P I C TURE FRAME Filed Aug. 25, 1944 l INVENTO. I @Wwf BMK l. 141 A Patented Apr. 15, 1947 nUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE to Springield Photo Mount Co.,` Holyoke, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts f Application August 23, 19414,` Serial No. 550,762
This invention relates to improvements in picture frames.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a picture frame which is characterized by a novel construction and arrangement to facilitate the ready and easy insertion into and withdrawal from of a picture.
For purposes of disclosure the novel feature of the invention will be described in connection with a picture frame having spaces for two pictures but it 'will be understood that the invention is adapted for frames for one or any number of pictures.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of al picture frame embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevational view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a partial view similar to that of Fig. 2 to explain certain features of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the picture frame shown in Fig. 1; and y Fig. 5 iS a perspective View of the insert of the picture frame of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail Ythe invention wm be more fully described.
Panels are represented by 2 which are preferh ably alike in construction and while the invention will be described in connection with a pair of panels it will be understood that one or as many panels as desired may be used.
A panel preferably includes a body d of one or more plies of material which may be cardboard or the like. The panel is covered by a suitable ornamental material 5 which may include leather, paper or the like.
Where a pair of panels are provided they are hinged together at IE] as shown Iso that they may be swung into face to face closed relation.
A recess I2 is provided in the inner face of the body and may be formed by a depression or by a cut-out in an innermost layer of the said body.
The recess is adaptedto receive a pane i4 of transparent material and a picture, which is not shown.
The covering material is eut out to expose the pane and provide a rim I6 extending inwardly around the recess and edges of the pane to hold the pane in the recess. y y
A 'slot I8 is provided in the covering material at a point above the recess through which a picture may be inserted into the recess behind the pane and through which a picture may be withdrawn.
An insert such as 28 in Fig. 5 is provided which which is disposed behind the pane. It has score 1 Claim. (Cl. li0--152) i lines 22 and is made from'paper or cardboard or the like so that a portion 24 thereof may be disposed against the upper side of the recess in the body and a portion 26 may lie on the face of the body `beneath the rim l li. A tab 28 extends from the portion 2B through the slot I8 which is adapted for manual engagement.
Adjacent the upper side of the recess the body is scored at 30 for the purpose to be described.
The operation of the device with insert in place is as follows:
The tab '23 is engaged and the insert is pulled part way out through the slot I8 so that it overlies the upper edge of the recess in the body. Then the pane is slid upwardly on the insert so that the upper portion extends through the slot.
A picture is slid in between the pane and insert into the recess to lie beneath the pane which is slid downwardly so as to lie over the picture in the recess. The insert may then be withdrawn. Or the insert may be withdrawn before the picture is inserted beneath the pane.
Subsequently, when it is desired to Withdraw the picture and to insert a new one pressure is applied to the rear face of the body below the score; The score line allows the body below the upper edge of the recess to be displaced forwardly somewhat as shown in Fig. 3. In this position the upper edge of the pane is located away from the bottom of the recess so that it slides upwardly past the upper edge of the recess and through slot I8. Or a picture may be withdrawn from beneath the pane and through said slot I8.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms Without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A picture frame comprising in combination, a body provided in the forward face thereof with a Y sunken yrecess having perpendicular side walls providing rim portions overlying adjacent marginal edge portions of said pane, said covering having a slot therethrough parallel to and spaced outwardly from one side wall of said recess, an insert of flexible material in said recess having a main body portion below said pane and being scored to provide one portion at right angles to the plane of the body portion and disposed between said onewall of said recess and an adjacent edge of said pane and another portion in a plane parallel to that of the body portion and disposed between the forward face of the body and adjacent rim portion of the covering and extending to- Wards said slot and terminating in a tab extending through said slot, and' said body provided with a score line the recess thereof adjacent said one wall, al1 adapted and arranged whereby a portion of the body in said recess adjacent said one wall may be displaced forwardly from the normal plane thereof by pressure applied to the rear'face of the bodysothat said pane. is moved REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the le of this patent:
