting slightly outward from said knob when in one position and said knob being inverted to encase said pointed end when the device is not in use.
