Be it known that I, SIMPSON S. BRYAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented an Improved Bookkeepers Stool, of which the following is a spdcification.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved stool particularly adapted for bookkeepers use to permit the occupant to readily assume a position in front of any one of a number of lodgers or like books lying open on a long desk without having to get oif his seat and without having to step from one book to another. Bookkeepers and other clerks who have to keep account or record books have to be constantly referring to and making entries in different books lying open on the desk before them, and they have to step from one book to another, and thus are kept standing on their feet all day, or if they are seated on a stool have to be constantly getting 0% the stool to move over from one book to another, or, on the other hand, have to pull the books about. This last method is hard on the books as well as on the clerk. To ameliorate these conditions, it has been proposed to provide a seat mounted on a track running parallel with the front of the desk. Such a construction is, however, cumbersome, because the tracks take up too much space and the construction is more or less expensive and also requires no little amount of energy to move the stool about.

I provide a stool which contains within itself means whereby the occupant can readily assume a position in front of any one of a number of books on the desk and which is, furthermore, Very easy of operation. The desired objects I have accomplished by constructing my stool with transverse rockers to allow the stool to be rocked in a plane at right angles to its front-that is, in a plane parallel with the front of the desk at which the stool is to be used. To get the desired movement from one book to another by the rocking of the seat, the stool must be a high stool-that is, one not less than thirty-two inches in height.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved stool in position in front of a desk, and Fig. 2 is a face view, and Fig. 3 is a side view, of a modified form of my stool provided with a back.

The seat and frame or legs of the stool may be of any form suitable for-the purpose. In Fig. 1 I have shown the seat A as fixedly mounted upon the legs D and formed with a hollow curve, while in Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown the seat A as upholstered and as provided with a back B. The essential feature of my invention, however, is in the mounting of the frame or legs D of the stool upon a pair of transverse rockers R R parallel with the front edge a of the stool. I prefer to form each of the transverse rockers R with a slight reverse curve r at the ends to prevent overturning.

In Fig. 1, D represents the desk, having upon it three open ledgers or other books L L L Should the occupant of the stool be using the middle book L the rocking stool will occupy its normal central position (indicated in the drawing) in front of that ledger. Should he need to use the right-hand ledger L he will tip the stool over toward the right, while a like movement to the left will bring him in a position in front of the left-hand book, as will be readily undersood.

I claim as my invention- A high stool for bookkeepers use, consisting of a seat, legs on which said seat is fixedly mounted and transverse rockers parallel to the front edge of the seat, on which said legs are mounted whereby, when the stool is rocked sidewise in front of a desk, the occupant of the stool can rock himself into position in front of any one of a number of books on the desk, substantially as described.
