Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ANTHONY HESSELS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EAR-RING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 240,591, dated April 26, 1881, Application filed December 1, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY HESSELS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Bin gs, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in diamond ear rings or drops, by which the same can be more conveniently attached to or removed from the ear; and the invention consists of a curved or angular bracket-arm, from which the settingis suspended, and of a spring puncture-hook, which is swiveled to the upper end of the bracket-arm and connected to the lowerend of the same, when the puncture-hook is passed through the lobe of the car, by a catch-hook or other retaining device.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved ear-ring, showing the puncture-hook thrown forward into position in which it is to .be applied to the ear; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, shown as attached to the ear.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the setting of my ear ring or drop, which is hung by a fixed ring or eye, a, to a fixed ring, I), of the forward end of a curved or angular bracketarm, B, that extends from a point above the setting down to apoint back of the same. The bracket-arm B is provided at its upper front end with an ornamental rosette, d, and at its lower end with a catch-hook, e.
To the upper end of the bracket-arm B, preferably in front of the connection between the same and the setting, is swiveled the nearlyvertical end of the spring puncture-hook (l, the lower free end of which may be sprung into the catch 6. 7
By releasing the spring puncture-hook C from the catch it may be swung around the setting until it arrives at aposition in front of and in line withthe bracket-arm B, as shown in Fig. 1, in whichposition the puncture-hook is readily and conveniently passed through the lobe of the car, after which the bracketarm and setting is turned back through an angle of one hundred and twenty degrees, and the lower spring end of the puncture-hook then sprung into the catch at the lower end of the bracket-arm.
In removing the ear-ring the same operation, but in a reverse order, is accomplished,
and in this manner the ear-ring put on or rearm, from which the setting is suspended, of a springpuncture-hook, the upper endof which is swiveled to the upper part of the bracketarm, while the lower end is adapted to be sprung into a retaining device at the lower end of the bracket-arm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In ear-rings, the combination of a curved or angular bracket-arm, from which the setting is suspended, with aspringpuncture-hook, which is vertically swiveled by its upper end to the bracket-arm, and adapted to be swung into a position either in front or back of the setting, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two Witnesses, this 27th day of November, 1880.
ANTHONY HESSELS. Witnesses:
