NAME SELECTOR Filed Dec. 19. 1944 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor JENRIEJ'M POJA mil/7145M? Patented Aug. 5, 1947 NAME SELECTOR Henrietta Rosa Montague, Hays, Kans.
Application December 19, 1944, Serial No. 568,927
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a device by the use of which a suitable name or names may be quickly found.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for selecting a euphonizing combination of pleasing and substantial sounding names.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby independent columns of names may be quickly adjusted to bring a certain combination of names in different columns into alignment to test the euphony of the combination so selected.
Other features andadvantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my name selecting device,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of a journal construction, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a ribbon operating roller.
Having experienced the difiiculty of selecting a couplet or set of harmonizing names for boy and girl babies, and having noted the same difiiculties of other parents, and the time uselessly expended in trying to choose such names; and names which euphonize With a family name or names, I have invented the herein described device for overcoming such perplexing experiences.
Furthermore, my device will become very useful to authors, playwriters, etc. in saving much time in selecting suitable names for their works, and I have heard authors, movie and other actors often spend much time and labor in trying to select a euphonious nom-de-plume for a pen or stage name, and my device should prove very useful in such cases.
Referring now to the drawings illustrating my invention and the following specification thereof in which like reference characters indicate like parts, ID indicates my name selector in its entirety, and in detail II indicates a base upon which is provided two spaced apart forward and rear sets of bearings l2 and I3, and I4 and I5, respectively. In each of these sets of bearings are mounted twin spindles l6 and I1, l8 and IS, the inner portions 20 and 2| of the latter pair of spindles are enlarged and provided with feathered or annularly spaced apart keys 22 and 23,
and on the inner ends are provided disk heads 24 and 25, adapted to be seated in the grooves 26 and 21 formed adjacent to th ends of a floating coupling 28, and in which the members 24 and 25 are rotatable and slidable. Fixedly keyed upon the members 20 and 2|, are internally grooved hollow rollers 29 and 30, and 3| and 32, each having a slot 33, to receive the terminal tongues 34 and 35, of ribbons 36 and 31, one operating upon each set of rollers 29 and 3|, and 30 and 32, the purpos of which ribbons will presently be explained. The stubs l6 and I1, and I8 and I9, respectively project through the bores 38 in said bearings l2, to 14, respectively and the outer ends of the stubs are screw threaded as at 39, All, 4! and 42, to receive the knurled knobs 43, 44 and 45 and 43, through means of which the several rollers may be turned to move said ribbons 36 and 3'! forward or rearward as desired. The ribbons 36 and 31, have printed thereon longitudinal columns 41 and 48 of names each one of which constitutes one horizontal line in each column.
The members l2, [3, Hand [5 are each provided with notched recesses 49, 50, 5| and 52, the notches 49 and 50 aligning with one another and the notches '5] and 52, similarly aligning; the purpose of these notches is to support a liner 53, or the edge 54, of a magnifying glass 55.
The coupling 28 is of two semi-cylindrical sections, hinged together at 56 and the sections locked together at 51. It may be stated here that all of the elements of the invention except the ribbons 36 and 31, may be made of wood, metal or plastic material.
The base II at its rear end 58 is provided with a centrally disposed slot 59, to receive a card 50, bearing the surname of the person seeking suitable Christian or given names to go therewith, whereby a a euphonious full name may b had.
In operating, the liner 53, is seated in the notches 49 or 5B, or 5i and 52, as the condition of the rolls of ribbons require. When a first name from column 41 is selected any near or exposed name is aligned with said liner and a rubber or other wedge 61, is forced between one of the bearings l3 or i5 and its adjacent roller to hold the ribbon 36, stationary while the names on the ribbon 31, are gradually brought into horizontal alignment with the selected name, then by comparing the aligning names when found suitable otherwise, with the surname it can readily be seen whether or not there is desired euphony in the set of names so far selected. This operation can be repeated until a final selection is made.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
A suitably slotted cover may be provided for the device if desired.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrange ment of details and parts such as come within the purview of the inventionblaimed may be resorted to, in/factual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new is:
1. The described device comprising a horizontal base, a coacting pair of bearings adjacent the rear end thereof, a pair of spaced apart aligning spindles, the outer end of each being supported in said respective bearings, a floating bearing connecting and supporting the inner ends of said spindles, a roller fixedly mounted oneach of said spindles, another like set of bearings, spindles and rollers adjacent the forward end of the :base, a ribbon connecting and operating upon the two rollers on one side of the base and a like ribbon connecting and operating upon the two rollers on the other side of the base both of the ribbons being exposed from roller to roller, both exposed ribbons being on a horizontal plane and movable horizontally and independently, and a device for aligning words formed in columns on each ribbon.
2. The described device comprising a horizontal base, a coacting pair of bearings adjacent the both exposed ribbons being on a horizontal plane and movable horizontal and independently.
