BOOK REST..

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOEL SWARTZ, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
Bo'oK-REs-r.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,406, dated July 19, 1881.
' Applicationfiled January 20, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OEL SWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Camden, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-Bests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in book-rests; and it consists in certain details 'in the construction and arrangement of the difierent parts, as will be more fully explained,
and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a perspective view of my device with the leaves extended.
A represents a base of any suitable design,
into which is secured the upright hollow standard B, extending up any suitable distance, and adapted to receive and retain the adjustable sliding rod 0 by means of the thumb-screw a,
secured in said hollow standard 13, and projecting through and abutting against the sliding rod 0. This adjustable sliding rod is adapted to support one or more revolving tables or rests, and each table or restis provided with 2 5 as many leaves as desired. In the present instance I have shown two tables, and each table having four leaves, said tables and leaves being adjustable to any height and inclination to suit the user. The table D is elevated by 0 the sleeve K, havin g a shoulder thereon, which bears against a disk secured to the under side of the table, the upper end ofthe sleeve passing through the central opening and resting flush with the upper surface of the table; or,
3 5 ,instead of having the sleeve pass through the table, the upper end may bear directly against the disk secured thereon, which will accomplish the same result. The opening in the sleeve K is just sufficient to allow the same 40 to slide freely on the adjustable sliding rod, which gives to the table a firm support and prevents all tilting movement, audit also holds the table at any desired height by means of the thumb-screw which passes through the sleeve K and abuts against the adjustable sliding rod. 1
G is the sliding holder, having the arms I pivoted thereto, said arms extending up and secured at their opposite end to the under side of the table-leaves D, about midway their length. The sliding holder is also provided with a thumb-screw for holding the leaves extended. The leaves are pivoted to the table-body by any suitable hinges, and may have spring-fingers H attached thereto for holding books upon the leaves in an open position.
The table D is similar in construction as the table D with the exception that there is no opening in the top for the passage of the adjustable guide-rod.
The tables above described are capable of any desired adjustment and their leaves of any needed inclination, and each table may be revolved independently of the other upon the adjustable guide-rod.
Instead of using two tables, as shown in the drawings, the standard and adjustable guiderod can be made to accommodate only one table; or, if desired, the top table can be taken 011' and the lower one adjusted to any desired height.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A book-rest consisting, essentially, in the combination, with the supportin g-base and hollow standard, of a vertically-adjustable rod,
'0, inserted in the hollow standard, a sleeve,
K, placed upon the upper end of rod O, and a central table, D connected to said sleeve, leaves D, hinged to table D", adjustable collar or sleeve Gr, and arms I, hinged at their opposite ends to the collar G and leaves D, substantially as set forth.
