(Cl. 223-95) The present invention relates to pants hangers, and more particularly to pants hangers of the type that support the pants freely by engaging in the cuff portion of the pants.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a structure of the class described which can be utilized as an attachment for a standard coat hanger or supported on a self-contained closet pole-engaging hook.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pants hanger of the class described which can be formed from a unitary sheet of material bent to form the pants-engaging elements.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pants hanger of the type described above which is formed from plastic, metal, or other inexpensive material so that the completed hanger can be retailed for a relatively low price.

A still further object of the invention is to construct a pants hanger according to the invention, which will provide a strong support for the pants which will not be readily broken, bent or otherwise made unserviceable in normal use.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention shown at tached to a conventional coat hanger;

Figure 3 illustrates the blank from which the device illustrated in Figure 1 is formed;

Figure 4 is a front elevation of a modified form of the invention illustrating an attached hook for supporting the pants hanger;

Figure 5 is a front elevation of a second modification of the invention showing an integral hook;

Figure 6 is a fragmentary front elevation of a third modification of the invention showing a removable hook;

Figure 7 is a fragmentary top plan view of the pants hanger illustrated in Figure 6;

Figure 8 is a side elevation of the hook illustrated in Figure 6;

Figure 9 is a transverse cross section taken on the line 99 of Figure 8, looking in the direction of the arrows, and

Figure 10 is a transverse cross section taken on the line 10-10 of Figure 8, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several figures, reference numeral 10 indicates the body portion of the invention which is formed as a generally arcuate sheet-like member having an upper edge 11 and a lower edge 12. A pair of legs 13 and 14 extend outwardly from the upper edge 11 of the body portion 10 from points adjacent the opposite end portions of the body portion 143. The legs 13 and 14 extend at a substantial diverging nited States Patent 0 2,7 92,978 Patented May 21, 1957 angle to each other and are provided with inwardly projecting feet 15 and 16, respectively.

A second pair of legs 17 and 18 extend from the lower edge 12 at points adjacent the outer end portions of the body portion 10. The legs 17 and 18 extend generally parallel to each other and are provided with opposed feet 19 and 20, respectively. The legs 13 and 14 are adapted to be folded along the top edge 11 of the body portion 10 to a point overlying the legs 17 and 18. The feet 19 and 20 are then folded on the fold lines 21 and 22, respectively, in a direction opposite to the legs 13 and 14 so that the feet 19 and 20 are positioned parallel to the legs 17 and 18, as illustrated in Figure 2. Feet 15 and 16 are then folded on the fold lines 23 and 24, respectively, so that the feet 15 and 16 are parallel to the legs 13 and 14, with the feet 15 and 16 opposite to the feet 19 and 20.

p In this form of the invention, the body portion 10 is positioned on one side of a conventional wire hanger 25 and the legs 13 and 14 are positioned on the other side of the wire coat hanger 25 so that the upper edge 11 between the body portion 10 and the legs 13 and 14 form hooks for supporting the pants hanger from the coat hanger 25.

In Figure 4 of the drawings, the body portion 10 is provided with a hook 26 having a shank 27 terminating in an eye 28 through which is passed a securing pin 29 which also engages through the body portion 10 to secure the hook 26 thereto. The device illustrated in Figure 4 is otherwise identical to the device illustrated in Figure 1.

In Figure 5, the body portion 10' is formed with an integral hook 30 extending from the upper edge 11 thereof. The hook 30 is provided with a shank portion 31 which is widened at the base to provide additional strength. The pants hanger illustrated in Figure 5 is otherwise identical to that illustrated in Figure 1.

Referring now to the medification illustrated in Figures 6 through 10, the body portion 10" is constructed identical to the body portion 10 in Figures 1 through 3 except that the central portion 32 is thickened and carries a vertical bore 33 extending therethrough. The bore 33 is slotted through one face of the body 10" as at 34 with the slot 34 extending from the top edge 11" to the bottom edge 12" thereof.

A hook 35 having a shank is positioned in the bore 33. An upper stop 37 is mounted on the shank 36 and engages against the top edge 11" of the body 10". A lower stop 38 is formed of thin material and extends radially from the shank 36 in one direction. The lower stop 38 is sufficiently thin to permit it to he slid downwardly through the slot 34 where a turn of the hook 35 in either direction will move the lower stop 38 under the body 10" where it will engage the lower edge 12" to secure the hook 35 to the body 10". The use of this form of the invention is identical to that of the modifications illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 with the added advantage of a removable hook 35.

In the use and operation of the invention, trousers are positioned with one leg on each side of the hanger and the inner portion of the trouser cuff is engaged over a pair of feet 15 and 16, while the opposite inner cuff of the other leg of the trousers is engaged over a pair of the feet 19 and 20. The body portion 10 is supported either by its own hook 26, 30, or by a clothes hanger 25 to support the trousers in a closet.

It can readily be seen that with this type of pants hanger no crushing, creasing or wrinkling action will take place due to the clamping of the cuffs together, and hence the trousers will stay in a fresh condition longer.

Having thus described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it should be understood that numerous modifications and structural adaptations may be resorted .pants engaging portions formed on their reverted end portions, a second pair of extensions extending in reverted relation from the opposite end-portions of said top edge of said body portion, said second pair of extensions being generally parallel to said first pair of extensions and being reverted a second time at a point opposite the reverted portion of said first pair of extensions to provide upstanding portions having pants engaging portions formed on their free end portions.

2. A-device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said second pair of extensions and said body portion form a clothes hanger engaging clamp therebetween to support said pants hanger on a clothes hanger.

3. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein a hook is formed on the top edge of said body portion midway be tween said extensions.

4. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein a hook is attached to said body portion adjacent the top edge thereof midway between said extensions.

5. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein said body portion is provided with a central vertical bore, a hook, a shank depending from said hook and integrally formed therewith and extending through said bore, an upper stop on said shank engaging the upper edge of said body portion, a lower stop laterally extending from said shank engaging under the lower edge of said body portion.

6. A device as claimed in claim 5 wherein said body portion is provided with a vertical slot extending from the upper to lower edge thereof and communicating with said bore, said shank being rotatably mounted in said bore whereby said lower stop is aligned with said slot to release said shank from said body portion.

7. A device as claimed in claim 5, wherein the portion of said body portion through which said bore extends is thicker than the remainingportions of said body portion.
