I Application February 13, 1945,.Seria 1-No; 5775681) This invention relates to covers or caps for jars or other containers, and more particularly containers for cosmetics used in toilet kits around vanities" and the like, wheretl'ie containers and other articles used-not only are useful but are likewise attr'activei-n appearance.

In applying cosmetics considerable time is consumed in removing and replacing the caps of the jars or containers and therefore it is not possible to use a number of preparations contained in the conventional jars or containers having caps which ordinarily screw on without consuming a substantial amount of time, it being desirable to perform-certainroutine operations in accordancewith'custom in completing the toilet.

It is an object of the invention to provide an attractive and ornamental cap or cover for a jar or other container which can be easily and simply removed and replaced without particular skill or the use of two hands, in order that the contents of the jars may be instantly available.

A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of the above character of simple and inexpensive construction and which can be interchangeably used on a plurality of jars or containers so that when the contents of one jar is used the cap may be placed on another full i A further object of the invention is to provide a cap or cover of attractive appearance which may be easily manipulated to afford access to the contents of the receptacle to which it is applied.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring to the drawing, a jar ll! of conventional construction adapted to contain one of the many creams or substances employed in the preparation of the toilet is provided with a bead H separating the main body of the jar from its upper portion l2 provided with external threads 13.

The cap is secured to the detachable ring [-4 by means of a pintle 25 which is a deformable resilient member, a solid rubber strip being shown as an example. The pintle or pivot member is preferably of a configuration corresponding to the configuration of the slots in the hinge members but is slightly larger than such slots, and when the parts are assembled, is compressed.

The ring member and the top or cap are assembled prior to their application to a jar. This can be easily accomplished by placing the cap in inverted position on a flat surface and stretching the distortable member edgewise through the slot in the hinge portion of the cap. Thereupon the ring is placed in its normal position over the hinge portion of the top and moved until the distortable member is seated in the enlarged sockets of the hinge portions of the ring.

When the members are assembled the openings of the slots in the cooperating hinge portions extend in the same direction and when the cap is closed the rubber member forming the pintle or pivot member of the hinge is twisted or distorted so that when the catch I9 is released the lid or cap will fly open to expose the contents of the jar or other container.

The latch I9 is fixed and consequently to unlatch the cover or top the hinge must Yield. Accordingly-forward pressure on the cap will allow it to become disengaged so that under the influence of the twisting pedal the cap will be swun upwardly to its open position.

Instead of a rubber pivot member a pivot member of other material as, for example a spring 26 may be employed. This spring should be preferably of a configuration non-circular as, for example generally rectangular in cross-section in order to prevent its rotation in the hinge members as shown with the mid-portion of the same slightly larger than its extremities 21 which latter are preferably of solid construction.

In lieu of rubber or spring any resilient material or materials having the same general characteristics may be employed for the pivot memher.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore'the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawing and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A cap for a. container having a fastening portion at its front, a supporting ring for said cap, cooperating interfitting slotted hinge portions on said cap and supporting ring, a, latch on' said sup porting ring in substantially diametrically opposed relation to said hinge portions and a recess in said cap engageable therewith when in closed position, and a. distortable pivot member connecting said hinge portions and being in its normal undistorted position when the front end of the cap is away from said latch so that when the cap is released ,from the latch it will move quickly from the latter; said hinge portions being constructed for relative movement so that a predetermined lateral movement of the cap relative to the 4 comprising a pair of spaced rearwardly disposed slotted members, a jar cap of a size to enclose the threaded portion of the jar and be held in position by said latch, said cap having a hinge portion adapted to fit between the spaced hinge portions of said mounting ring, said hinge portion having a forwardly opening slot, and a pintle comprising spring means extending through and engaging the slots in said hinged portions and normally maintaining said cap in an'elevatedposition and adapted to be distorted when the cap is closed, said hinge portions being constructed and arranged for relative movement so that a predetermined lateral movement of the cap relative to the mounting ring will release the cap to expose the interior of the jar.
