TROUSER HANGER Filed March 18, 1947 INVENTOR.
THnMAs. A. BELL 4 I I BY Patented Apr. 20, 1948 UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE- 'rnonsnn HANGER Thomas A. Bell, Ridgefield Park, N. J.
Application March 18, 1947, Serial No. 735,340
The present invention relates to garment supporters and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally the invention comprises agarment hanger of the type adapted to suspendtrousers in an inverted position and it includes a hook having a transversely extending triangular base formed of a continuation of the wire forming the hook. The lower side of the triangular portion has a series of grooves cut therein for the reception of the center portions of flat side members which are interiorly provided with a coating of masking tape for the more secure gripping of the cull portions of trousers, one of which side members being provided with a hinged clamping member at either end thereof adapted to clamp the other of said members when the trousers have been placed therebetween. Means in the form of a protuberance in the clamping member and an indentation in one of the side members is provided for the more secure gripping of the clamping members. The series of grooves in the triangular member provides means for adjustment of the side members whereby one or several pairs of trousers may be suspended by the hanger.
It is, accordingly, an object of the invention to provide a novel means of securing trousers in a garment hanger.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means whereby a pair of trouser gripping plates may be held in clamped relationship to a pair of trousers.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a latching means for a clamp for use in the device of the character described.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby one or a plurality of pairs of trousers may be suspended by a single garment hanger by means of a simple adjustment.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a. plan view of the device in opened position.
4 Claims. (01. 223- -96) Fig. 4 is an end View taken in the direction of the arrows 4-4 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of .an element of the invention.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
.Fig. 7 is a plan view of the device disclosed in Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view of one end of the device disclosed in Figs. 1-7, inclusive,'but showing a modification thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there isshown therein a garment hanger comprising a hook In for hanging the same along the conventional rod or the like of a clothes closet and an integrally formed dependent laterally extending triangular base ll having a series of grooves l2 formed in the bottom portion thereof.
A pair of longitudinally extending plates I3 and I4 are provided respectively with upwardly extending central portions [5 and I5 through which is slidably mounted the bottom side of the base H. The plates l3 and M are adapted to rest within the grooves l2. At the upper side of either end of the plate I3 is pivotally mounted by means of a rivet IT or the like, a clamp member l8 having integrally formed a longitudinally (when in operative position) extending arm l9 which is adapted to clamp against the outer side of the plate I4 and hold the same tightly upon the cuffs 20 of the trousers 2|. The inner faces of each of the plates l3 and M are provided with a coating of masking tape 22. The clamps l8 are preferably formed of spring metal and have a looped portion 23 interconnecting and formed integrally with the longitudinally extending arms l9.-
In the operation of the device, it will be seen that the cufls of a pair of trousers or of several .pairs of trousers may be placed between the plates l3 and I4 and that the masking tape 22 forming the inner surfaces of said plates will assist in preventing slippage of the trousers from the hanger. The portions l5 and lS-of the plates l3 and I4 may be selectively placed within the grooves l2 to accommodate one or more pairs of trousers. After the trousers have been so positioned between the plates, the clamps l8 are brought from the positions shown in Fig. 3 to the positions shown, for example in Figs. 1 and 2. The arms ill will engage the outer surface of the plate l4 and be spring pressed thereagainst by means of the looped portions 23 of the clamps to more securely hold the trousers within the hanger. The hanger may then be suspended by means of the hook ID in the conventional manner.
In the form of the invention disclosed in Fig. 8 wherein similar parts have been given similar reference characters, it will be seen that the arm 19 is provided with a protuberance 24 which is adapted to rest within the indentation 25 formed in the plate 14. By this construction it will be apparent that the arm I9 will be secured against accidental displacement from its clamped position upon the plate I4.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes andmodlifications coming within the scope of the inventionas defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described come prising a hook, an integrally formed transversely extending triangular member dependent there.- from and having a plurality of grooves formed in the lower end thereof, a pair of trouser'gripping members adapted to be selectively placed in said grooves and means for urging the trouser grippingmembers together.
, 2. A device of thecharacter described comprising a hook, an integrally formed tran$versely extending triangular member dependent therefrom and havinga plurality of grooves formed in i l e of a r of rou er ri p n mem sn e to. b e tiv l aced in sa d grqoveameans for urg n the trouser ripping members together, said means'comprising a clamp 4 revolubly mounted at either end of one of the trouser gripping members and each having an arm adapted to resiliently engage the other trouser gripping member.
3. A device of the character described comprising a pair of trouser gripping members, a hook and means formed integrally with the hook for selectively positioning and supporting the trouser gripping members, said means comprising an integrally formed transversely extending member having a plurality of grooves formed in its lower portion for the reception of the trouser supporting members.
4. A device of the character described comprising a hook, an integrally formed transversely extendingtriangular member dependent therefrom and having a plurality of grooves formed in REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
