Application June 15, 1945, Serial No. 599,684
18 Claims. 1
This inventionvrelates to separable fastener stringers. More particularly, the invention deals with a novel end construction for the tapes of the stringers and the method of producing the same to provide a simple, strong, as well as neatly finished end on the stringer tapes and a method which will materially simplify the production of fastener tapes having the separator ends thereon in producing what is generally referred to as detachable fasteners where the two stringers are completely separated from each other as in jacket and similar installations of fasteners of this kind.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments oi the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. 1 is aside view of one end portion of a fastener showing the box part of a separator thereon.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the method of attaching industrial tape to stringer ends and in severing the tape to form the reinfgrced tape mountings on said stringer ends; an
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing only a part of the construction and illustrating a different arrangement of stringers in the attachment of industrial tape to the ends thereof.
In fasteners of the type and kind under consideration and, particularly, where what are known as separators are mounted on the stringer ends, such as pin and box parts employed to couple the stringer ends, dificulty has been experienced in forming a finished end on the stringer tape. One method of procedure has consisted of folding the tape end backwardly upon itself and then attaching the pin and box parts to the folded tape at the beaded edge,
To simplify this procedure, I employ a, simple method of securing what is commonly referred to as industrial tape, one type of which is generally known as Texcel, to a short-cut end of a stringer prior to the attachment of pin and box parts of a separator or any other end stop construction or coupling to the stringer. The industrial or finishing tape is preferably folded over the outer end of the stringer tape to form a neat and finished end on the stringer tape, as well as to seal the cut end against unravelling.
Industrial tapes of the type and kind under consideration can be made in colors similar to or in harmonywith the colors employed on the stringer tape, so that the characteristics of the industrial tape become substantially invisible aside from the difference in texture which may prevail in this tape as compared with the stringer tape. I
In Fig, 1 of the drawing, I have shown at It] the tape of one stringer of a pair of fastener stringers, on the beaded edge H of which are attached scoops l2, as in other devices of this kind. The scoops l2 terminate short of thetape ends as clearly seen in Fig. 1 for attachment of the tapes to garments to provide the mounting of end stops thereon or for attachment of the parts of what are known as separators, for example, the box part 63 shown attached to the beaded edge H beyond the scoops l2. Box and pin couplings are well known in the art and, for this reason, only one stringer is shown, namely the stringer to which the box part i3 is attached. It will be understood, however, that the companion stringer, to which the pin part is attached, will be constructed in the same manner, as more clearly hereinafter described.
Prior to attachment of the box part l3 to the stringer tape Hi or the beaded edge ii thereof, the protruding end portion M of the tape has a reinforcing and finishing strip or tape id attached thereto. The strip is in the form of a wide band folded centrally, as seen at 55, note Fig. 3, over the outer end of the tape it or the end portion il thereof and then extending onto and secured to opposite sides of the tape i in forming side portions ll and it, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The reinforcing strip sides I! and 88 extend over the bead H and around the outer surfaces of the bead, as seen at it) and 20. Furthermore, the strip sides l1 and 18 also extend slightly over the other edge 2|, as indicated at 22 and 23 in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The reinforcing and finishing strip I5 is generally known as industrial tape, one brand of which being identified as Texcel. However, any type and kind of tape of this kind can be used so long as it has properties to establish an adhesion to the stringer tape, at least sufliciently to maintain the assemblage and attachment to a support or until end stops or couplings, such as the coupling I3, has been attached thereto.
It is preferred that the type of adhesive emof a separator, which is the tape. In the present construction, it will also envelope the reinforcing tape which is disposed on the beaded edge II. In Figs. 1 and 2, the box part i3 is in the form of a die casting-which can be formed directly upon the beaded edge in the manner'clearly illustrated in section in Fig. 2.
In producing stringers of the type and kindunder consideration, I can follow one of two different procedures with respect to arrangement of stringers in attachment of the reinforcing strip or tape I thereto, i. e., with the stringer tapes arranged edge to edge with the scoops extending in common directions from adjacent tapes, as shown in Fig. 4, or with pairs of stringer tapes coupled together and outer edges of the tapes of adjacent pairs in abutting relation to each other, as illustrated in Fig. 5.
The method of procedure in attachment of the strip I5 will be the same in-Figs. 4 and 5. However, this method is diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 4. It comprises folding a relatively wide strip !5' from a roll 24 of industrial tape, as indicated at 25, to' extend over opposed side surfaces of a plurality of stringer tapes which, for illustrative purposes, are shown at illa, I01), I00 and ltd, one tape IDe being shown prior to insertion between the folds 25 of the strip IS.
The scoops of the stringer tapes Ina-Hie are all arranged at the right side of the tapes in bringing said tapes into close proximity to each other with the edges 2! spaced slightly from the beads H of adjacent tapes. The assemblages, as shown, are then passed between an opposed pair of rollers. one roller of the pair being shown at 25 in Fig. 4 of the drawing and these rollers firmly press the strip or the side portions thereof, upon opposed sides of the stringer tapes and around the beads H, producing on the resulting fastener the sides I! and I8. A large number of stringers may be united with the 2,4sac15 15" on the lines 29 :and 30"a-nd also necessitates a single cut 3| between outer edge portions 2! of adjacent pairs of stringers. The result, however, will produce finishing tapes l5, similar to those illustrated in Figs. 1-3 inclusive.
It will be understood that, in carrying out the method, the stringer tape ends are cut to apredetermined length beyond the end scoops-and these out ends are'arranged in alinement in the application of the finishing and reinforcing tape thereto. In referring to industrial tapes as illustrating one type and kind of tape that can be used, other tapes more commonly referred to as heat sealing tapes can, be used and one-of these tapes is identified as Bondex. Still further, what is known as pressure sealing tapes can also be used. i
In connection with the method shown in Fig. 5,
it will be apparent that, in some instances, and
with some types and kinds of stringers, the severing of the strip or tape 15" between the tapes of each pair, as at 29 and 30, need not be performed, particularly-when it is practical to use the finishing strip as a joining strip for the tape folded strip I5 and then, at a predetermined point or station spaced with respect to the rollers 26, the strip I5 is cut by a suitable cutter 21 at the sections 28 between the edges 2| and the beads ii and preferably centrally of these sections so as to leave the protruding ends, which result in extension of the tape sides I! and i8 around the bead, as seen at [9 and 20, and over the edge 2|, as seen at 22 or 23.
In the pressing operation, through the medium of the rollers 26 or immediately thereafter, heat may be applied particularly with some types and kinds of tapes. However, with other tapes, the need of heat is not essential. It will also be apparent that, in the assemblage of the stringer tapes, as shown in Fig. 4, the tape edges 2! will be disposed at one side of the scoops l2. However, beyond the end scoops, the ends !4 will be substantially in alinement with each other.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing, the method as disclosed in Fig. 4, is followed in substantially the same manner-with the exception that pairs of stringers, such for example, as the pair If, log and the pairs Illh and I02 are joined together by coupling of the scoops, prior to attachment of the strip l5" thereto. This construction'provides wider sections 28 between the stringers of=each pair which necessitates two cuttings of the strip ends as and when it would-be practical to do' this in making installations of the fasteners in Y predetermined uses. In this connection, it will be apparent that other means, in addition to the strip' l5, may be employed, for example such as an end stop construction or reinforcement die castor otherwise applied to the beaded edge portions or to the tape ends themselves.
Having fully described my invention, What I v claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
