The latch orv lock l is securedA in an aperture 2 of a closure 3. The' closure 3 may be a hinged door (not shown'l or it may be any closure or movablemeans that has relative movement transversely'of the latch bolt 9i The latch comprises a housing 4 having a transversev member 5 and a' closed end 6. The housing il` is provided with1 guides 'l and 8 projecting away from the member 5 in alignment with the remainder of the hous- S ing 4;
A sldable latch bolt 9 having ahead lprovidedy with a cam face Il projects laterally from the housing 4 defining aspace or portion to receive a compression spring l2` between thehead te and the housing` i to urge` saidI bolt 9l outwardly of the housing. The bolt 9" is provided with a stop pin I3` and a rack I4 withinv the-` housing. Themember 5 is provided with aV guide way I5 receiving a portion ofl the rack I4 to guide t-he'same and also `to maintain the rack in meshing operation with the pinion I 6.
The pinion I6 is provided with trunnions il andV I8 received in" bearingslof the housing Il;
The transverse memberv 5 is provided with guideways i9 and 20 rectangular in cross section` substantially midway thereof to guide other racks 2l and 22 which mess with thepinion I6. The member 5 is also provided with additional guides defining rectangular guide channels 2-3 and 24 in alignment withthe apertured guideways I9 and 2B. The guide channels 23 and 24 assist inV guiding the` racks 2l and 22 and also maintain the racks 2| and 22- inl proper mesh with the pinion I.
The rectangular apertures I9 and 20 also constitute lguide* means for the stems 2c and 25. O ne endA of each stem 24 and 25. is secured to the central' portion of a yoke bar 26 and 2l re'- spectively. Compression springs ZSand 29 surround the stems and are located between the transverse member 5 and the yoke bars 26 and 2l'. These springsreturn the manually operated means to normal. position. The' yoke bars 26' and.. 2l are providedi with end portions Sil, 3|, 32and 33 partly located in guideways 'l and 8 of the housing 4. Each pair of end portionsv supports a finger bar or physical contact piece` 34, and 35 respectively. Each contact piece is secured to its supportingv end portions by lag bolts 3B'.
In order to lock the bolt 9 against retraction a locking or blocking means 3l' is movable into a path of or below one of the racks as 2|. This operation prevents the operation of the pinion I6 and in turn prevents the operation of the bolt 9.
The embodiment illustrated consists of a sliding block 31 guided in along the end wall or closed end 6 and further guided by the rectangular block or cleat 38. One wall of the housing 4 and one finishing plate 40 is slotted as at 31' to receive an operating button 39 detachably secured to the sliding block 31.
The ,finishing plates 40 and 4I are provided with finger recesses 42 and 43 to receive the users nger tips to operate one of the nger bars.
In order to assemble the finish plates 40 and 4I the bars 34 and 35 should be removed so that the recessed edges (not shown) of the plates 40 and 4| will take over the end portions 30, 3|, 32 and 33 of the yoke. When the plates are in place they are secured to the latch or lock housing by lag bolts 44 and 45 and, at least, the corners of the finishing plates are secured to the closure by suitable fastening means such as screws, bolts, rivets, etc., as indicated at 46 of Figure 2. When the finishing plates are in place the finger bars may be replaced and fastened.
It will be seen that the operating means for the lock or latch are always located within the external contour of the same. It is deemed to be of great importance that there are no projections extending outwardly from the faces of the lock.
It is noted that the operating button 39 could be set in a recess (not shown) and it would be of value especially in packaging and transportation.
If my latch construction is used on a closure having a normal approach from one side only, then only one operating pusher will be needed, furthermore, the locking or blocking feature will not be needed, and likewise only one recessed finishing plate will be needed.
In order to make the bolt 9 reversible it should be provided with rack teeth on opposite sides (not shown).
The bolt head 1'0 is guided in a rectangular tube 4B having an apertured ange or iianges 41 whereby it may be secured or fastened to a closure 2 as Clearly shown in Figure 4. In order to remove the stop pin from the bolt 9 the housing 4 may be provided with apertures (not shown) in alignment with the stop pin I3.
The modied construction disclosed in Figure 8 contemplates the use of a spring like spring I2 of Figures 1 and 4. This latch bolt 9 having the rack bar I4 is provided with a bolt head having two beveled or cam faces Il' and l2 instead of one cam face as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
This spring actuated bolt 9' is for use on a swinging door in which the door swings freely in both directions through the door frame. This bolt is used in combination with a two-way keeper (not shown). When the door providedwith this latch is closed the two-way latch bolt 9 yieldably retains the door in closed position by cooperating with the two-way keeper.
The rack bar I4 is provided with a transverse aperture I3 to receive a stop pin (not shown).
Having fully shown and described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A latch construction for closures, comprising a housing, said housing being substantially rectangular in section both longitudinally and transversely, said housing having a closed end portion and an opposite open end portion and a transverse member parallel with the closed end portion, located intermediate said end portions, a slidable latch bolt mounted in said housing, said transverse member having a longitudinal guideway slidably receiving a portion of said bolt, a rotary pinion journaled in said housing between said transverse member and said closed end portion, said bolt having a rack portion in mesh with said pinion, said bolt having a head located outside of said housing and in spaced relation therefrom, a compression spring on said bolt and located between said head and said housing, said housing having guide ways extending from said transverse member to the open end portion thereof, said transverse member having apertures constituting guideways rectangular in cross section, rack bars located respectively in said apertures for reciprocation therein, said rack bars being in mesh with said pinion, yokes having stems, said stems extending respectively into said apertures and adapted to engage the ends of the rack bars to operate the same, the ends of said yokes being slidably fitted in the guideways of the housing, compression springs on the stems and located respectively between the transverse member and the yokes, said transverse member having channel guides in alignment with the apertures, said guides engaging respectively said rack bars, finishing plates having recesses to receive portions of said yokes.
2. A latch construction for closures comprising a housing having a structure therein extending transversely thereof and intermediate the ends of the same, a slidable latch bolt mounted in the housing, said transversely extending structure having a portion for guiding said latch bolt thereover, a rotary pinion journaled in the housing, said bolt having a rack portion in mesh with said pinion and a, head located exteriorly of the housing, a spring extending between the housing and the bolt adapted to urge the bolt into a door REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the le of this patent:
