EAR-RING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,935, dated January 25, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARMAND CLAUDE, of San Francisco, in the State of California, have invented an Improvement in Ear-Ring or Ear- Ornament Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.

Ear-rings usually hang below the tip of the ear; but in some instances the ornament has been connected to the upper portion of the ear, but it is liableto slip 01f, or it may easily become detached accidentally, or be pulled ofi' by a thief.

The object of this invention is to support the ear-ring or ear-ornament above the tip of the ear in a very firm and reliable manner; and for this purpose two fastenings are made use of, the first being a wire that passes through the usual hole in the tip of the ear and forms as strong a fastening as usual; the second is a clipthat catches firmly upon the upper part of the ear and holds the ornament in the desired position upon the ear itself. This clip is peculiarly constructed, as hereinafter described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the ear-ring or ear-ornament complete, showing the position of the ear in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the fastening and part of the ear in section.

The ear ring or ornament a may be of any desired character. To the back thereof is attached the wire b, thatis adapted to go through the hole stead of an upward direction, this loop-wire b will suspend the same in the ordinary manner.

The ornament is intended to extend upwardly at the outside of the ear, and itis provided with a second fastening or clip to catch the edge of the ear, said clip being formed of a spring wire or catch, 0, that passes behind the back of the ear, and more or less over the ear, and the projection i, that enters the groove or channel in the car, near the edge thereof, so that this projection prevents the ear-ringturning outwardly and slipping off the ear. These two characters of fastenings insure the firm holding of the ear ring or ornament in its place upon the ear, and allow of the easy removal of the same by springing the wire or ,catch 0 from behind the ear, and afterward unhooking the wire b from the hole in the ear.

The ear-ring may have a drop or ornament hanging below the car, as well as the ornament that extends above the ear-ti p.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the ear-ring ornament, of the wire I), to pass into the hole in the ear, and the clip that catches upon the upper part of the ear, substantially as set forth.

2. The ear-ring-ornament catch formed of the projection a; that enters the groove or channel near the edge of ear, and the spring or catch 6 that passes at the back of the ear, substantially as set forth.
