Patented Aug. 17, 1948 CORNERPIECE STRUCTURE Walter M. Krantz, Youngstown, Ohio, assignor,
by direct and mesne assignments, to Ace Storm Window Company, Youngstown, Ohio, a cor-;
poration of Ohio Application August 1, 1945, Serial 3 Claims. ((31.189-36) This-invention relates toa corner piece structure and more particularly to a corner piece structure suitable for use in the formation of metallic frames such as employed in the formation of storm windows.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a corner piece structure suitable for joining metallic structures to one another to form a built up metallic frame as, for example, of a storm window.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a corner piece structure capable of aligning pieces of framing material being attached to one another.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a corner piece structure utilizing a single channeled corner piece for affixin cut sections of a framing material to one another.
The corner structure shown and described herein has been devised to facilitate the rapid and inexpensive formation of metallic frame structures such as may be advantageously employed in the formation of metallic storm sash. It is well known that storm sash are commonly custom built for various sized window openings as found in dwellings and other buildings, and that in forming a storm sash of metal framing pieces it is essential that a simple and efficient corner structure be utilized. The present disclosure relates to a corner piece structure which may be used in combination with appropriately cut sections of suitably formed framing material.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the
invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view with parts broken away and parts in cross section illustrating the corner piece structure.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional elevation taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective elevation of the corner piece employed in the structure shown in Figures 1 and 2.
By referring to the drawings and Figures 1 and 2 in particular in will be seen that a pair of abutting end sections of a metallic shape l0 have been joined to one another by means of a corner 7 I 2 1 piece ll which is, as may be seen by referring "to Figure 3; an L-shaped die cast piece provided with a T-shaped channel. l2 formed-therein. By again referring to Figures 1 and 2 it will be observed that the corner piece I l is adapted for use in uniting appropriately cut end sections of the metal shape lo, the same consisting of a body having a surface flange l3 formed by a pair of oppositely disposed axially extending flanges I4 and having a centrally disposed axially extending rib I5, the uppermost end of which is provided with a T-head shape consisting of projections I6 and IBA, respectively.
By referring to Figure 2 of the drawings is will be seen that dovetailed channels I! and "A are formed continuously in either side of the upstanding rib 15. The corner piece II, as disclosed in detail in Figure 3 and heretofore described as havin a T-shaped channel formed therein, will be seen to be of a size and shape enabling cut end sections of the shape ID to be joined thereto by the insertion of the end sections of the upstanding rib I5 into the T-shaped channel I2 of the corner piece I I. It will be observed that the side sections of the corner piece H forming the T-shaped channel l2 are shaped to register with the dovetailed channels I! and HA formed continuously on the sides of the upstanding rib 15 of the metal shape Ill. The side sections of the corner piece II are formed with oppositely disposed facing dovetail shaped projections l8 which, in effect, form the T-shaped channel It. It will also be observed that this formation results in a pair of angular ribs along the bottom of the corner piece ll. When two sections of metal framing shape, such as indicated by the numeral ill in Figure 1, are cut at a forty-five degree angle, as indicated by the numeral 19 in Figure 1, and placed into end engagement with one another With the upstanding ribs I5 thereof in engagement with the T -shaped channel I2 of the corner piece II, a resulting corner piece structure is obtained which is neat in appearance and extremely effective in holding the framing members 10 in assembled position.
It will thus be seen that a simple and eflicient corner piece structure has been disclosed which will enable pairs of suitable framing members to be joined to form a frame of the desired shape and size for the formation of a storm window frame. It will also be seen that the frame formed through the use of the corner piece structure is extremely rigid and entirely capable of retaining its shape without warping or misalignment as the dual action of the corner piece II is engaging the upstanding rib 12 of the framing member applies tension along both sides of the upstandin rib as well as on the uppermost surface thereof and at the same time engages on a substantial area the back of the surface flange I3. The resulting corner structure i thereby tightly formed and capable of retaining its framed shape indefinitely.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A corner piece structure comprising in combination a shape having an axially extending rib, the said rib having undercut channels formed on either side thereof and an L-shaped corner piece having a channel formed therein registering with the said axially extending rib of the said shape.
2. A corner piece structure comprising in cornbination a shape having an axially extending rib, the said rib having dovetailed channels formed continuously on either side thereof and an L- shaped corner piece having a channel formed therein registering with the said axially extendiing rib. of the said shape.
3. A corner piece structure comprising in combination a shape having an axially extending rib and an unbroken surface flange, the said rib being T-shaped in cross section, a pair of axially extending V shaped grooves formed in the said flange adjacent the base of the said rib, and an L-shaped corner piece having a channel formed therein registering with the said axially extending rib of the said shape and having sharp depending ridges registering with the said axially extending V shaped grooves.
