E. GOTTLIEB v 2,403,216 REMQYER FOR SWEEP WHEELS O R THE LIKE FOR REPAIRING WATCHES F led Dec. 15; 1943 j 1 WWW Patented July 2, 1946 UNITED STATES; PATENT OFFICE REMOVER FOR SWEEP WHEELS OR THE LIKE FOR REPAIRING WATCHES Elias Gottlieb, New York, NY.
Application December 13, 1943, Serial No. 514,086
1 Claim. 1
My invention relates to improvements in. tools and, more specifically, to an improvement in watchmakers tools, and while applicable to various instruments, such, for instance, as chronographs and the like, yet I have designed it more particularly for use in connection with watches having a sweep second wheel or any similar wheels held or carried on pinions by friction, the use of like tools being well understood by those skilled in the art.
If a sweep wheel is removed by ordinary watchmakers tools the rim of the wheel is frequently bent and thus the substitution of a new sweep wheel is necessary. Moreover, the watch plate is usually marred, which is also highly objec tionable.
It is, therefore, the main object of the present invention to facilitate the removal of sweep wheels or the like from the third wheel pinion without the danger of breaking or bending said pinion or the rim of the sweep Wheel and without damaging other parts of the watch; another object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character which shall be simple in construction, of but few parts easily and readily assembled, and therefore economical to manufacture, and which shall be effective for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Further objects of the instant invention reside in any novel feature of construction or operation or novel combination of parts present in the embodiment of the invention described and shown in the accompanying drawing whether within or without the scope of the appended claim and irrespective of other specific statements as to the scope of the invention contained herein.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the same;
Figure 4 is another side elevation showing the device when holding a sweep wheel and being 4 drawn in an enlarged scale; and
Figure 5 is a front elevation of the device holding a sweep wheel and being also drawn in an enlarged scale.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the device consists of two flat tweezers legs or spring jaw members 3 and 4 and of a body or central part I, which is formed by the joined upper ends of the members 3 and 4. Whereas the upper ends of the members 3 and 4 can be fastened together by means of a pivot (not shown) similar as the legs of a pair of compasses, or by riveting, or the like, I prefer to fasten them toing their points into convenient shape for handling small and delicate objects.
The lower end of the tweezers leg or spring jaw member 3 is reduced in size and provides a shoulder 3a at the juncture of the reduced portion with the wider and thicker upper portion,
this shoulder serving as a limit stop to abut against the sweep wheel. The reduced end portion is formed as an inwardly bent, pointed claw I 5 adapted to be inserted under the center portion of a sweep wheel 1 or the like so that claw 5 engages the wheel between two spokes; whereas the lower end of member 4 is likewise reduced in size to provide a shoulder 411 at the juncture of the reduced portion with the wider and thicker portion to cooperate with the shoulder 3a.. The reduced end portion is formed as an inwardly bent fork 6 having pointed prongs adapted to be also inserted under the center portion" of a. wheel 1 in such a manner that a spoke of said wheel is located between said prongs. This Way of engaging the center portion of a wheel I, as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, allows a safe manipulation of the wheel and. makes it unnecessary to engage or even to touch the rim of wheel 'I.'
As soon as the parts 5 and 6 have (clasped the center portion of wheel 1 between the spokes in the manner previously referred to, the wheel 1 can be removed from the watch by applying pressure on the members 3 and 4 so that the wedgeshaped prongs will force the sweep wheel upwards off the pinion.
While there has been shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to a single modification, it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
3 7 It is the intention, therefore, to be limited only as indicated by the scope of the following claim. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
A tool consisting of the combination, in one implement, of tweezers having two spring jaw members which are fastened together at their upper ends and the lower end of one spring jaw member having a, reduced portion forming an inwardly bent pointed serted under the center claw adapted to be in-] portion of a wheel be-' "tween two spokes whereas the lower end of the r other spring jaw member has a'reduced portion v and forms an inwardly bent fork having pointed prongs adapted to be inserted under the center portion of a wheel in such a manner that a spoke of said wheel is situated between said prongs,
and a central part consisting of the joined upper ends of said spring jaw members, a shoulder being provided at the inner side of each of said spring jaw members, one of said shoulders being located at the juncture between the pointed claw and its adjoining enlarged spring jaw member portion, and the other at the bottom of the slots between the claws of stantially asset forth.
